1.What do you often do during your holidays?

In the summer holiday, I am in a company called Jing Tianwei for one-month internship, It is a railway IT company and I worked in hardware tecnology sector, I was responsible for finding the trouble charts of trains, my work is simple, but it requests careful and patient attitudes which is just my characteristics, I learned a lot Things in the company, in particular, the head of department taught me not only some skills at work, but also taught me how to interact with others and how to solve some difficult problems, I would like to thank my friends in the companies for their help.

2. With whom do you prefer to spend your holiday, your parents or your friends? why?

I prefer to spend my holiday with my parents.

Because most of us are studying far away from home, we will meet our parents twice or only once in a year, as their children ,they miss us and we miss them, holiday is a good chance for us to have a reunion, to have a dinner or have a party together, usually we talk about some interesting things happened, it is a happy time for my family, and we enjoy the moment. I will choose to meet my friends when we are in schools, though we are in different places, we can choose a place to travel together during a short holiday. If we don’t have many classes, my friends will come to my school ,and we meet each other.

3.What festival do you like best? Why?

Spring Festival.

Three reasons.

First, Spring festival is normal, we celebrate it once a year. But, it's abno rmal because it’s unique festival by Chinese.

Second, Spring Festival is the most solemn and folk traditional festival, which represented to bid farewell to the end of the old year and welcome in the new year.

Finally, we have a family reunion during the holiday. Usually, this is the only chance for family members to meet. And this is the most important reason why I like Spring Festival best.

4.How do you spend that festival?

I'd like to say how we celebrating this festival traditionally. The festival atmosphere getting stronger and stronger during the last lunar month before the Spring Festival Eve, people do Spring Festival shopping to prepare all the stuffs that they’re going to eat and use for celebration and the several days after the eve. That’s a bi g holiday for kids, they wear new clothes; they get red packets from parents and eldership; we fire fireworks, every kid has the experience that expecting the Spring Festival for the year. For family, relatives meets each other at this time, have family reunion dinner is the mainly activity. Valentines Day, (February 14)

Lovers and spouses buy flowers, candy and gifts for their sweethearts. Many couples go to restaurants for intimate dinners. All stores and businesses are open.

6.Talk about one holiday you are familiar with: its origin, the way of celebrating it etc.

Spring Festival

Origin: Its origin is too old to be traced. Several explanations are hanging around. All agree, however, that the word Nian, which in modern Chinese solely means "year", was originally the name of a monster beast that started to prey on people the night before the beginning of a new year.

One legend goes that the beast Nian had a very big mouth that would swallow a great many people with one bite. People were very scared. One day, an old man came to their rescue, offering to subdue Nian. To Nian he said, "I hear that you are very capable, but can you swallow the other beasts of prey on earth instead of people who are by no means of your worthy opponents?" So, it did swallow many of the beasts and also harassed people and their domestic animals from time to time.

After that, the old man disappeared riding the beast Nian. He turned out to be an immortal god. Before the old man left, he had told people to put up red paper decorations on their windows and doors at each year's end to scare away Nian in case it sneaked back again, because red is the color the beast feared the most.

From then on, the tradition of observing the conquest of Nian is carried on from generation to generation. The term "Guo Nian", which may mean "Survive the Nian" becomes today "Celebrate the (New) Year" as the word "guo" in Chinese having both the meaning of "pass-over" and "observe". The custom of putting up red paper and firing

fire-crackers to scare away Nian . However, people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the excitement of the celebration.

Celebration:

The seven days before New Year's Eve are set aside for the annual housecleaning, Every corner of the house has to be cleaned for the new year.colorful New Year pictures are placed on the walls, and people place doublets on their doors. people do Spring Festival shopping to prepare all the stuffs that they’re going to eat and use for celebration and the several days after the eve. Recently, many people choose travel during the Spring Festival vacation; they get relaxation both from travel itself and the festival atmosphere. Anyway, this traditional festival for Chinese is getting more and more worldwide and updated.

Christmas:

Origin:

Christmas is primarily a Christian religious holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus. It always falls on the 25th of December, but the holiday season actually begins weeks earlier.

