What is it about Americans and food? We love to eat ,but we feel 1 about it afterward. We say we want o nly the best, but we strangely enjoy junkfood. We’re 2 with health and weight loss but face an unprec edented epidemic of obesity(肥

The immigrant experience, too, has been one of inha rmony. Do as Romans do meanseating what “real Amer icans” eat, but our nation’s food has come to be 5 by imports—pizza, say, or hot dogs. And some of t

he country’s most treasured cooking comes from peo ple whoarrived here in shackles.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise then that foo d has been a medium for the nation’sdefining strug gles, whether at the Boston Tea Party or the sit?in s at southern lunch counters. It is integral to our concepts of health and even morality whether one re frains from alcohol forreligious reasons or evades meat for political 6

But strong opinions have not brought 7 . Americans are ambivalent about what they putin their mouths. We have become 8 of our foods, especially as we lea rn more about what theycontain.

The 9 in food is still prosperous in the American c onsciousness. It’s no coincidence, then, that the f irst Thanksgiving holds the American imagination in such bondage(束

A. answer I. creative

B. result J. belief

C. share K. suspicious

D. guilty L. certainty

E. constant M. obsessed

F. defined N. identify

G. vanish O. ideals

H. adapted

2.M be obsessed with 为固定搭配,原意为“被……

8. K系动词become后应填入一个形容词,和后面介词of形成短语be/become suspicious o f“对……

(have)belief in sth.“ 相信……”。

Now let us look at how we read. When we read a prin tedtext, our eyes move across a page in short, jerk y movement. We recognize words usually whenour eyes are still when they fixate. Each time they fixate,

we see a group of words. This isknown as the recog nition span or the visual span. The length of time ofr which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixa tion ----varies considerably from person to person. It also vaies withinany one person according to hi s purpose in reading and his familiarity with the t ext.Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness.

Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvemen t courses have concentrated toomuch on how our eyes move across the printed page. As a result of this misleading emphasison the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to tr ain theeyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed onto a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a sec ond. One of the exercises has requiredstudents to f ix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side. Such wordpatterns are often c onstructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes inmore and more words at each suc

cessive fixation. All these exercises are very clev er, but it’sone thing to improve a person’s abili ty to see words and quite another thing to improve hisability to read a text efficiently. Reading requ ires the ability to understand the relationshipbetw een words. Consequently, for these reasons, many ex perts have now begun to questionthe usefulness of e ye training, especially since any approach which

trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him inreading a continu ous text.

1. The time of the recognition span can be affected by the following facts except________ .

A. one’s familiarity with the text

B. one’s purpose in reading

C. the length of a group of words

2. The author may believe that reading ______.

A. requires a reader to take in more words at each fixation

B. requires a reader to see words more quickly

C. demands an deeply-participating mind

D. demands more mind than eyes

3 What does the author mean by saying “but it’s o ne thing to improve a person’s ability tosee words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently.” in thesecond parapraph?

A. The ability to see words is not needed when an e fficient reading is conducted.

B. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to i mprove both the ability to see and tocomprehend wor ds.

C. The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to i mprove an efficient reading.

D. The reading exercises mentioned has done a great job to improve one’s ability to seewords.

4. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. The visual span is a word or a group of words we see each time.

B. Many experts began to question the efficiency of eye training.

C. The emphasis on the purely visual aspects is mis leading.

D.The eye training will help readers in reading a c ontinuous text.

Just seven years ago, the Jarvik-7 artificial heart was being cheered as the model of human creativeness. The sight of Barney Clark-alive and conscious after trading his diseased heart for a metal-and-plastic pump-convinced the press, the public and the future had arrived. It hadn't. After monitoring production of the Jarvik-7, and reviewing its effects on the 150 or so patients (most of whom got the device as a temporary measure) the U.S Food and Drug Administration concluded that the machine was doing more to endanger lives than to save them. Last week the agency cancelled its earlier approval, effectively banning the device. The recall may hurt Symbion Inc, maker of the Jarvik-7, but it wont end the request for an artificial heart. One problem with the banned model is that the tubes connecting it to an external power source created a passage for infection. Inventors are now working on new devices that would be fully placed, along with a tiny power pack, in the patient's chest. The first samply products aren't expected for another 10 or 20 years. But some people are already worrying that they'll work-and that America's overextended health-care programs will lose a precious $2.5 billion to $5 billion a year providing them for a relatively few dying patients. If such expenditures cut into funding for more basic care, the net effect could actually be a decline in the nation's health. 16. It can have a bad effect on both the bright and the not-so-bright child. After all, it can be quite discouraging to be at the bottom of the top grade! Besides, it is rather unreal to grade people just according to their intellectual ability. This is only one aspect of their total personality. We are concerned to develop the abilities of all our pupils to the full, not just their academic ability. We also value personal qualities and social skills, and we find that mixed-ability teaching contributes to all these aspects of learning. In our classrooms, we work in various ways. The pupils often work in groups: this gives them the opportunity to learn to co-operate, to share, and to develop leadership skills. They also learn how to cope with personal problems as well as learning how to think, to make decisions, to analyse and evaluate, and to communicate effectively. The pupils learn from each other as well as from the teacher. Sometimes the pupils work in pairs; sometimes they work on individual tasks and assignments, and they can do this at their own speed. They also have some formal class teaching when this is appropriate. We encourage our pupils to use the library, and we teach them the skills they need in order to do this efficiently. As the pace of life continues to increase ,we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through lift, being on the go from morning till night, it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body. Stress is an natural part of everyday lift and there is no way to avoid it. In fact ,it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be .A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation adn give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress,in whatever form,we react both chemically and physically. Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and , fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of obergrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way. First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseaed or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but itis a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the desease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hurs and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts yu make will bleed. If this does happen,it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly. 1.Pruning should be done to ______. a.make the tree grow taller

Their history is fast becoming one of the legends of the Old West. Horace Austin Warner Tabor was a school teacher in Vermont. With his first wife and two children he left Vermont by covered wagon in 1855 to homestead in Kansas. Perhaps he did not find farming to his liking, or perhaps he was lured by rumors of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines. At any rate, a few years later he moved west to the small Colorado mining camp known as California Gulch, which he later renamed Leadville when he became its leading citizen. “Great deposits of lead are sure to be found here.” he said. As it turned out, it was silver, not lead, that was to make Leadville’s fortune and wealth. Tabor knew little about mining himself, so he opened a general store, which sold everything from boots to salt, flour, and tobacco.『It was his custom to “grubstake” prospective miners, in other words, to supply them with food and supplies, or“grub”, while they looked for ore, in return for which he would get a share in the mine if one was discovered.』①He did this for a number of years, but no one that he aided ever found anything of value. Finally one day in the year 1878, so the story goes, two miners came in and asked for “grub”. Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because he had lost too much money that way. These were persistent, however, and Tabor was too busy to argue with them. “Oh help yourself. One more time won’t
