A

(2017·浙江严州中学模拟)I got invited to go with some friends to a game at another school. A senior will be driving us, and I think she's a good driver, but it's someone my parents don't know. I want to tell my parents where I'm going, but what if I ask and they say “no”? I'll end up wishing I never mentioned it and just went ahead and did it anyway.

If you want more privileges, it's best to build a track record of honesty and trust. Letting a parent know where you're going is always a good idea.

You may worry that telling your parents puts you at risk of getting “no” for an answer. But there's a good chance your parents might be OK with you going. If you go but don't tell them, you risk losing something more important — your parents' trust.

Parents who find out their kids did something behind their backs may be less likely to give permission to do things in the future. When trust is broken like this, parents wonder if teens are trying to hide something — and what they imagine can be far worse than the reality.

Before you talk to your parents about the game, think about which approach will help them feel most comfortable with giving you more freedom. Maybe they'd like to meet the person driving or talk to friends who have driven with her in the past. If your parents have questions or hesitate about letting you go, find out what their worries are and then do your best to answer them.

(2018届高三·瑞安四校联考)A taxi driver taught me a million dollar lesson in customer satisfaction and expectation. Motivational speakers charge thousands of dollars to give training to company executives and staff. It cost me a $12 taxi ride.

I had flown into Dallas for the purpose of calling on a customer. Time was limited and my plan included a quick turn-around trip from and back to the airport. A spotless taxi pulled up. The driver rushed to open the passenger door for me and made sure I was comfortably seated before he closed the door. As he got in the driver's seat, he mentioned that the neatly-folded Wall Street Journal next to me was for my use. He then showed me several tapes and asked me what type of music I would enjoy. I could not believe the service I was receiving! I took the opportunity to say,“Obviously you take great pride in your work. You must have a story to tell.”

“You bet,” he replied,“I used to be in Microsoft. But I got tired of it, thinking my best would never be good enough. I decided to find my position in life where I could feel proud of being the best I could be. I knew I would never be a rocket scientist, but I love driving cars, helping people and feeling like I have done a full day's work and done it well. I thought about my personal strengths and ... wham! I became a taxi driver. One thing I know for sure, to be good in my business I could simply meet the expectations of my passengers. But, to be GREAT in my business, I have to go above the customer's expec tations! I like both the sound and the return of being ‘great’ better than just getting by being ‘average’.”

D.The writer paid less for the ride.

5.What caused the writer's curiosity about the taxi driver?

A.His wonderful CD.

B.His touching speech.

C.His high-quality service.

As you lie on the ground with your hands behind your head and

your knees bent, you lift your upper body towards your knees. That's how you do a traditional sit-up, an exercise many of us have been doing since elementary school. However, the benefits of this abdominal (腹部的) workout are now in doubt.

Earlier last month, an editorial from the Navy Times, a US military publication, said that the sit-up is “viewed as a key cause of lower back injuries”. A study conducted by the US National Center for Biotechnology Information confirmed that 56 percent of the injuries in the US army's fitness test result from sit-ups. The Canadian Armed Forces banished the sit-up from its fitness test for the same reason.

In addition to its health disadvantages, the sit-up i s also seen as lacking efficiency.

A new report from Harvard Medical School showed that traditional sit-ups only target certain muscle groups instead of strengthening the entire set of core muscles.

Sit-ups can be practiced in different ways, and the variations range from V-ups, Swiss ball sit-ups and reverse sit-ups. The injury risk not only depends on the variations that people use, but also on an individual's physical well-being.

John Childs is the CEO of Evidence in Motion, a US company that trains physical therapists, and he remains skeptical about the latest study against sit-ups. He acknowledges that sit-ups can increase the stress placed on backs, but he doesn't see a direct link between sit-ups and back pain. “The most important thing is for people to

perform exercises they enjoy so they'll continue doing them,” Childs told The Wall Street Journal. “Staying active and doing regular exercise the old-fashioned way is far more advantageous than doing nothing.”

8.The underlined word “banished” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.A.cancelled B.protected

C.accepted D.criticized

故选A。

9.Which of the following might be John Childs' opinion on sit-ups?

A.He realizes the latest study about sit-ups is worth considering.

B.He acknowledges they cause back pain.

C.He suggests that if people keep doing them, they will enjoy them.

D.He is positive about them despite the disadvantages.

根据最后一段第一、二句和最后一段最后一句“Staying active and doing regular exercise the old-fashioned way is far more advantageous than doing nothing.”

10.What can be the best title for the text?

A.Building up Your Body

B.Reassessing the Sit-up

C.A New Study on Performing Exercises

D.A Good Way for Abdominal Training —the Sit-up
