2021年高二上学期第十七次周练英语试题含答案

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career (职业).

I wasn't an excellent student because I didn't do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn't have much to offer.

I just accepted that I wasn't the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn't too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she'd give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn't often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification (资格证书) if I wanted to work with children.

I didn't think I would be accepted because I didn't take many exams in school.

She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I've got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren't top of the class at school.

In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were terrible.

First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice. I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night. X k B 1 . c o m

I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid the lowest wage of that time—two dollars an hour. Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible. I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $100 a week.

But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions. During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes

in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.

I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked. By the time I left, I was determined never to go back there again.

C

I had my first job at the age of thirteen, when a friend of my mother who owned

a bookshop hired me for six hours a week to help her in the shop. I was very proud to earn my own pocket money and my parents never interfered with how I spent it, even when I was spending it foolishly. They believed that by earning money, spending it, and learning from the mistakes, I would bee more mature and responsible about how to handle work, relationships with others, and money.

Like many American parents, my parents also let me and my brothers do things over which they worried a great deal. When I was sixteen, for example, after I finished high school and before I entered university, I wanted to spend the summer months traveling around Europe. My mother was against the idea of my traveling alone at such a young age, but my father felt that it would be a great experience for me. In the end, my father won the argument on condition that I limited my traveling to France, my mother's home, where I had many uncles, aunts and cousins spread out through the country who could provide shelter and help if I needed them.

Three years later, my younger brother decided to take a year off after his first year in univeristy and travel through the United States and the Caribbean.Again my mother was very worried and not eager to see my brother leave school, but my father encouraged him and my brother had a fascinating year working his way on trains and ships to earn passage to different ports and cities, and discovering many fascinating places and people.

These kinds of experiences are probably rare for children in many countries but in the US they are fairly mon. Most parents start pushing their children at a young age to do small things by themselves. By the time they have finished high school, many American kids have already had part-time jobs, traveled around the US or other countries on their own, have selected the university they plan to attend and maybe even decided on their future career, and so on.

Margaret, married with two small children, has been working for the last seven years as a night cleaner, cleaning offices in a big building.

She trained as a nurse, but had to give it up when her elder child became seriously ill. “I would have liked to go back to it, but the shifts(工作班次) are all wrong for me, as I have to be home to get the children up and off to school.”

So she works as a cleaner instead, from 9 p.m. till 6 a.m. five nights a week for just £90, before tax and insurance. “It's better than it was last year, but I still think that people who work ‘unsocial hours’ should get a bit extra.”

The hours she's chosen to work meant that she sees plenty of the children, but very little of her husband. However, she doesn't think that puts any pressure on their relationship.

Her work isn't physically very hard, but it's not exactly pleasant, either. “I do get angry with people who leave their offices like a place for raising pigs. If they realized people like me have to do it, perhaps they'd be a bit more careful.”

The fact that she's working all night doesn't worry Margaret at all. Unlike some dark buildings at night, the building where she works is fully lit, and the women work in groups of three. “Since I've got to be here, I try to enjoy myself——and I usually do, because of the other girls. We all have a good laugh, so the time never drags.”

Another challenge Margaret has to face is the reaction of other people when she tells them what she does for a living. “They think you're a cleaner because you don't know how to read and write,” said Margaret. “I used to think what my parents would say if they knew what_I'd_been_doing,_but I don't think that way any more. I don't dislike the work though I can't say I'm mad about it.”

48.Margaret quit her job as a nurse because________

A.she wanted to earn more money to support her family

B.she had suffered a lot of mental pressure

C.she needed the right time to look after her children

D.she felt tired of taking care of patients

49.Margaret gets angry with people who work in the office because________.

A.they never clean their offices

B.they look down upon cleaners

C.they never do their work carefully

D.they always make a mess in their offices

50.When at work, Margaret feels________.

A.light-hearted because of her fellow workers

B.happy because the building is fully lit

C.tired because of the heavy workload

D.bored because time passed slowly

51.The underlined part in the last paragraph implies that Margaret's parents would________.

A.help care for her children

B.regret what they had said

C.show sympathy for her

D.feel disappointed in her

Imagine a worker who never gets tired. This employee needs no lunch hours or holidays. Working 24 hours a day in no problem. Best of all, he or she is both

accurate and efficent. There are few mistakes and tasks are finished quickly.

Any manufacturer would want a worker like this in a facotry. Many more products could be made and sold if workers never stopped. That's why there are more and more robots at work today. Robots do a wide variety of tasks. They weld (焊接), drill, and paint new cars. They locate underwater pollution sites. Robots handle poisons. Most of their work is too dangerous, difficult, or unpleasant for people to do. By doing the dirty work, a robot is a worker's helper, or aide.

Few robots look anything like people. They are machines. Like other pieces of machinery, they e in different shapes and sizes. The way they are built depends on the jobs they do. Most have a single arm that can lift things. Most are built to handle tools.

Each robot has a puter inside it. The puter tells it what to do. Skilled technicians enter directions into this puter. They are trained for this job.

The years ahead may be the era (时代) of robots. People are using them more and more. Already robots have explored (探索) active volcanoes and the ocean floor. Modern robots can maneuver in space. With their skillful movements, they can serve satellites that cannot be reached by humans. Some new uses will include havesting crops and working in open pit mines. Robots can help us to live better and learn more about our world.

Every expression seems to say, “This is worse than freezing water.” The serious side to this trend is the good cause it’s all in aid of. The challenge aims to raise awareness of a rare brain cancer that affects young children. It was started by Aubregh Nicholas, an 11-year-old US kid. A I think machine power is better than human power because we cannot survive without our daily used machines like bikes, coolers, computers, etc. Started on 14-Apr-2008 By Smith E-mail: rksscet12@https://www.sodocs.net/doc/ea12939302.html, Johnson 6-May-2008 Yes, it’s very clear that machine power is better than man power. But machine power has its limitations (局限). It cannot survive without electricity and manhandling. If it doesn’t have these two then it is completely useless. So man should not completely depend on machines. One more point is that because of the use of machines man has become lazy. This laziness has brought in many problems like obesity, arthritis (关节炎) and other health problems. But I am not saying that man should completely turn from machine power to man power. He should have a balance of both. Even I can’t think of life without a car, a computer and a cooler. Sally 9-May-2008 Humans only created the machines. So, human power is greater than machine power. To do the things quickly we created the machines. But machines cannot think. That thinking power beats machine power. Tina 17-May-2008 But without humans there is no value of any machine. If someone wants to use his machine perfectly then one must have expert labor or man power. Tommy 19-May-2008 Hi to all, my opinion is that human power is more powerful than machine power, because human beings created the machines. Human brain works more com-pared to machines. Mike
