Why Americans Cal l Soccer“Soccer”

New Zealand's largest newspaper is deeply conflicted. With the World Cup underway in Brazil, the New Zealand Herald refers to the “global round-ball game”as “soccer” or “football”?It's “football” by a wide range.

We in the US,would disagree. Szymanski, a sports economist, published a paper exposing that “soccer” is an American invention. In f act, it's a British import. The Briton used it often—until it became too much of an Americanism for British English to bear.

As early as the Middle Ages, the rough outlines of soccer—a game, a ball, feet—appear to have been present in England. But it wasn't until the sport became popular among noble boys at schools in the 19th century that these young men tried to standardize(制定标准)play. The most divisive(引起争议的) issue was whether to permit “hacking(踢)”.

But that wasn't where the argue ended. In 1871, another set of clubs met in London to arrange a version of the game that involved more use of the hands.

“From then the two versions of football were distinguished to their longer titles. Rugby Football and Association Football,”Szymanski writes. “The rugby football game was shortened to ‘rugger(英式橄榄球), ' while the association football game was shortened to

‘soccer.'”

Both sports divided yet again as they spread around the world. The word “soccer”caught on in the USA in the first decade of the 20th century, to distinguish the game from American football.

Szymanski counted the frequency with which the words“foot ball” and “soccer” appeared in American and British news as far back as 1900. What he found is enchanting:_“soccer” was a recognized term in Britain in the first half of the 20th century, but it wasn't widely used until after World WarⅡ,when it was popular for a couple decades, perhaps because of the influence of American troops stationed in Britain during the war and the attraction of American culture. In the 1980s, however, Brits began rejecting them, as soccer became a more popular sport in the United States.

()38.Which of the following is TRUE?

(xx·福建高考)Life can be so wonderful, full of adventure and joy. It can also be full of challenges, setbacks and heartbreaks. Whatever our circumstances, we generally still have dreams, hopes and desires—that little something more we want for ourselves and our loved ones. Yet knowing we can have more can also create a problem, because when we go to change the way we do things, up e the old patterns and pitfalls that stopped us from seeking what we wanted in the first place.

This tension between what we feel we can have and what we're seemingly able to have is the niggling(烦人的) suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little “dead” inside because you're drop ping “you”.

So,if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?

Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges.

While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually says we can't.

That isn't a reason to stop, it's just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying

to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now.

Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release_from_the_jail_of_your_mind and you'll be on your way.

()41.It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should ________.

A.slow down and live a simple life

B.be careful when we choose to change

C.stick to our dreams under any circumstances

D.be content with what we already have

A.To focus on every detail.

B.To decide and take immediate action.

C.To listen to those close to us.

D.To think twice before we act.

()43.Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?

A.Escape from your punishment.

B.Realization of your dreams.

C.Freedom from your tension.

D.Reduction of your expectations.

()44.What does the author intend to tell us?

A.It's necessary to decide and act to get what we want.

B.It's important to learn to accept sufferings in life.

C.It's impractical to change our way of thinking.

D.It's harder than we expect to follow a new course.

It was eleven o'clock that night when Mr.Pontellier returned from his night out. He was in an excellent humor, in high spirits, and very talkative. His entrance awoke his wife, who was in bed and fast asleep when he came in. He talked to her while he undressed, telling her bits of news and gossip that he had gathered during the day. She was overe with sleep, and answered him with little words.

He thought it very discouraging that his wife, who was the sole object of his existence, showed so little interest in things which concerned him and valued so little his conversation.

Mr.Pontellier had forgotten the candies and peanuts that he had promised the boys. Still, he loved them very much and went into the room where they slept to take a look at them and make sure that they were resting fortably. The result of his investigation was far from satisfactory. He turned and shifted the youngsters about in bed. One of them began to kick and talk about a basket full of plaints.

Mr.Pontellier returned to his wife with the information that Raoul had a high fever and needed looking after.

Mrs.Pontellier was quite sure Raoul had no fever. He had gone to bed perfectly well, she said, and nothing had made him sick. Mr.Pontellier was too well familiar with fever symptoms to be mistaken. He assured her the child was burning with fever at that moment in the next room.

He reproached(责备)his wife with her inattention, her habitual neglect of the children. If it was not a mother's place to look after children, whose on earth was it? He himself had his hands

full with his business. He could not be in two places at once; making a living for his family on the street, and staying home to see that no harm done to them. He talked in a dull, repeated and insistent way.

Mrs.Pontellier sprang out of bed and went into the next room. She soon came back and said nothing. Mrs.Pontellier was by that time thoroughly awake. She began to cry a little, and wiped her eyes on the sleeve of her nightdress. She went out on the porch(走廊), where she sat down and began to rock herself in the chair.