According to the Bible, the holy book of Christians, God decided to allow his only son, Jesus Christ, to be born to a human mother and live on the earth so that people could understand God better and learn to love God and each other more. "Christmas" means "celebration of Christ "- which honors the time when Jesus was born to a young Jewish woman Mary.

Mary was engaged to be married to Joseph,a carpenter, but before they came together, she was found to be with child. Because Joseph, her husband, was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace,he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this,an angel of the Lord appeared to him in his dream and said,"Do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son,and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."

the exact date of the birth of Jesus nearly 2,000 years ago is not known, For the first 300 years,Jesus' birthday was celebrated on different dates. Finally,in the year 354 A.D.church leaders chose December 25 as his birthday.

Celebration:

?From the beginning of December, people begin shopping for gifts to give to their children and other family members. They attend holiday parties at their offices, at

friend's homes or at restaurants throughout December. Many families decorate their

homes and yards with multicolored sparkling lights.

?Most families erect small evergreen trees in their homes and decorate them with colored lights and glittering ornaments. On Christmas morning, children awaken to

find brightly wrapped gifts under the Christmas tree. Christmas day is an intimate

family holiday. Children and grand children all return home for an annual Christmas

dinner and exchange of gifts. Close friends, relatives and neighbors often visit each

other on Christmas evening. Nearly all businesses, tourist attractions and shopping

centers are closed on Christmas. A few restaurants, bars, gasoline stations and

convenience stores will remain open.

?Western Festivals:

?the St. Valentine’s Day (February 14th)

?th e April Fool’s Day (April 1st)

?the Easter (A Sunday between March 22 and April 25)

?the Halloween (October 31st)

?the Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday in November)

?the Christmas Eve (December 24th)

?the Christmas Day

?the New Year’s Day

New Years Day (January 1) is a quiet day for recovery from the celebration of the previous evening. Activities usually include sleeping late and watching football

games on the television. Some folks have dinner parties for their family or invited guests. Most businesses and shops will be closed. Some restaurants, bars and even a few shopping centers may be open.

Easter is primarily a Christian holy day commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is celebrated on a Sunday in early spring. Most activities are church or family oriented and usually includes a gathering of the family for a dinner feast. Children often search for colored eggs that the Easter Bunny has hidden in their yard. Businesses are little affected since this holiday is always on a Sunday. Most restaurants, gasoline stations and convenience stores remain open but some shopping centers will close or open only for abbreviated hours.

?Halloween is celebrated on the 31st day of October. This "hallowed evening"

preceding the ancient church holiday of All Saints Day, was superstitiously

believed to be a time when the souls of the deceased would return to earth to

roam about. Today it is a festive occasion in the USA. Some people decorate

their homes and yards with images of ghosts, goblins, witches, skeletons and

Jack o' lanterns. (Hollowed out pumpkins carved into scary faces and

illuminated by small internal candles) In the evening, small children dress in

costumes and visit houses in their neighborhoods collecting sweets. Many towns and cities have costumed Halloween parades. The most elaborate and outlandish Halloween parades are held at Greenwich Village in New York City and in San

Francisco, California. All businesses and stores are open for normal business

hours on this holiday.

3. If you could create a new holiday, what person or event would it honor? Give the reasons. And in what way would you want people to celebrate it?

If I could create a new holiday, I would like to honor someone who has significantly changed our lives. That person would be Bill Gates. The name of the holiday woul d be “Bill Gates Day.”

?Bill Gates made computer operating system user-friendly, thereby opening the door to hundreds of millions of untrained users. Before Bill invented windows, we had to

learn how to speak the computer’s command language before we could operate it. It

was a rather complicated job. Now, a computer is so easy to operate that even a child can use one.

?Before we had Windows, computer could only use the programs created by the manufacturer of that computer. There were very few good programs available and

most of them were written only for the very expensive brands. Now, with Windows,

we can buy an incredible variety of great software programs for as little as $5 and

they will run on any Windows computer.

