“Actually, you are a talented and competent young man. But I’m sorry to tell you, John. You don’t pass the interview. Taking your degree and working experience into account, you are not adequate for this job.” The interviewer said. Hearing these words, the tall, well-groomed man sank even deeper into his chair and stared blankly at a spot on the wall ahead of him. Nobody knew how disappointed he was! After a while, when he calmed down gradually, he straightened up his back quickly and made his black suit unfolded. “I am the best! I did a good job just now!” He told himself.

On his way home, the sky was full of black clouds. Soon it began to rain heavily, so he had to rush home in the rain. As John got home, pulling out his keys and opened the door, he found a man crouching(蹲下) in the corner of the yard. He came closer and looked at the man carefully. The man was an old man with wrinkled face and a sad expression. He wore a brown coat which was ragged and full of holes and his shoes were torn. With one hand he leant on a rough stick, while with the other he held out his battered hat for money. John thought him as a beggar in the beginning. Later, the old man rolled painfully as John approached.

“What's wrong with you?” John inquired.

“Nothing, some naughty guys teased and hit me just now.” The old man looked at John and reached out his hands, “could you do me a favor?” John helped the old man up, and asked, “where do you live?”

“Er...”he hesitated, “I have no home, no friends and no relatives.”

“I am sorry to hear that, but how about living with me if you don't mind my simple house?” John tried to invite the old man to live with him.

“Thank you. It’s very kind of you. I hope God bless you.” The old man smiled and h id John’s wallet in his sleeves quickly.

Frank was anxious get hand and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night. When he reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However the sound continued, and Frank began walking more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this. The short, quick steps grew louder until they seemed very near. Frank found it impossible not to turn round. As he did so, he caught sight of a human form coming toward him. After reaching the other side of the bridge, Frank stopped and pretended to look down at the water. From the corner of his eyes he could now make out the form of a man dressed in a large overcoat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen. As the man came near, Frank turned towards him and said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way. Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour. He knew that the person who lived there was very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, Frank began following the stranger quietly. The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on, and the man waited until it went out. When about half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop onto the ground at the other side. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右; 2. 应使用5个以上短文中标有下划线的关键词语; 3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好; 4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。 Paragraph 1: Now Frank knew what the man wanted to do. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 1: Frank couldn’t just stand in the dark and wait. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 答案及解析: Like every other Sunday morning, my best friend, Patty, dropped my godchildren, Jeremiah and Rachel, off at my apartment around 6:30 a.m. before she went on her way to work. And, just like every other Sunday morning, we all went back to sleep for a couple of hours. When everyone awoke I made a quick breakfast and then the four of us, my husband, Larry, the kids and myself, hurried and got ourselves out the door for church, just like every other Sunday morning. It wasn’t until we walked through the church doors and I saw the girl standing there passing out flowers that I remembered this wasn’t like every other Sunday morning,it was Mother’s Day. Before I could stop him, Jeremiah, always the curious child, went up to the girl and tugged on her arm. “Linda, what are you doing?” He asked. Linda smiled at him and said brightly “I’m giving a flower to every mother in church today because it’s Mother’s day.” Jeremiah’s eyes grew bright. “My mom had to work today. Can I have a flower to take home to give her?” I was so proud of him at that moment. However, what she didn’t know was that finding parts or repairmen for Volvos isn't always easy. When the twenty-five-year-old V olvo started to cut out when Amanda was driving, even without knowing anything about the car, she knew it was a pretty big problem. But it started up again right away, so she ignored it. However, she might not have made the best choice. And then one day, it wouldn’t’ t start. Amanda had it towed (to) to a garage that specializes in Volvos, and they got it up and running- for a week or so. Still paying off the first bill, she thought she'd ask a neighbor who fixes cars out of his garage to give it a try. He's a Chevy repairman, but a cars a car, right? Amanda soon found out that. in fact. Volvos are V olvos and Chevys are Chevys- and never shall the two meet! Given that Amanda lived on an island. she was completely stuck at home without a car. She had no money to take taxis everywhere, and she certainly didn't have the money to buy another car. So Amanda finally did what any other fiercely independent- or desperate- woman would do:She ordered a Volvo manual(说明书) and started learning. You should know that Amanda’s father never fixed cars in his spare time when she was growing up, so she knew nothing about cars. After reading through the manual she just flipped through (快速翻阅) and looked at the pictures, but it was a start, right?- she searched online. There are Volvo-fixing websites, V olvo boards, and V olvo groups. Who knew? She posted questions, always apologizing for her complete ignorance, and got answers, which just led to more questions. But she made a little progress by checking the gas tank and replacing the cheap gas with the high-grade one Paragraph 1: The more she learned, the more confident she grew. _______________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 She knew she was not giving up repairing the car, no matter how depressed she felt at times. _______________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________ 参考答案:

As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank, he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked, “It looks like you have got a problem,” Arthur said. “I am afraid so. I am in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.” “Is there something I can do to help?”Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said, “Thanks. If you are sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these two suitcases into a taxi.” “No trouble at all, I’d be glad to help.” The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground, he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking he heard the long loud noise of an alarm. It was from the bank. There had been a robbery. Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other, “What happened?” But everyone had a different answer. Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him. She looked at the suitcase and then at him.

A Vacation with My Mother I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother―loving, sweet, and yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
