Most smokers sincerely want to quit. They know cigarettes threaten their health, set a bad example for their children, and cost a large amount of money. 1 It’s something each person has to decide for himself/herself, and will require a personal commitment by the smoker.
2 Many smokers use the cigarette as a kind of walking stick in moments of stress or discomfort, and on occasion
it may work. But the heavy smoker, the person who tries to handle severe personal problems by smoking heavily all day long,
is to discover that cigarettes do not help him/her deal with
his/her problems effectively.
Because smoking is a form of addiction, 80 percent of smokers who quit usually experience some withdrawal symptoms.
3 Psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, short-term depression, and inability to concentrate, may also appear. The main psychological symptom is increased irritability (易怒). People become so irritable, in fact, that they say they feel like killing somebody.
Some people seem to lose all their energy and drive, wanting only to sleep. 4 They become so over energized that they can’t find enough activity to burn off their excess energy. For instance, one woman said she cleaned out all her closets completely and was ready to go next door to start on her neighbor’s. Both these extremes, however, eventually level off. The symptoms may be intense for two or three days, but within
10 to 14 days after quitting, most disappear. The truth is that after people quit smoking, they have more energy, and generally they will need less sleep, and feel better about themselves.
Quitting smoking can extend the ex-smoker’s life. 5 Most smokers state that immediately after they quit smoking, they start noticing dramatic differences in their overall health and life.
A. But nobody can force a smoker to quit.
B. Others react in exactly the opposite way.
C. It is important to identify what you use smoking for.
D. Also, it adds new happiness and meaning to one’s current life.
E. These may include the headache, light-headedness, and chest pains.
F. The choice of a substitute depends on what will achieve the same effects.
G. However, there is no evidence that quitting smoking will lead to physical violence. 二、语法填空(每题1.5分;共15分)

School is not only a place where children learn reading,
writing and math, but also a place where they learn to get along
with other people and develop social skills. Although students
don’t get grades on social skills from their teachers, their peers
are constantly giving them “grades” every day. 1 Conversely,
the child will feel disconnected and be left out.
While school can be a positive social experience for many
children, for others it can be a nightmare. Failing a social test can
be more painful to children than failing a reading or science test.
2 They don’ t know how to deal with the topic.
Children are born with innate social competencies just as
they are born with other innate strengths and weaknesses in
abilities such as attention, memory, and language skills. 3
Children who have attention problems may have trouble listening
and attending in conversations, be unable to talk or say things at
inappropriate times. Children with memory problems may have
difficulty following a conversation because they cannot remember
what was just said. Children with language and communication
difficulties may have difficulty keeping up with the pace of a
conversation, especially when there is a group of children talking.
4 They seem to have a knack (诀窍) for making
friends and getting along with others. Other children are popular
because they are on the school football team, play in a band, can
draw very well or are really good-looking. Popular students are
typically the leaders at school. They are self-confident and
influential.
Other students are ignored or unnoticed by their peers. No
one really dislikes or likes them. These children are not the ones
picked first for activities. 5 Some of these children don’t
like being ignored but others don’t mind because they are more
interested in solitary activities or prefer interactions with adults
more than with peers.
A. Meanwhile, they are not the ones that are teased either.
B. For them, social skills can be the hardest subject to pass in
school.
C. Social skills play a very important role in a child’s
emotional health.
D. Without friendships, school can be a very unhappy and
lonely place.
E. Weakness in these other skills can negatively affect a
child’s social ability.
F. Some children are popular and very well liked by all or
most of their peers.
G. If a child does well in these “tests”, he will enjoy school
and look forward to coming to school.

