A

Oleksander Pylyshenko is either very fearless, very foolish… or both. The 40-year-old zookeeper from the Ukraine recently spent five weeks in a cage with Katya, a 200-kilo African lioness. Why? Well for a start, he wanted to raise awareness of the treatment of animals in captivity. Secondly, he hoped to break the Guinness World Record for time spent living in a cage with a lion. And thirdly? “I wanted to show my children what kind of man I am,” said Oleksander.

For 36 days, Oleksander and Katya shared the cage together. They ate hunks of meat thrown into the cage by Oleksande r’s wife, and slept side by side on a bed of hay. Oleksander did have a few more creature comforts than his feline flatmate – he built himself a shower and toilet inside

the enclosure. But he didn’t use any soap as the sharp scent is upsetting to lions.

And as if living with the king of the jungle wasn’t dangerous enough, Katya was also pregnant at the time. She gave birth during Oleksande r’s stay. Wild animals are very protective of their young but the zookeeper said Katya trusted him completely. Oleksande r’ wife, Olena, was also very trusting. “when he first told me about the plan I was very scared. But I decided to support my husband.”

Once the five weeks was up, Oleksander stepped out of the cage and declared the experiment a success. He told a Russian news agency, “Katya taught me a lot about honesty and kindness.” Also, a representative from Guinness World Records confirmed that Oleksander ahd beaten the previous record by three weeks.

But the parting was also bittersweet. “Katya was very sad to see me go,” Oleksander noted. Oleksande r’s wife, on the other hand, was very happy to have her husband back.【文章选自《海外英语》2012年1月的“Into the Lion’s Den”】

C. He put up a tent to protect himself from sun and rain.

September can be a depressing month. The summer holidays are over, it’s time to go back to

work or school and Christmas is four months away. However, for some people it’s the perfect time to get away.

These days more and more people are taking their holidays late in the year and for good reasons. Holidays in autumn can be cheaper, the resorts are less crowded and the weather isn’t as extreme as it is in the summer. So, where are the best places to go? Here are our top tips.

Sardinia(in Italy) has an average temperature of 27℃in September. It also has “Autunno in Barbagia” (Autumn in Barbagia) a series of festivals that take place in 27 villages in Barbagia, a mountainous region of inland Sardinia. The festivals continue from September to December, so there’s always something happening. There are street markets, craft workshops and there’s lots of eating and drinking (This is Italy, after all).

Dubrovnik Croatia has become very popular in summer but it’s quieter and more pleasant once the crowds have left. The weather is still warm but less humid. You can take a ferry to the popular beaches on the islands of Sunj and enjoy it with locals.

Dahab Egypt, is extremely hot in the summer with temperatures up to 38℃. However, the autumn is cooler while the sea is still warm. This makes Dahab the perfect place for snorkeling and windsurfing. There are also interesting historical sites to visit such as the Coloured Canyon, with its dramatic rock formations, and St Catherine’s Monastery, at the foot of Mount Sinai.

Kas is a relaxed fishing village on the Lycian coast in southern Turkey. There are plenty of things to do and the temperature has dropped (so you can actually enjoy doing them!) Kas is a good place to stay if you want to walk part of the Lycian way: a long-distance footpath that stretches for 500km from Fethiye to Antalya through the ancient land of Lycia. There are also watersports, of course. The best time to go diving is supposed to be after the first rains of autumn (usually between late September and early October) when the fish become most active.

Marrakech Morocco is another good destination. The city itself is a fascinating place to spend a few days. When you have had enough of that, go to Tigmi, a beautiful hill town about 20 kilometers away. There’s a hammam (a Turkish bath) and a large heated pool, which makes it the perfect place to relax.

Wherever you go this autumn – have fun!【文章选自《海外英语》2011年11月的“Autumn Sunshine”】

How many historic churches, pubs or buildings are there in your city? Are there worth preserving? Or are they just a waste of space? There are arguments for and against spending money on historic buildings.

Dangerous staircases. Uneven floors. A lack of IT infrastructure. The problem with many old buildings is that they’re… old – and extremely expensive to modernize. Take the case of the Combination Room in Cambridge University. It was built in 1347 and was initially used for lectures. Later, it became the Regent House – the university’s parliament. It’s of enormous historical value and cultural interest. However, it doesn’t meet accessibility standards for disabled people. As a result, a lift needs to be installed, but not everyone is happy about this. “Noting will persuade me that this lift would not in its effect, be a substantial alteration to the most precious room in the university. It would destroy the symmetry of that beautiful room,” said one user.

