Most older people with so-calledtype IIdiabetes could stoptaking insulin if theywould do briskexercise for30 minutes just three times aweek, according to new medical research resultsreported in theCopenhagen newspaper B erlingske Tidende on Monday.

Results fromtestsconducted on diabetics at theCopenhagen Central Hospital Rigshospitalets Center for MuscleResearch showed that physical exercise canboost thebody'sability to utilise insulin by30per cent, the n ewspaper reported.

Thisis equal to1 the effectmost elderly diabeticsgetfrom their insulinmedication today, it said.

Researchers had a group of non-diabetic menand a group ofmenwith type II,all morethan60 yearsof age, exer cise onbicycles sixtimesaweek forthree months. After the three monthsthe doctors measured howmuchsugar the test subjectsmuscles could utilise as a measure for how

well their insulin worked.2

Associate Professor3 Dr.Flemming Dela ofthe Muscle Research Center said the tests demonstrated thatthe exercising diabetics had just as high insulinutilizationas the healthynon- exercising persons.

"This meansthatthe insulin worksjustas well for bothgroups. Physicalexercisecannot curepeople of diabetes,4 but it can eliminatealmost alltheir symptoms. A tthesame time it can put off5 the point at which they hav eto begin taking insulinorperhapscompletely avoidinsu lin treatment," Delawas quoted as saying.6

Insulin isa hormone produced by the pancreas, controllingsugar inthebody and usedagainst diabetes.

Dela said that to achieve the desiredeffectdiabetics need onlyexercise to the point where theybegintowork up7a sweat, butthatthe activityhas tobe maintain ed since itwears off8afterfive days without suffici entexercise.

Preventing ChildMaltreatment

Child maltreatmentis a global problem with serious life-long consequences. There are no reliable global estimates for the prevalenceof childmaltreatment. Data for many co untries, especially low- and middle-income countries, are lacking.

Childmaltreatmentis complexanddifficult to study. Current estimates varywidely depending on thecountryandthe methodof research used. Nonetheless, internationalstudies reveal that approximately20%of womenand 5'10%of men report beingSexually abused as children, while25-50% ofall children report being physically abused. Addition ally, manychildren are subject to1emotional abuse (sometimes referred toas2psychological abuse).

Every year,thereare anestimated31,000homicide deaths in childrenunder15. Thisnumberunderestim

Be Alert to1 Antimicrobial Resistance

The ability of micro-organisms to find ways to evadethe act

ion of thedrugs usedto cure the infectionsthey cause isincreasingly recognized as a globalpublic health issue.Somebacteria have developed mechanismswhich mak

ethemresistant to manyof theantibioticsnormally us ed fortheir treatment(multi-drug resistant bacteria),so pose particular difficulties,as there maybe few or no alternativeoptions fortherapy. Theyconstitute a growing and globalpublic health problem.WHO suggests that countriesshould be prepared to implement hospital infection control measuresto limit thespread of multi-drug resistant strains and to reinforce nationalpolicy onprudentuse of antibiotics, reducingthegeneration of antibiotic resis tant bacteria.

An article published in 7"heLancet InfectiousDisease s2on11 August2010identified anew genethatenables some types of bacteria to behighlyresistantto almost/allantibiotics. The article hasdrawnattention to the issue ofAMR3 (antimicrobial resistance), and, in particular, has raised awarenessofinfections causedbymulti-drugresistant bacteria.

Whilemulti-drug resistantbacteria arenot newand will continue to appear, this developmentrequiresmonitoring andfurther study to understand the extentand modesof transmission, andto definethe most effective measures for control.

Those called upon to be alertto the problem ofantimicrobial resistance and take appropriate action include consum ers, managersof hospitals, patients, aswell as national governments, thepharmaceuticalindustry, and international agencies.

WHOstrongly recommends that governments focus control and preventionefforts in thefollowing areas like surveillance for antimicrobial resistance;rationalantibiotic use, including education of healthcare workers and the public in the appropriate useofantibiotics;introducing orenforcinglegislation related to stopping the sellingof antibiotics without prescription;and strict adherence to infection prevention and control measures, including the use ofhand-washing measures, particularlyinhealthcare facilities.

Successful control of multidrug-resistantmicroorganisms hasbeendocumented in many countries, and the existing andwell-known infection preventionandcontrol

measures caneffectivelyreduce- transmission of multi-drugresistantorganisms if systematically implemented.

WHO will continue to support countriesto developrelevant policies, and to coordinate international efforts tocombat antimicr obial resistance. Antimicrobial resistance will bethe theme ofWHO's World Health Day2011.

Cintroduction of newregulations onthe saleofantibiotics.

D limit on the hospitals to store more antibioticdrugs than they can use.

5.What can youinfer from thepassage?