Valleys are one of the most common landforms on the Earth.
They are formed through erosion (侵蚀) or the gradual wearing
down of the land by wind and water. Their form depends on what
is eroding it, the slope of the land, the type of rock or soil and the
amount of time the land has been eroded. There are three
common types of valleys: V-shaped valleys, U-shaped valleys and
flat floored valleys. 1
A V-shaped valley, sometimes called a river valley, is a
narrow valley with steeply sloped sides that appear similar to the
letter “V”. They are formed by strong streams, which over time
have cut down into the rock. These valleys form with streams in
..
their “youthful” stage. 2 An example of a V-shaped valley
is the Grand Canyon in the Southwestern United States.
A U-shaped valley is a valley with a profile similar to the letter “U”. 3 They are formed by glacial (冰川的) erosion during the last glaciation. This is because ice sheets flowed down the pre-existing river or V-shaped valleys and caused the bottom
of the “V”to level out into a “U”shape, resulting in a wider, deeper valley.
The third type of the valley is called a flat-floored valley. These valleys, like V-shaped valleys, are formed by streams. 4 Over time, the stream continues to erode the valley’s soil, widening it further. With flood, the material that is eroded and carried in the stream is deposited which builds up the floodplain and the valley. During this process, the shape of the valley changes from a V or U shaped valley into one with a broad flat valley floor.
5 They are close to rivers which enable easier movement and also provide resources like water, good soils and food such as fish. The valleys themselves were also helpful as valley walls often blocked winds and other severe weather if the settlement patterns were positioned correctly. Valleys also provided a safe place for settlement and made invasions difficult.
A. A valley is normally occupied by a river or stream.
B. During this period, streams flow rapidly down steep slopes.
C. The river begins to erode the bank of its channel instead
of valley walls.
D. The shape of valleys varies but they are typically steep-sided canyons or broad plains.
E. This type of valley is characterized by steep sides that curve in at the base of the valley wall.
F. The difference is that they are no longer in their youthful stage, and are instead in a mature stage.
G. Valleys have played an important role in people’s life since the beginning of human development.

Punishment is a term used to refer to any change that occurs
after a behavior that reduces the likelihood that the behavior will
occur again in the future. Punishment is focused on reducing or
getting rid of unwanted behaviors. Punishment can be effective in
some cases. 1 Prison is one example. After being sent to jail
for a crime, people often continue committing crimes once they
are away from prison.
Why is it that punishment seems to work in some instances,
but not in others? Researchers have found a number of factors
that contribute to how effective punishment is. First, punishment
is more likely to lead to a reduction in behavior if it immediately
follows the behavior. 2 It may help explain why sending
people to jail does not always lead to a reduction in criminal
behaviors.
Another factor is that punishment achieves greater results
when it is consistently applied. 3 For example, people
often continue to drive over the speed limit even after receiving a
speeding ticket. Why? Because the behavior is inconsistently
punished.
4 One of them is that any behavior changes that
result from punishment are often temporary. Perhaps the greatest
one is the fact that punishment makes people not perform certain
actions, but it does not actually offer any information about more
appropriate or desired behaviors.
Another thing to consider about punishment is that it can
have unintended and undesirable consequences. For example,
approximately 75 percent of parents in the United States report
hitting their children. 5 For this reason, psychologists
suggest that any short-term gains from using punishment should
be weighed because it may produce potential long-term
consequences.
A. Punishment also has some notable disadvantages.
B. Parents and teachers consider punishment an effective
tool.
C. Prison sentences often occur long after the crime has
been committed.
D. There are two types of punishment, positive punishment
and negative punishment.
E. In fact, it can be difficult to administer a punishment every
single time a behavior occurs.
F. However, you can probably think of situations where
punishment does not reduce a behavior.
G. Researchers have found that this type of physical
punishment can lead to antisocial behaviors among children.

People didn’t have to waste a lot of energy and time to go from one shop to other to choose what they like. All they need to do is sit in front their computers and click the mouse. Therefore, it also has disadvantages. The first is that the consumers cannot see the goods or trying them on personally. The second disadvantage is that some shops on the Internet may not deliver something to you after they get money from you. Once be cheated, you will find you have nowhere to complain.