In general, modern buildings don’t have this type of problem. They can be built according to the latest environment standards, with draught proofing and insulation to help reduce carbon emission and save energy. They can also be made wheelchair accessible, and they can be designed to ensure maximum comfort and space. Anyone who’s been to a modern cinema, theatre or concert hall recently may understand the difference between the new buildings and older ones, which tend to have smaller seats, less space and poorer acoustics.

Very often, there’s money to be made by knocking down old building… especially if they’re

in city centers. So, the biggest threat to many historic buildings comes from developers. One of Croydon’s oldest pubs, The Rose and Crown, is a perfect example of this. A property development company has recently been granted permission to convert the 18th century building into flats, much to the disappointment of many local residents. “The bar is full of unique features and perfect examples of a traditional London pub. It really would be truly tragic for this Grade II listed

building to be turned into soulless flats,” said a spokesperson for English heritage.

So, are these buildings really worth preserving? “Traditional buildings such as churches, town halls, schools and hospitals give England its character,” the spokesman added. “This is about guaranteeing the future of the past. It’s about making the past part of our future. This is why we exist.”【文章选自《海外英语》2011年6月的“Building Bash”】

John “Mad Jack” Mytton (1796--1834) was a carefree English aristocrat who was born into

immense wealth. However, he died a poor man after a life that was once described as “a series of suicide attempts”. So, what went wrong?

As a young boy, Jack went to Westminster School, but after only one year he was expelled for fighting with a teacher. He was then sent to Harrow School but only lasted three days before he was also thrown out. He was eventually educated by private tutors.

After school, Jack went to Cambridge University. He arrived with 2,000 bottles of port, but left without graduating – he found university life boring. Later, he joined the army, enlisting with the 7th Hussars. As a young officer, he spent a year with the regiment in France as part of the occupation force after Napoleon’s defeat in 1815. Jack passed the time gambling and drinking before resigning his commission. At the age of 21, he returned to his country house just in time to receive his inheritance.

With an annual income of over £800,000 in today’s money, Jack was extremely rich… but it didn’t take him long to spend it all. In 1819, he became an MP. In order to secure his seat, he offered voters £10 notes to vote for him, spending more than £10,000 in total. However, he found politics dull and went to parliament only once. Back at home, he would often drop bank notes in the gardens of his estate, and gave his servants vast amounts of spending money. Once he lost his racetrack winnings (several thousand pounds) when the wind blew all the money away.

One of Jack’s favorite pastimes was hunting. He would go in any kind of weather, occasionally with no clothes on. Sometimes, he would get up in the middle of the night, take off with a gun to look for something to shoot.

Jack also kept a large number of pets. These included about 2,000 dogs. Some were fed on steak and Champagne and even wore livery. A favorite horse had free range inside Halston Hall and would often lie with Jack in front of the fire.

Jack was a bit of a practical joker, too. He once left a horse in the bedroom of a guest. Another visitor fell asleep and woke up to find a live bear and two bulldogs in his bed. In 1826, as a result of a bet, Jack rode his horse into the Bedford Hotel, up the grand staircase and onto the balcony. Then, still sitting on the horse, he jumped off the balcony, landing among the diners in the restaurant below.

Another time, he invited a local doctor to dine at Halston Hall. As soon as the doctor had left, Jack put on a highwayman’s costume and raced ahead to rob the unsuspecting man. On another occasion, a passenger in Jack’s carriage admitted that he’d never been in an accident, so Jack drove the carriage up a hill and turned it over. He would also slip red-hot coals into people’s pockets as a joke.

Eventually, Jack ran out of money and fell into debt. In 1830, he fled to France to avoid his

creditors(债主), but returned a couple of years later, ending up in prison in Southwark, London. Jack died there in 1834, a poor, lonely man. 【文章选自《海外英语》2011年9月的“Hell Raiser”】

One possible student version:

With the rapid development of science and technology, more and more monitoring equipment has come into campus. Recently, our class has had a discussion on whether it’s necessary for schools to install monitoring equipment in campus. Opinions vary from person to person.

Many students think it’s necessary to install monitoring equipment. Monitors can provide teachers with the latest campus circumstances so as to help them deal with the problems immediately in case of emergency. Furthermore, monitors play an important part in recording the unusual cases, which will become the evidence of disorder and crime.