?The way I would want people to celebrate “Bill Gates Day” would be to turn off their computers and stop using computers for 24 hours. It would be a wonderful way to

experience what life used to be like before we had computers and it might also

remind us of how dependent we are on computers today.

Unit 2

1.The Seven Wonders

亚历山大灯塔The Lighthouse at Alexandria was built in 279 B.C. on the small island of Pharos by Sostratus of Cnidus for Ptolemy II. The lighthouse was over 400 feet high. As the symbol of America, the statue of liberty is located on a small island named Freedom Island of the west of Mahanton, New York. In 1984, the statue of liberty was put down on the list of the world’s relics.

Liberty Enlightening the World, known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty, is a statue given to the United States by France in 1885, standing at Liberty Island in the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans. The copper statue, dedicated on October 28, 1886, commemorates the centennial of the United States and is a gesture of friendship between the two nations. The sculptor was Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, engineered the internal structure. Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was responsible for the choice of copper in the statue's construction and adoption of the Repoussé technique.

The statue depicts a woman, standing upright, dressed in a flowing robe and a spiked crown,

holding a stone tablet close to her body in her left hand and a flaming torch high in her right hand. The statue is made of verdigris copper with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf. It stands atop a rectangular stonework pedestal, itself on an irregular eleven-pointed star foundation.

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most recognizable icons of the U.S. worldwide and, in a more general sense, represents liberty and escape from oppression. The Statue of Liberty was, from 1886 until the Jet age, often the first glimpse of the United States for millions of immigrants after ocean voyages from Europe.

The construction continued over 10 years. The Great Wall undertook 18 major repairs and extensions over 200 years during the Ming Dynasty. It runs 6, 700 kilometers from Jiayuguan Pass to Gansu Province in the west to Shanhaiguan Pass in Hebei Province in the east over six provinces and Beijing and passes through high mountains, broad grasslands and immense deserts. Unit 3 education

1.Have you ever taken a part-time jobs?

2.What kind of job do you do? And ho w much do you earn for an hour’s work?

3. Have you ever taken a part-time jobs?

A:Students should take part-time jobs.Because:

① Part-time jobs can help students cultivate their independence.

② Earning money from part-time jobs is necessary because tuition fees, the price of

books and the cost of living are soaring. It can relieve the economic burden of students’parents.

③ Working while studying provides useful work experience and teaches students

time-management skills.

④ Part-time jobs can prepare students for their future and enable them to learn how to

handle various unexpected crises at the same time.

⑤ Part-time jobs can help students put their knowledge into practice.

⑥ Working while studying teaches students earning money is not easy and helps them

to develop thrifty habits.

⑦ Earning money from part-time jobs give students a feeling that they have grown up.

B: Students should not take part-time jobs. Because:

① It is hard for students to perform well academically when they are working and

studying at the same time.

② Part-time jobs often distract students’ attention from their studies.

③ Students’ main goal is to study and learn what is needed for their future. Social

experience can be gained after graduation.

④ Their future jobs are not always related to what they are studying at the university.

4. Do you think we should encourage campus love? Why or why not? Give one or

two cases to illustrate your point.

A: We should encourage campus love. Because:

① College students are at the right age. They have a mental and physical need and

interest to know the opposite sex.

② Dating on campus can make student become mature earlier, because they have to

learn how to cooperate with others and how to care about others.

③ Love on campus is the purest of all love and you won’t really enjoy the true love you

are in the society.

B: We should not encourage campus love. Because:

① Campus date will distract student’s attention from academic studies if they could not

handle it appropriately.

② Most students are not psychologically mature enough. Failure in love could result in

mental hurt to them.

③ The rate of successful campus is very low. Most couples in college end their love

story before or upon graduation. College students are not mature to separate love and passion.

5. If your child had a boyfriend /girlfriend at college, what would you do or say to your child?

6. Do you enjoy your graduate life? Are there any differences between your college

life and the life as a graduate student?

① Compared with traditional lectures, seminars may have their weaknesses. Without

the teacher’s instructions, some students may feel at a loss at first, not knowing what to read or what to recite.

② They may well waste much time reading irrelevant books, or doing senseless things.

