解析:[听力原文] Marriage has been an important part of people’s life from the early times. Most American marriages nowadays, especially flint marriages involving young couples, are the result of mutual affection. Parents hardly ever select spouses for their children, but they can usually influence their choices by voicing disapproval of someone they consider unsuitable. Parents do not arrange marriages for their children but they are willing to offer some financial aid to the new couples. The average age of marriage in the U. S. A. is 23 for man and 21 for woman. The legal marriage age is 18 for both male and female. There are about 2,500,000 couples reporting manages in the U. 5. A. every year. The marriage rate in 1994 was 10. 5 per 1,000 people. Of 2,487,000 marriages in 1994, about 1,115,000 were unsuccessful. The divorce rate in the U. S. is so high that it produces a large number of one-parent families and causes serious social problems.

to take them again in September. There were usually a few who failed, but Rosy was determined not to be one of them. She had worked hard all year, but just before the exams she was working so hard that her sister Betty was worried about her. She was staying up too late. The night before the first exam, Betty insisted that she should have an early night and take a sleeping pill. She promised to wake her in the morning. As she was falling asleep, Rosy was worried that she might oversleep. Her mind kept jumping from subject to subject. At last, with the help of the pill, she fell asleep. In no time at all, she was sitting in the examination hall, looking at the paper. She couldn't answer any of the question. Everyone round her was writing pages and pages. However hard she thought, she couldn't find anything to write about. She kept looking at her watch. Time was running out. There was only an hour left. She started one question, wrote two sentences, gave up and tried another one. With only half an hour left she wrote another two sentences. By this time she was so worried that she started crying. A.There were two or more brothers with their wives.

B.There were many relatives. √

C.There were only grandparents and children.

D.There was one father, one mother and their children.

解析:[听力原文]14-17 The family is changing. In the past, grandparents, parents and children used to live together, and they had an extend ed family. Sometimes two or more brothers with their wives and children were part of this large family group. But family structure is changing throughout the world. The nuclear family consists of only one father, one mother and children; it's becoming the main family structure everywhere. The nuclear family offers married women some advantages: they have freedom from their relatives, and the husband does not have all the power of the family. Studies show that in nuclear families, men and women usually make an equal number of decisions about family life. But wives usually have to "pay" for the benefits of freedom and power. When women lived in extended families, sisters, grandparents and adults helped one another

with housework and childcare. In addition, older women in a large family group had important positions. Wives in nuclear families don’t often enjoy this benefit, and they have another disadvantage, too. Women generally live longer than their husbands, so older women from nuclear families often have to live alone. Studies show that women are generally less satisfied with marriage than men are. In the past, men worked outside the home and women worked inside. Housework and childcare were a full-time job, and there was no time for anything else. Now women work outside and have more freedom than they did in the past, but they still have to do most of the housework. The women usually have two full-time jobs, and they have not much free time.

(2).What advantages does the nuclear family offer women?(分数:1.00)

C.The women have more freedom and can share in decisions. √

C.Husbands have to share power with their wives and help them with housework and childcare.

D.Family structure is more patriarchal in the nuclear family.

解析:

(4).Why are many women dissatisfied with marriage and the nuclear family?(分数:1.00)

B.They have too much work and not much free time. √

C.They want to stay home and do the housework.

A.30

B.27 √

C.65

D.35

解析:[听力原文]18-20 Between 1987 and 1991, three groups of American women, numbering 27 in all, between the ages of 35 and 65,were given month-long tests to determine how they would respond to conditions resembling those aboard the space shuttle. Though carefully selected from among many applicants, the women were volunteers and pay was barely above the mini mum wage. They were not allowed to smoke or drink alcohol during the tests, and they were expected to tolerate each other's company at close quarters for the entire period. Among other things, they had to stand pressure three times the force of gravity and carry out both physical and mental tasks while exhausted from strenuous physical exercise. At the end of ten days, they had to spend further

twenty days absolutely confined to bed, during which time they suffered backaches and other discomforts, and when they were finally allowed up, the more physically active women were especially subject to pains due to a slight calcium loss. Results of the tests suggest that women will have significant advantages over men in space. They need less food and less oxygen and they stand up to radiation better. Men's advantages in terms of strength and stamina, meanwhile, are virtually wiped 'out by the zero-gravity condition in space.

{{B}}TEXT A{{/B}}

Men seem to have always taken an interest in meteorites, but not until the early nineteenth century were these objects considered worth preserving for scientific study.

In the beginning, people believed that because meteorites fell from the heavens, they were either gods themselves or messages from the gods. Thus the more civilized of early men carefully kept the meteorites, draping them in costly linens and anointing them with oil. In many instances, the people built special temples in which the meteorites were to be worshiped. Meteorite worshiped was common long in the Mediterranean area, and in Africa, India, Japan, and Mexico: such worship still persists in some regions.

Although many people held meteorites in reverence particularly if they were seen to fall, other practical minded individuals made good use of the durable and easily worked alloy provided by nature in the nickel-iron meteorites. They frequently used of this metal to make tools, and often pots and other utensils. Throughout history, meteoritic iron has been used in the manufacture of special swords, daggers, and knives for members of royalty. Attila and other early conquerors of Europe boasted of "swords form heaven". As late as the end of nineteenth century, several swords were made from a Japanese iron meteorite at the command of a member of the Japanese court.