AWHO canonly recommendthe governmentsto con trol and prevent the transmission of multi- drug resistantorganisms.

B Even withthenew strains againstthe existing antibio tics, the transmission ofmulti-drug resistant organisms is still under control.

C Without the support from WHO,no country can be safe inthe war against the transmission ofmulti-drugresistant organisms.

D WHO will spare no effort inantimicrobial resistanc ein2010 andwill set a specialday for itin 2011.

The empty stretch of interstate gives way to urban congestion2, and Coyne hits the brakes as a pedestrian suddenly crosses the street in front of him. But even if he hadn’t stopped in time, the woman would have been safe. She isn’t real. Neither is the town. And Coyne isn’t really driving. Coyne is demonstrating a computerized driving simulator that is helping researchers at Old Dominion University3 (ODU) examine how in-vehicle guidance systems affect the person behind the wheel.4 The researchers want to know if such systems, which give audible or written directions, are too distracting — or whether any distractions are offset5 by the benefits drivers get from having help finding their way in unfamiliar locations.6 “We are looking at the performance and mental workload of drivers,” said Caryl Baldwin, the assistant psychology professor lending the research, which involves measuring drivers reaction time and brain activity as they respond to auditory and visual cues7. The researchers just completed a study of the mental workload8 involved in driving through different kinds of environments and heavy

Then, after returning to tile United States from a busy and tiring trip to Russia, Mr. Cousins got sick. Because he had pushed his body to the limit of its strength on the trip, a chemical change began to take place inside him. The material between his bones became weak. In less than one week after his return, he could not stand. Every move that he made was painful. He was not able to sleep at night. The doctors told Mr. Cousins that they did not know how to cure his problems and he might never get over the illness. Mr. Cousins, however, refused to give up hope. Mr. Cousins thought that unhappy thoughts were causing bad chemical changes in his body. He did not want to take medicine to cure himself. Instead, he felt that happy thoughts or laughter might cure his illness. He began to experiment on himself while still in the hospital by watching funny shows on television. Mr. Cousins quickly found that ten minutes of real laughter during the day gave him two hours of pain-free sleep at night. Deciding that the doctors could not help him, Mr. Cousins left the hospital and checked into a hotel room where he could continue his experiments with laughter. For eight days, Mr. Cousins rested in the hotel room watching funny shows on television, reading funny books, and sleeping whenever he felt tired. An Essential Scientific Process All life on the earth depends upon green plants. Using sunlight, the plants produce their own food. Then animals feed upon the plants. They take in the nutrients the plants have made and stored. But that’s not all. Sunlight also helps a plant produce oxygen. Some of the oxygen is used by the plant, but a plant usually produces more oxygen than it uses. The excess oxygen is necessary for animals and other organisms to live. The process of changing light into food and oxygen is called photosynthesis. Besides light energy from the sun, plants also use water and carbon dioxide. The water gets to the plant through its roots. The carbon dioxide enters the leaves through tiny openings called stomata. The carbon dioxide travels to chloroplasts, special cells in the bodies of green plants. This is where photosynthesis takes place. Chloroplasts contain the chlorophylls that give plants their green color. The chlorophylls are the molecules that trap light energy. The trapped light energy changes water and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen and a simple sugar called glucose. Carbon dioxide and oxygen move into and out of the stomata. Water vapor also moves out of the stomata. More than 90 percent of water a plant takes in through its roots escapes through the stomata. During the daytime, the stomata of most plants are open. This allows carbon dioxide to enter the leaves for photosynthesis. As night falls, carbon dioxide is not needed. The stomata of most plants close. Water loss stops. If photosynthesis ceased, there would be little food or other organic matter on the earth. Most organisms would disappear. The earth’s atmosphere would no longer contain oxygen. Photosynthesis is essential for life on our planet. 1.Then animals feed upon the plants. 1.In the first paragraph, the word “excess” means Aheavy.

(3) “We hire talent. ” Those are the words of Rod Franz, a civil service computer technology director, responding to the question of opportunities for women who are interested in pursuing careers as computer technicians. On at least one of three shifts in his operation, the male-female ratio is 50-50. That is not surprising because government and educational institutes are required by the law to make every effort to open hiring opportunities to women and minority workers. What may be even more interesting to young women is that, according to Franz, private industry is hiring women and minorities away from us. And, since private industry pays more, it succeeds. Managers in the rapidly growing computer service field are quick to agree. They strongly encourage women to train for technician jobs, and they actively recruit female technicians across the country. They believe that this career field offers a wealth of possibility for women. A recent study by the Devry Institute of Technology that involved 100 employment managers in the Chicago area showed, too, that the number of women entering the field of computer science is on the rise, and that those already in the field are moving up. A significant increase in the number of women