Wilhelm Hofmann and his team at the University of Chicago define self-control as “the ability to control or change one’s inner responses”. 1 However, it seems that as an immediate consequence of leading lives of constant self-denial (自我拒绝), they aren’t likely to gain a lot of pleasure from life.
2 To start, 414 adults completed an online survey. In the survey, they rated their self-control by indicating how much they agreed with 14 statements, such as, “I do certain things that are bad for me, if they are fun”. The participants also reported their current emotional state as well as their overall life satisfaction.
Holfmann’s team then turned to data from a study in which 205 adults were given smartphones and prompted to report their emotions at random moments throughout the week. 3 If so, they had to report how hard they tried to resist them, and whether they ultimately ended up acting on them.
The researchers found that the more self-control people reported having, the more satisfied they reported being with their lives in the long run. 4 In fact, when they further analyzed the data, researchers found that such people’s increased happiness to a large extent accounted for the increased life satisfaction.
These results indicate that as they go about their daily lives, people with a lot of self-control appear to generally be in higher spirits: in the long ran, they’re happier with their lives. To explain why this would be so, the researchers conducted another online survey. What they figured out is that instead of constantly denying themselves, people high in self-control are simply less
likely to find themselves in situations where that’s even an issue.
They don’t waste time fighting inner battles over whether or not
to eat a second piece of cake. 5 And that, it would seem,
makes them happier ... if still just a little bit sad.
A. In a word, they are not bothered about such little desires.
B. Wilhelm Hofmann and his team do research to check
these general ideas.
C. They find it hard to control their desire to play video
games before an exam.
D. At the same time, they were also asked to report whether
they were experiencing any desires.
E. Researchers are still uncertain why some people are better
able to control their inner desires.
F. It is generally believed that in the long run people with a
lot of self-control might benefit from the satisfaction of being
better able to realize long-term goals.
G. And contrary to what the researchers were expecting,
people with more self-control were also more likely to be happy
in the short term.

Seven or more hours ’ sleep a night boosts the benefits to
the heart of a healthy lifestyle, research suggests. According to a
large study, traditional advice on exercise, diet, drinking and
smoking reduced deaths from heart diseases or strokes. l
Advice on getting enough sleep could have a major impact on
public health, said European researchers. In theory, many heart
and stroke deaths could be prevented or postponed.
2 By the end of the study, about 600 individuals had
suffered heart disease or stroke, and 129 died. The study found
that deaths were less likely in people who followed all four
positive lifestyle recommendations, taking exercise, eating a
healthy diet, drinking alcohol in moderation, and not smoking.
Observing all four behaviors was associated with a 57% lower
risk of cardiovascular (心血管的) disease and a 67% lower risk of
dying from strokes or heart diseases, according to the researchers.
But when sufficient sleep, seven or more hours a night, was
added to the other four lifestyle factors, the beneficial effect
greatly increased. 3
The researchers say other studies have shown a link between
poor sleep and cardiovascular disease. 4 “If all
participants stuck to all five healthy lifestyle factors, 36% of
composite cardiovascular disease (heart disease or stroke) and
57% of fatal cardiovascular disease could theoretically be
prevented or postponed,” said the researchers.
The public health impact of sufficient sleep, in addition to the
traditional healthy lifestyle factors, could be great. Prof Grethes Tell of the University of Bergen, Norway said the benefits of sleep
should be considered by public health experts and parents alike. 5 “From a public health point of view we should encourage people to get enough sleep and like all other healthy lifestyle
factors this needs to be taught at home,” she added. A. On the other hand, lack of sleep is becoming a problem.
B. However, even more lives were saved by having enough
sleep.
C. Researchers doubt the link between sleeping habits and disease, so further research should be done.
D. “The main message of the study is that we need to
consider sleep as an important factor for health.” she said.
E. But this is the first to look at whether sleep, added to the other four healthy lifestyle recommendations, can further reduce risk.
F. A team in the Netherlands tracked heart diseases and
strokes in more than 14,000 men and women for more than a
decade.
G. The combination of them resulted in a 65% lower risk of

“Culture shock ” describes the impact of moving from a familiar culture to one which is unfamiliar. When familiar sights, sounds, smells or tastes are no longer there you can miss them very much. There are many elements that contribute to culture shock when you go to Britain. 1 You may just find the greyness, especially during the winter months, difficult to get used to.
Many students may find British food strange. 2 Or it may seem heavy compared to what you are used to. If you have no condition to cook for yourself, you may find yourself relying on “fast ” food instead of your usual diet. Therefore, many people have to try to find a supplier of familiar food.
You may find that you miss your familiar language which at home would have been part of your everyday environment. Even if you are a fluent English speaker, it is possible that the regional accents
you discover when you arrive in the UK will make the language harder to understand. 3 Then you may feel constantly listening and speaking in a foreign language is tiring.
4 For example you may find people appear cold or always in a hurry. Or you may be surprised to see couples holding hands and kissing in public. You may find the relationships between men and women more formal or less formal than you are used to.
As well as the obvious things that hit you immediately when you arrive, every culture has unspoken rules which affect the way people treat each other. For example there will be differences in the ways people decide what is important. The British generally have a reputation for punctuality. In business and academic life keeping to time is important. 5 If you are going to be late, do try to let whoever you are meeting know.
A. Climate is the natural one.
B. Social behaviors may confuse or offend you.
C. It may taste different, or be cooked differently.
D. You may find it uncomfortable to wear heavy winter clothes.
E. You should always be on time for lectures, classes, and meetings.
F. It can be felt to a certain extent even when you go abroad on holiday.
G. In fact, you may be embarrassed to ask them to repeat what they have said.