(1).In the nineteenth century men began to ______.(分数:1.00)

A.investigate practical uses for meteoritic iron

B.study meteorites scientifically √

C.take more than a casual interest in meteorites

D.preserve meteorites

(2).Meteorite worship grew from the belief that meteorites were ______.(分数:1.00)

A.signs of special favor

B.messengers of the gods √

C.swords from heaven

D.signs of god's displeasure

(3).The more civilized early men tended to ______.(分数:1.00)

A.make practical use of meteorites

B.preserve meteorites carefully √

C.have no interest in meteorites

D.recognize what meteorites actually were

(4).The men who first made use of meteoritic metal were ______.(分数:1.00)

A.small isolated tribes

B.those who did not revere meteorites √

C.nineteenth century scientists

D.warriors

(5).Until the end of the nineteenth century meteoritic iron was used to ______.(分数:1.00)

A.provide special weapons for royalty √

B.build churches and temples

C.manufacture sturdy tools

D.all of the above

因为在文中提到“Throughout history meteoritic iron has been used in the manufacture of special swords, daggers, and knives for members of royalty”和“As late as the end of the nineteenth century, several swords were made from a Japanese iron meteorite at the command of a member of the Japanese court.”

TEXT B

1 NEW DELHI, India (CNN) - Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has conceded defeat in parliamentary elections in a stunning voting upset that should see the return of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty to power.

2 Vajpayee - who called the election six months early - is also expected to resign later Thursday, BJP President Venkaiah Naldu said.

3 The move follows a stronger than anticipated showing from the main Congress party headed by Italian born-Sonia Gandhi.

4 Though the party won't be able to form a majority, the stage has now been set for Gandhi to become the next prime minister in the world's biggest democracy.

5 Counting is continuing but unofficial trends by major TV stations and early results have Congress leading the BJP and likely to win over 200 seats in the 543-member lower house, or Lok Sabha.

6 The immediate result of the vote count is likely to be a hung parliament, with no party gaining a clear majority of 272 seats.

7 Senior Congress officials say they are confident they will be able to form a government with the help of left-leaning parties, CNN New Delhi Bureau Chief Satinder Bindra reports.

8 "We have not got the mandate of the people, we have decided to sit in the opposition," BJP President Naidu announced Thursday.

9 Gandhi, 57, is the widow of Rajiv who was assassinated in 1991 by Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels. Rajiv is the son of former prime minister Indira Gandhi and grandson of India's first premier, Jawaharlal Nehru.

10 India's last female leader was Indira Gandhi, who was assassinated while in power in 1984.

11 Gandhi, and her popular children Rahul and Priyanka, have revitalized the Congress party, leading it to defy opinion polls that only weeks ago suggested they had no hope of faring well in this election. Vajpayee called the early election in a seemingly unassailable position - boosted by a booming economy and also a strengthening peace process with neighbor and arch-rival, Pakistan.

12 Congress party officials said they would keep pursuing a peace dialogue with Pakistan, while Islamabad - which had been hopeful the BJP-led ruling coalition would be reelected - says it is hopeful talks will continue.

13 The 79-year-old Vajpayee had sought a fourth term as prime minister, arguing he had earned another five years in office because he had turned the economy around.

14 Early opinion polls had indicated that Vajpayee s ruling Hindu nationalist-led coalition would easily win a new five-year term.

15 In contrast, the Congress party and its allies have been championing the nation's poor, which the party says has been left out of India's new found prosperity.

16 While Indians have traditionally voted on party, caste and religious lines, this election has been fought on bread-and-butter issues such as jobs, prosperity, water and electricity.

Imagine eating everything delicious you want - with none of the fat. That would be great, wouldn't it?

New "fake fat" products appeared on stone shelves in the United States recently, but not everyone is happy about it. Makers of the products, which contain a compound called olestra, say food manufacturers can now eliminate fat from certain foods. Critics, however, say the new compound can rob the body of essential vitamins and nutrients (营养物) and can also cause unpleasant side effects in some people. So it's up to consumers to decide whether the new fat-free products taste good enough to keep eating. Chemists discovered olestra in the late 1960s, when they were searching for a fat that could be digested by infants more easily. Instead of finding the desired fat, the researchers created a fat that can't be digested at all.

Normally, special chemical in the intestines (肠) "grab" molecules of regular fat and break them down so they can be used by the body. A molecule of regular fat is made up of three molecules of substances called fatty acids.

The fatty acids are absorbed by the intestines and bring with them the essential vitamins A, D, E and K. when fat molecules are present in the intestines with any of those vitamins, the vitamins attach to the molecules and are carded into the bloodstream.

Olestra, which is made from six to eight molecules of fatty acids, is too large for the intestines to absorb. It just slides through the intestines without being broken down. Manufacturers say it's that ability to slide unchanged through the intestines that makes olestra so valuable as a fat substitute. It provides consumers with the taste of regular fat without any bad effects on the body. But critics say olestra can prevent vitamins A, D, E and K from being absorbed. It can also prevent the absorption of carotenoids (类胡萝卜素), compounds that may reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, etc.

Manufacturers are adding vitamins A, D, E and K as well as carotenoids

to their products now. Even so, some nutritionists are still concerned that people might eat unlimited amounts of food mad with the fat substitute without worrying about how many calories they are consuming.

A.it passes though the intestines without being absorbed √

B.it facilitates the absorption of vitamins by the body

C.it helps reduce the incidence of heart disease

A.It may impair the digestive system.

B.It may affect the overall fat intake.

C.It may increase the risk of cancer. √

A.It may lead to the over-consumption of vitamins.

B.People may be induced to eat more than is necessary. √

C.The function of the intestines may be weakened.

D.It may trigger a new wave of fake food production.