She could not have told why she was crying. Such experiences as had just happened were not unmon in her married life. They seemed never before to have weighed much against the abundance of her husband's kindness and a uniform devotion which had e to be self-understood.

An indescribable oppression, which seemed to generate in some unfamiliar part of her consciousness, filled her whole being with vague pain. It was like a shadow, like a mist passing across her soul's summer day. It was strange and unfamiliar; it was a mood. She did not sit there plaining her husband, expressing sadness about Fate, which had directed her footsteps to the path which they had taken. She was just having a good cry all to herself.

The following morning Mr.Pontellier was up in good time to take the carriage which was to convey him to the ship. He was returning to the city to his business, and they would not see him again at the Island till the ing Saturday. He had regained his calmness, which seemed to have been somewhat weakened the night before. He was eager to be gone, as he looked forward to a lively week in the financial center.

第三部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

As the Internet and puter bee more mon, the need for security is more important than ever. According to the latest statistical analysis, it is estimated(估计)there are over 1.1 billion Internet users worldwide. The Internet provides diverse and useful resources such as Email, instant messaging, academic research, product research, paying bills, shopping, online banking, and the list goes on and on. For many of its 1.1 billion users the Internet is not just a tool but a way of life. But most users fail to take the time to research the risks involved. One of the greatest risks in the online world is puter hacking(非法入侵).

puter hacking is the unauthorized access to a puter or network of puters. Hackers, those people who illegally enter systems, may alter or delete information, steal private information, or spread viruses that can damage or destroy files. But how exactly can a hacker get into a system to

do these things?

Most hackers use information called protocols(协议) that are built into puter software. These protocols allow puters to interact with one another. Protocols are sort of like puter police officers. When a puter connects to another system, the protocols check to see if the access is valid. The protocols can also determine how much information can be shared between the two systems. Hackers can control the protocols to get unlimited access to a puter system. In fact, just the act of entering a puter network is considered hacking. This is monly called passive hacking. Passive hackers get a rush from just being able to invade a challenging system like a bank or military network. Hackers that do damage to a system by releasing viruses or altering, deleting, or taking information are known as active hackers they are, by far, the more dangerous of the two.

The easiest way to protect a system is with a good password. Using powerful password is an efficient way to strengthen the security of a system. Long and unusual passwords are harder for hackers to correctly guess. For even greater security, some online services now use “password-plus” systems. In this case, users first put in a password and then put in a second code that changes after the user accesses the site. Users have special cards or devices that show them the new code to use the next time. So if a hacker steals the password, they won't have the code. Or if the hacker somehow gets the code, they still don't know the password.

Florence Chadwick was born in California in 1918. She grew up on the beach and began peting as a swimmer at the age of six, when her uncle entered her in a race. For the next 19 years, she continued as a petitive swimmer.

On July 4,1952, at the age of 34, Chadwick attempted to bee the first woman to swim 21 miles across the Catalina Channel, from a port on the California coast. That day the ocean was ice cold, the fog was so thick that she could hardly see the support boats that followed her, and sharks swam around her. Several times, her support crew used guns to drive away the sharks. While Americans watched on televisions, her mother and her trainer, who were in one of the support boats, encouraged her to keep going. However, after 15 hours and 55 minutes, with only a half mile to go, she felt that she couldn't go on, and begged to be taken out of the water.

Later,Chadwick told a reporter, “Look, I'm not excusing myself, but if I had seen land I know, I could have made it.” The fog had made her unable to see her swimming goal, and it made her feel she was getting nowhere. Two months later, she tried again. Although the fog was still heavy, yet this time she made it with the goal rooted in her mind. She knew behind the fog was the land she pursued.

高考英语一轮阅读理解训练题_5

云南省曲靖市2014高考英语(阅读理解)一轮训练题(6)及答案阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项. A Here's a familiar version of the boy-meets-girl situation. A young man has at last plucked up courage to invite a dazzling young lady out to dinner. She has accepted his invitation and he is overjoyed. He is determined to take her to the best restaurant in town, even if it means that he will have to live on memories and hopes during the month to come. When they get to the restaurant, he discovers that this beautiful creature is on a diet. She mustn’t eat this and she mustn't drink that. Oh, but of course, she doesn't want to spoil his enjoyment. Let him by all means eat as much fattening food as he wants: it’s the surest way to an early grave. They spend a truly memorable evening together and never see each other again. What a miserable lot dieters are! You can always recognize them from the sour expression on their faces. They spend most of their time turning their noses up at food. They are forever consulting calorie charts; gazing at themselves in mirrors; and leaping on to weighing-machines in the bathroom. They spend a lifetime fighting a losing battle against spreading hips, bigger tummies(肚子) and double chins. Some declare all-out war on FAT. Mere dieting is not enough. They exhaust themselves doing exercises, sweating in sauna baths, being massaged by weird machines. The really wealthy pay vast sums for “health cures”. For two weeks they can enter a nature clinic and be starved to death for a hundred dollars a week. Don’t think it’s o nly the middle-aged who go in for these fashions either. Many of these bright young things you see are living on nothing but air, water and the goodwill of God. Dieters undertake to starve themselves of their own free will; so why are they so miserable? We ll, for one thing, they’re always hungry. You can't be hungry and happy at the same time. All the horrible foods they eat leave them permanently dissatisfied. “Wonderfood is a complete food”, the advertisement says. “Just dissolve(溶解) a teaspoonful in wate r…”. A complete food it may be, but not quite as complete as a juicy steak. And, of course, they’re always miserable because they