③ Seminars urge students to do a lot of reading beforehand in order to get prepared for

the discussion in class. So they have to think independently, spot the questions, then

either raise the questio ns to the teacher or, with the teacher’s help, find the answers by themselves.

④Students don’t have to learn the rules and formulas by rote. Instead, they have to learn

to develop their analytical skills, which are of great importance in their future research and work.

7. Will you find a job or go for further study after you’ve graduated from this

university? And what are the reasons?

8. Nowadays there is a growing concern over the fact that many colleges and

universities are overcrowded with students, resulting from the enlarged enrollment since 1998. What do you think of this phenomenon? Do you think there will be many problems caused by enlarged enrollment?

① The immediate result of the enlarged enrollment has produced is the overcrowded dormitories and dining halls.

② The teaching quality can not be ensured because so many students have to share the limited teaching facilities.

③ We are now facing a more severe competition in the job market because of the enlarged enrollment.

9. What will the future school be like?

10. What courses are useful for one’s job? Why?

Unit 4

1.Please name the major transportation tools through history.

① Ships Through History

② Air Transportation Through History

③ Horse Transportation Through History

④ Cars Through History

⑤ Bicycling Through History

2.What are the advantages and disadvantages of traveling by

air/ship/train/car/bicycle?

3.List the reasons for traffic jam in big cities like Beijing ,and work out possible

solutions.

① Traffic is one of the essential activities for any big metropolis. Each day,

passengers travel by car, train or plane to and from every corner of the cities; heavy loads of goods are transported inside and outside. With the modernization in full

swing, traffic has been making greater impact on the life of the cities. What a mess the cities would be in, if the arteries of such vital importance were out of action, even for a minute!

② Owing to the major role it plays, traffic has long been a matter of serious concern

for many municipal governments. In the past decade, new bus routes have been

opened to traffic and a lot more vehicles put into service, many highways,

flying-bridges as well as underground subways have been built to ease out the

“bottlenecks”. Meanwhile, new traffic projects are under consideration.

③ For all these efforts, traffic in big cities like Beijing and Guangzhou still remains

one of the biggest headaches. Traffic jams during rush hours, bus delays, and frays are a way of life with people in the big cities. In addition, traffic accidents occur with alarming frequency, resulting in heavy losses in both state property and lives. It is high time that traffic problems were given top priority on government agendas if China wants to catch up with developed countries.

4. Do you think it is necessary for every one to obey the traffic rules? Discuss it with your partner.

5. Have you ever been in a dangerous traffic accident or just had a narrow escape of it? Describe it to your partner.

6.Have a discussion on traffic safety with your partner.

7.Brainstorm:What are also factors in many accidents?

① Now more and more families own cars, and they like traveling in their cars. My

family will have a trip next week, we should take care when driving or riding in a car. Can you tell me other traffic rules?

② Always wear your seat belt.

③Keep a safe distance/spread out…..

Unit 5 Computer

1.List changes caused by computers

https://www.sodocs.net/doc/023816579.html,puter: Blessing or Curse?

(1).Blessing:Looking back on the past 20th century, we human beings have every reason

to take pride in all those great achievements. We have conquered many diseases, launched satellites, invented mobile phones... However, the advent of computer, together with the internet, is considered the most significant and has caused a thorough revolution in

people's lives.

When the first computer came into being in 1946, it was proclaimed the beginning of

a new era in human history. The marvelous invention coupled with Internet plays a vital

role in today's society.

Nowadays, businessmen depend substantially on computers. In the database of the banks, the information of thousands of millions of accounts is stored accurately. The B2B system of the Ford Car Company controlled completely by computers, makes it possible for the whole company to coordinate efficiently, thus it keeps the costs to the lowest level.

Stock transactions involving large sums of money can be completed safely through

internet. We can hardly imagine a business operating without computers.

When it comes to our daily life, computers also demonstrate their

advantages. "distance learning" is becoming increasingly popular, by which teachers and students interact online while sitting before the PC at home. And there's even possibility that it will take the place of the old way of teaching someday in the future.