However, some students are against the installation. They fear that their privacy will be offended and exposed to the public. Besides, too much of the equipment is a waste of money, as most of the record will be of no use at all.

As far as I’m concerned, we should take an open mind to monitors as long as we make proper use of them. In a word, monitors can ensure us the campus safety and create a harmonious environment for us students.

A For the business traveler who's all about efficiency: check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum trouble. When you're pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process. ◆Marriott Detroit Airport Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I've tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in”virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk. ◆Hyatt Regency Minneapolis I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. The kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about 3 minutes. When I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out: An agent meets you in the lobby with, an iPad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line. ◆Radisson LaCrosse The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. At a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a bar code by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you can scan the bar code to get your key without any other steps required. It's super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well. 1.What does the word ‘infuriate', in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A.annoy B.remind C.amuse D.impress

His name was Alfred Nobel. He was a great scientist and inventor himself. Besides, he had a big business. His business may surprise you. He made and sold explosives. His companies even made and sold weapons. Isn’t this something that surprises you? The man who made money from weapons should set up the Peace Prize? Though Alfred Nobel had a lot of money from weapons, he hated war. He hoped that there would be no war in the world. He was one of the richest in Europe. When he died in 1896, he left behind him a lot of money and his famous will. According to his will, most of his money was placed in a fund. He wanted the interest from the fund to be used as prizes every year. We know them as the Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prizes are international. Alfred Nobel wanted the winners to be chosen for their work, not the country they came from. Alfred Nobel had given his whole life to his studies and work and to the benefits of mankind. He made money all by his own efforts, but he left the world share his wealth. His inventions and wealth stay with the world for ever. 1.Nobel wanted to set up the Nobel Peace Prize because _____. Nobel set up his company to sell clothes. B. Mostof Nobel’s money was used for the world Wars. C. Nobel Prizes are only for some people from some special countries. D. Nobel worked hard in his life and saved lots of money for the world to share. B When we can see well, we do not think about our eyes very often. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are. People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.

Body language is the quiet, secret and most powerful language of all! It speaks 36 than words. According to specialists, our bodies send out more 37 than we realize. In fact, non-verbal(非语言)communication takes up about 50% of what we really 38 . And body language is particularly 39 when we attempt to communicate across cultures. Indeed, what is called body language is so 40 a part of us that it's actually often unnoticed. And misunderstandings occur as a result of it. 41 , different societies treat the 42 between people differently. Northern Europeans usually do not like having 43 contact(接触)even with friends, and certainly not with 44 . People from Latin American countries 45 touch each other quite a lot. Therefore, it's possible that in 46 , it may look like a Latino is 47 a Norwegian all over the room. The Latino, trying to express friendship, will keep moving 48 . The Norwegian, very probably seeing this as pushiness, will keep 49 - which the Latino will in return regard as 50 . Clearly, a great deal is going on when people 51 . And only a part of it is in the words themselves. And when parties are from 52 cultures, there's a strong possibility of 53 . But whatever the situation, the best 54 is to obey the Golden Rule: treat others as you would like to be 55 .