【2019-2020】高考英语一轮阅读理解巩固练(1)(含解析)) 李仕才 A If you want to slow aging, you might want to eat less. This finding is good news---if you were a mouse. The researchers studied mice, not people. John Price and other researchers studied two groups of mice. One group was able to eat as much as it wanted. The researchers limited what the mice in the other group ate. Their diet had 35 percent fewer calories than the first group of mice. Price says the mice with the diet restrictions were “more energetic and suffered few er disease.” They were not just living longer but seemed to stay younger for a longer period of time. The researchers found that fewer calories slow down a natural mechanism in cells called ribosomes. Price explains that ribosomes are responsible for making important proteins in the cells. But with fewer calories, they slow down. This gives the cells more time to repair themselves. The researchers say ribosomes use from 10 to 20 percent of the cell’s energy to make those proteins. Price wrote that “because of this, it is impractical to destroy an entire ribosome” when it starts to break down. However, “repairing individual parts of the ribosome on a regular basis enables ribosomes to continue producing high quality proteins for longer than they would otherwise. This top quality production, in turn, keeps cells and the entire body functioning well.” “Food,” he said, “isn’t just material to be burned---it’s a signal that tells our body and cells how to respond.” Price said the findings help to explain how exac tly our bodies age. And this may “help us make more educated decisions about what we eat.” 1.What can we know about the mice with limited calories from the study? A. They can keep healthy easily B. They need more energy to be active C. They can look younger than they are D. They will live a longer life like humans

(一) 【2016年沈阳市高中三年级教学质量监测(一)】阅读理解。阅读下面短文,选择最佳答案填空。 C In 2013 alone at least 20,000 African elephants were killed for their teeth. In South Africa over the last two years more than 2,200 rhinos were killed for their horns. These numbers are alarming, because current rates of illegal hunting are faster than birth rates, which could lead to extinction for these ecologically important creatures in their environment. Indeed, some elephant and rhino populations are on track to be locally extinct within the next decade. If you are reading this, you may already be aware of these facts. But you might not know that wildlife trafficking(走私) not only threatens the existence of elephants and rhinos but is also leading to extinction of other species, such as tigers, tortoises, sea turtles — and the world’s most trafficked mammal(哺乳动物)— pangolins.

2017高考英语一轮复习阅读理解100篇(8)

【2017高考阅读理解训练题】 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。 A I once met a well-known botanist at a dinner party. I had never talked with a botanist before, and I found him fascinating. I sat there absorbed and listened while he spoke of unusual plants and his experiments (he even told me astonishing facts about the simple potato). I had a small indoor garden of my own ---and he was good enough to tell me how to solve some of my problems. As I said, we were at a dinner party. There must have been a dozen other guests, but I broke an important rule of politeness. I ignored everyone else and talked for hours to the botanist. Midnight came, I said good night to everyone and departed. The botanist then turned to our host and said many nice things about me, including that I was a “most interesting conversationalist.” An interesting conversationalist? I had said hardly anything at all. I couldn’t have said anything if I had wanted to without changing the subject, for I didn’t know any more about plants than I knew about sharks. But I had done this one thing: I had listened carefully. I listened because I was really interested. And he felt it. Naturally that pleased him. That kind of listening is one of the the best ways to show respect to others, and it makes them feel great too. “Few human beings ,” wrote Jack Woodford in Strangers in Love,“can resist the sweet effect of rapt attention.” I went even further than that.I was “sincere in my admiration and generous in my praise.” I told him that I had been hugely entertained and instructed. I had. I told him I wished I had his knowledge.I told him that I should love to wander the fields with him. What’s more, it was all true. And so I had him thinking of me as a good conversationalist when, in reality, I had been merely a good listener and had encouraged him to talk. 26. From Paragraph 1, we can learn that the writer________. A. was deeply moved by the botanist’s talk B. was amazed by what he was hearing C. was not in a comfortable situation D. behaved politely and properly
