(2013·江西六校联考)Thank you.President Bok,former President Rudenstine, incoming President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, parents, and especially, the graduates.

I want to thank Harvard for this honor.I’ve been waiting more than 30 years to say this:“Dad,I al ways told you I’d come back and get my degree.”I’ll be changing my job next year, and it will be nice to finally have a college degree on my resume.I guess that makes me valedictorian of my own special class.I did the best of everyone who failed.

I applaud the graduates for taking a much more direct route to your degrees. For my part,I’m just happy that the Harvard Crimson called me “Harvard’s most successful dropout”.But taking a serious look back,I do have one big regret,I left Harvard with no real awareness of the awful inequities (不平等) in the world.I learned a lot here at Harvard about new ideas in economics and politics.I got great exposure to the advances being made in the sciences. But humanity’s greatest advances are not in its discoveries—but in how those discoveries are applied to reduce inequity.Whether through democracy, strong public education, quality health care, or broad economic opportunity, reducing inequity is the highest human achievement.

I left campus knowing little about the millions of young people cheated out of educational opportunities here in this country. And I knew nothing about the millions of people living in unspeakable poverty and disease in developing countries. It took me decades to find out.

You graduates came to Harvard at a different time. You know more about the world’s inequities than the classes that came before. In your years here,I hope you’ve had a chance to think about how,in this age of accelerating technology,we can finally take on these inequities, and we can solve them.

Now,this task is open-ended.It can never be finished. But a conscious effort to answer this challenge can change the world.Yes,inequity has been with us forever, but the new tools we have to cut through complexity have not been with us forever. They are new. They can help us make the most of our caring—and that’s why the future can be different from the past. The defining and ongoing innovations of this age—biotechnology, the personal computer, and the Internet give us a chance we’ve never had before to end extreme poverty and end death from preventable disease.

A.Humanity’s greatest advance

B.Harvard’s most successful dropout

(2013·日照重点中学第二次诊断) The “Occupy Wall Street” movement gained more support on Wednesday as unions and students joined in,speaking out against Wall Street greed and economic inequality. With the protests developing from a group of young people’s camping out near the New York Stock Exchange on Sept.17 to large-scale movements across the country and around the world, people can’t help asking:What has led to “Occupy Wall Street”?

Usually, rebellious movements can be easily set off by depression and recession (衰退).Three years after the severe economic crisis, the U.S.economy now is stuck again.Protesters are not satisfied with the present economic situation since unemployment rate is above 9 percent and economic growth has slowed. The housing market is still struggling for a recovery three years after the bubble burst.People are losing their houses even after they have paid a large amount of mortgage (抵押).It is getting difficult for young people to find jobs.People fear that a similar crisis like the one in 2008 may be already on its way.

It is Wall Street that possesses the most riches, filled with greed and corruption. It is Wall Street greed that,at least partly, led to the financial crisis and economic recession in 2008.It is Wall Street’s “fat cats” who take taxpayers’ aid money as their own big bonus. With the growing economic crisis around the world, people realize that Wall Street is responsible for it.So they try to target people who created the crisis.

The majority of the protesters are young people under 30.Many of them are unemployed. Some are students with mountains of loans. Some are hard-working people about to lose their houses. They are complaining that the hard-working middle class is getting poor, while Wall Street stays wealthy.

William Cohan, author of Money and Po w er:Ho w Goldman Sachs Came to Rule the World, wrote recently that Wall Street not only learned nothing from the 2008 crisis, they are also trying to kill all reforms that might “break this dangerous cycle in which bankers get very rich while the rest of working people suffer from their mistakes”.

6.What is the main idea of the passage?

A.The cause of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

B.The demand of the protesters of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

C.The popularity of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

D.The development of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.

7.According to the second paragraph, what set off the “Occupy Wall Street” movement?

A.The housing market.

B.The bad economic situation.

C.The mortgage.

D.The high unemployment rate.

8.People are afraid that ________.

A.the bankers will become greedier

B.the movement will not get enough support

C.Wall Street learned nothing from the 2008 economic

crisis

D.another economic crisis is likely to happen

9.We can learn from the passage that Wall Street is the symbol of ________in the USA.

A.civilization B.power

C.wealth D.fashion

10.We can infer that William Cohan ________.

A.is the organizer of the “Occupy Wall Street” mo-

vement

B.lives on Wall Street

C.is against the “Occupy Wall Street” movement

D.approves of the “Occupy Wall Street” movement

sp/time witness=see great changes目睹、经历巨变;watch观看,注视;observe观察,注意到;realize意识到,实现。

14.【解析】选C。ahead of time提前;have sth.done使某事被做。

1.【解析】选A。

(1)With the protests developing fr om a group of young people’s camping out near the New York Stock Exchange on Sept.17 to large-scale movements across the country and around the world, people can’t help asking: What has led to “Occupy Wall Street”?

本句中,with复合结构作状语,主句部分为people can’t help asking...

(2)It is Wall Street that possesses the most riches, filled with greed and corruption.

过去分词短语filled with greed and corruption 作定语,修饰the most riches。

6.【解析】选A。

根据第二段中的“Usually,rebellious movements can be easily set off by depression and recession(衰退).”及“Protesters are not satisfied with the present economic situ ation...”

根据第二段中的“People fear that a similar crisis like the one in 2008 may be already on its way.”

最后一段中的“...Wall Street not only learned nothing from the 2008 crisis, they are also trying to kill all reforms...”

Unit 1 Living well-Reading MARTY’S STORY Hi, my name is Marry Fielding and I guess you could say that I am "one in a million". In other words, there are not many people like me. You see, I have a muscle disease which makes me very weak, so I can't run or climb stairs as quickly as other people. In addition, sometimes I am very clumsy and drop things or bump into furniture. Unfortunately, the doctors don't know how to make me better, but I am very outgoing and have learned to adapt to my disability. My motto is: live One day at a time. Until I was ten years old I was the same as everyone else. I used to climb trees, swim and play football. In fact, I used to dream about playing professional football and possibly representing my country in the World Cup. Then I started to get weaker and weaker, until I could only enjoy football from a bench at the stadium. In the end I went into hospital for medical tests. I stayed there for nearly three months. I think I had at least a billion tests, including one in which they cut out a piece of muscle from my leg and looked at it under a microscope. Even after all that, no one could give my disease a name and it is difficult to know what the future holds. One problem is that I don't look any different from other people. So sometimes some children in my primary school would laugh, when I got out of breath after running a short way or had to stop and rest halfway up the stairs. Sometimes, too, I was too weak to go to school so my education suffered. Every time I returned after an absence, I felt stupid because I was behind the others. My life is a lot easier at high school because my fellow students have accepted me. The few who cannot see the real person inside my body do not make me annoyed, and I just ignore them. All in all I have a good life. I am happy to have found many things I can do, like writing and computer programming. My ambition is to work for a firm that develops computer software when I grow up. Last year invented a computer football game and a big company has decided to buy it from me. I have a very busy life with no time to sit around feeling sorry for myself. As well as going to the movies and football matches with my friends, I spend a lot of time with my pets. I have two rabbits, a parrot, a tank full of fish and a tortoise. To look after my pets properly takes a lot of time but I find it worthwhile. I also have to do a lot of work, especially if I have been away for a while. In many ways my disability has helped me grow stronger psychologically and become more independent. I have to work hard to live a normal life but it has been worth it. If I had a chance to say one thing to healthy children, it would be this: having a disability does not mean your life is not satisfying. So don't feel sorry for the disabled or make fun of them, and don't ignore them either. Just accept them for who they are, and give them encouragement to live as