2019年浙江省温州市高考英语模拟试卷(2月份) 一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分) A ‘Turtle time!,loudly called out by one of my newly-found friends, meant the beginning of either a morning or afternoon shift at Turtle Camp in Nusa Penida,Indonesia.Upon arrival at the project each day,we would look eagerly for our names on the whiteboard to see which task we would be undertaking.Would it be the highly desirable ‘turtle feeding',the pretty fun ‘tank cleaning',the exciting ‘medicine administering' or the less appealing ‘fish cutting'?Fine in theory but not when every fly in Indonesia decides to crowd onto these dead fish while you're cutting! Life at the turtle project was fun because twice a day we got to hang out with sea turtles.By ‘hang out',I obviously meant ‘work',as we were on shift, but it certainly didn't feel like work.Another fun thing was getting to know the other volunteers! With volunteers from all over the world,it was just common to hear Finnish being spoken,Australian slang mixed with French expressions and Swedes making plans to visit newly-found friends in the USA.Of course, not all the time at Turtle Camp was consumed by volunteering.Scheduled activities included a trip to Crystal Bay,a beautiful paradise for swimming and sunbathing,an awesome beach bonfire complete with a beautiful sunset as well as our local coworkers showing off their guitar playing and singing skills. Our time at Turtle Camp was capped off by setting free two of our turtles into the sea to begin their journey as independent turtles! Hopefully, the love and care provided at the turtle project would ensure that these turtles had a greater chance of survival in the big, wide and scary ocean. 1.Which task is less fun to the volunteers at Turtle Camp?______ A. Turtle feeding. B. Tank cleaning. C. Medicine Administering. D. Fish Cutting. 2.What does the underlined sentence imply?______ A. The volunteering was a challenge. B. The time at the camp was difficult. C. The work at the project was a delight. D. Communication was time-consuming. 3.When setting free the two turtles, the volunteers felt a sense of ______ . A. achievement B. belonging C. loss D. independence B If you're looking at livable cities as inspiration for your holiday, you'll miss out on many great tourist destinations.According to Mercer's 2018 Quality of Living Survey,Moscow ranks 167 and Beijing only 119,yet both provide ample visitor pleasures.Meanwhile high-ranked cities such as Kobe (神户)or Seattle may be easy places to live in,but offer only passing interest to tourists. In truth, many of the world's most livable cities are a little dull. The world isn't rushing to visit Canberra or Montreal. In fact, none of the world's 10 most visited cities appear in Mercer's top 20.Clearly,considerations that create enjoyable holiday destinations differ from those that make cities fine places to live in. This should be no surprise, since livability lists aren't concerned with tourists or even local residents but rather expats(侨民).Mercer, for example,is a British-based professional service firm whose lists supply multinationals with human resources information about where to locate their businesses."The success of foreign business is influenced by issues such as ease of travel and communication, personal safety, and access to public services, says Slagin Parakatil, who oversees Mercer's research. In short,Mercer considers whether cities are attractive to business and investment, and have good schools, hospitals and housing while such factors seldom influence tourists. Still,Mercer's Quality of Living Survey has its uses for tourists, since it also looks at natural and cultural environments and recreation. It ranks public transport and infrastructure(基础设施)particularly highly,a consideration shared by the World Economic Forum in reports on tourism and travel competitiveness. This includes hotels,rental-cars and even ATM availability, all of which make a destination friendly to expats and visitors alike. 4.What do we know about livable cities?______ A. They hardly offer tourist passing interest. B. They may not be good tourist destinations. C. They can arouse the inspiration of visitors. D. They are usually highly ranked by tourists. 5.What is Mercer more concerned about when ranking livable cities?______ A. Tourist attractions. B. ATM availability. C. Business-friendliness. D. Local residents. 6.Why does the writer use Mercer's Quality of Living Survey?______ A. To make his view convincing. B. To compare those livable cities. C. To better understand the survey. D. To support the British-based firm. C Every day around the world, thousands of people with little to no scholarly training in art history walk into museums. They may or may not read notice boards that share relevant information of the artworks or artists.Imagine, before being permitted to direct their eyeballs to the art on the walls, museum visitors were required to read a 15- or 20-page introduction to each piece or each artist. How many people would go to museums if that were the case? Yet this seems to be the expectation when it comes to reading classic literature.Classic novels typically come with 15- or 20-page introductions, which often include spoilers, assuming that readers do not come to classic books to discover,be absorbed in,and be surprised by the story world. Also, apparently,we mustn't read classics alone, without experts guiding our experiences. However, classic literature is in a unique position to show us that we're not alone in our pains and joys.By taking us out of our time, classic books free us to see beyond the set of beliefs we stick to and to connect human experiences that remain alive across time and place. What could be more grounding, more comforting, than seeing ourselves in the battles, longings, and pleasures that have played out across hundreds, thousands of years of human history? Our personal engagement is the first step of a longer journey of discovery that deepens our knowledge and understanding of ourselves and our world. We may,for example, feel for Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter though we despair of the world she lived in. While we're letting go of things, let's stop worrying about understanding everything. We can't.It will be fun if we embrace curiosity, the pleasure of working out a mystery, and our common relationships as humans. We can feel, for example, the power of self-sacrifice in Charles Dickens'A Tale of Two Cities even when we lack full understanding of the cultural references and language. 7.Most museum goers ______ . A. enjoy reading notice boards B. understand the artworks well C. lack professional art knowledge D. share common interest in artworks 8.What can the spoilers in Para.2 possibly be ?______ A. Story writers. B. Readers' expectations. C. Guiding experts. D. Plots given away in advance. 9.What prevents readers enjoying reading classics?______ A. Showing curiosity about the writers. B. Letting go of things.