Before I left America to study abroad in Tokyo, I was partly terrified, but mostly I was exciting. I was traveling all on my own to a place that I didn ’t know every person at all. I couldn ’t even speak the language, but I wasn ’t going to let that to stop me. Within a few month upon arriving in Tokyo, I fell in love with the city. I meet some of the most amazing people from all over the world. After one and the half years, I came back. Readjusting to an American life was difficult than adapting to a Japanese one. I wasn ’t quite prepared on the culture shock of coming back home. After coming back, I realized that my goals and views had changed complete.

Sensing phantom (幻觉的) phone vibrations is a strangely common experience. Around 80% of us have imagined a phone vibrating in our pockets when it ’s actually completely still. Almost 30 % of us have also heard non-existent ringing. Are these signs of madness caused by digital culture? Not at all. 1
You are an example of a perceptual (感知的) system, just like a fire alarm, an automatic door, or a daffodil bulb (黄水仙球茎) that must decide when spring has truly started. 2 And, similar to a daffodil bulb on a warm February morning, it has to decide whether the signals from the skin near your pocket indicate a true change in the world.
3 Working though the example of phone vibrations, we can see how this theory explains why they are a common and unavoidable part of healthy mental function.
When your phone is in your pocket, the world is in one of two possible states: the phone is either ringing or not. 4 Obviously you ’d like to match these states in the correct way. True vibrations should go with “it ’s ringing ”, and no vibrations should go with “it ’s not ringing ”. Signal Detection Theory calls these faithful matches a “hit ” and a “correct rejection ”, respectively.
But there are two other possible combinations: you could mismatch true vibrations with “it ’s not ringing ” (a “miss ”), or mismatch the absence of vibrations with “it ’s ringing ” (a “false alarm ”).
5
For situations where easy judgments can be made, such as deciding if someone says your name in a quiet room, you will probably make perfect matches every time. But when judgments are more difficult —if you have to decide whether someone says your name in a noisy room, or have to evaluate something you ’re not skilled at —mismatches will occasionally happen. And these mistakes will be either misses or false alarms.
A. This second mismatch is what ’s going on when you imagine a phantom phone vibration.
B. You also have two possible states of mind: the judgment that the phone is ringing, or the judgment that it isn ’t.
C. We can assume that people like to notice when their phone is ringing and hate missing a call.
D. In fact, phantom vibrations and ringing show a fundamental principle in psychology.
E. Your brain has to make a judgment about whether the phone in your pocket is really vibrating.
F. So, our near-perfect perceptual systems tend to try their best in an uncertain and noisy world.
G. Psychologists use a concept called Signal Detection Theory to guide their thinking about the problem of perceptual of judgments.

Even though they have no prince, governor, or ruler to make them work, ants work hard all summer, gathering food for the winter. An ant ’s brain may have the same processing power as a computer. Thousands of years ago, King Solomon wrote: “Go to the ant, consider its ways and be wise.” I find myself watching ants lately. 1 One way I overcame laziness is by studying how “ants ” operate. These are some observations I learned from ants.
Have a forward looking vision. An ant has a forward looking vision. An ant prepares for winter ahead in the summer. It gathers food for the future. Ants have a big mind.
2 Pick the load or do the task with your ability and energy. You can eat an elephant if you take bite-size pieces. You
can move a mountain if you move one pebble (卵石) at a time. Don ’t get overwhelmed by the load of laundries to fold or dishes
to do. Start with one dish or one cloth at a time. Break things into ant-size pieces. Work as a team. Ants work as a team. If one person can do 10%, two persons working together can accomplish 40%. 3 The term “learn ” stands for —“Together each achieves more ”. Learn to say “NO ”. An ant has the gift of delayed satisfaction.
It says no to so many distractions as it is busy accomplishing its
task. 4 The problem with us in the modern age is that we
have so many distractions. The power of the ant is that it can say
“no ”.
Never quit. You can kick an ant hill over but it will pick itself
up and build again. 5 Don ’t let past failure stop you. Today