Besides, we can have easy access to the flowing information when necessary by clicking the mouse only. In the past, bowerer, we have to search for hours in libraries. PC games provide extra fun for our relaxation. Emails facilitate communication between

friends separated by long distance.

(2).Curse:While everyone says the 21st century is an information age,we should also take

notice of its negative side. Not all the changes brought to us are positive.

I can still clearly remember the problem before the millenium that caused global panic.

It gave out the warning that people had relied too much on computers. Once the system is ruined, it may give rise to collapse of the whole society. Moreover, hackers attempt to destroy certain systems or make profits by stealing critical data; virus of different kinds are continually produced and spread on the net. All these threaten our society. As to

individuals, spending much time on computer keeps one from communication with other people. Students addicted to PC games are distracted from learning.

In sum, it's no easy thing to define exactly whether the advent of computer is a blessing or a curse. As far as I'm concerned, despite the negative effects it brings about,

the computer has improved our life and benefited us on the whole. It's a great invention of the 20th century.

3.Shopping on the Internet

① With the development of the Internet and the popularization of computers, shopping on the internet has become a commonplace in our life. Here consumers can buy almost everything they need.

② Shopping on the Internet has a lot of advantages. Of which the most important is perhaps its convenience. People don't have to waste a lot of their energy and precious time to go from one shop to another to choose the commodities they like. This is especially desirable to the old, the sick and the busy people who cannot go to the shops in person. The goods come in all shapes, sizes and colours on the Internet. All they need to do is to sit in front of their computers and click the mouse. The commodities they order will be delivered to them promptly.

③ However, shopping on the Internet also has its disadvantages. The first disadvantage is that the consumers can' t see the goods or try them on personally. Sometimes, the real goods may not be the same as what they have seen on the computer. The second disadvantage is that some shops on the Internet are not registered. They will never deliver anything to you after they get the money from you. Once cheated, you will find that you have nowhere to go to complain.

4.In-store shopping vs. online shopping

I. Advantages of Online Shopping

① In a fast paced society, time saved by searching, comparing, and buying online versus hitting the streets and browsing the traditional stores is immeasurable.

② Almost any item a consumer can imagine is available when the shops of the globe are as close as a computer terminal.

③ With a few keystrokes, prices on one retail web site can be compared with the sale prices on another. When you shop at brick and mortar stores, you have to manually compare prices in ads, or rely on tips from friends about good deals.

④ Shopping online eliminates the hassle of browsing and deciding at absolutely ground zero on the spot.

⑤ Shoppers are able to get lower prices when buying online because online stores are not burdened by the costs of running a physical store, such as the rent of the physical premises and operating costs such as the wages of sales staff.

⑥It is convenient. You don’t have to get dressed, get in your car, drive through the traff ic, and struggle to find a parking place to get to a brick and mortar store that may or may not

have the item you want. Instead, you can sit in comfortably in your own home, in your robe and furry slippers, purchase the item you need online and arrange for overnight delivery.

II. Disadvantages of Online Shopping

① You do NOT see the item in person, but only a picture.

② You can not have a close quality examination on the goods.

③ You will not be able to try the merchandise on (especially clothing).

④ While the Internet can give you more information about a product than you'd get in a store, sometimes that information just isn't enough. For example, I can read that the new perfume is a combination of gardenia, freesia and sandalwood with a delicate top note of vanilla, but nothing can substitute

for actually smelling the fragrance.

⑤ Online shopping lacks touch and feel of merchandise and lacks personal attention from a salesman. The convenience of online shopping has reduced the shopping experience to a browse and click mode, no mood and very little atmosphere.

⑥It’s hard to know whether a company is trustworthy. There are more chances to encounter fraud (e.g. disappearance of shopping site).

⑦ You could pay for goods that never arrive. You can retrieve a slow loading site and can even get kicked off the computer.

⑧You don’t know what would happen to the personal information you provide before you buy.

⑨ There are more chances for mistakes in ordering the wrong item.

4. Tips for online shopping

① You can reduce the risks of online shopping by checking an online shop’s terms and conditions, privacy policy, complaints procedures, and whether or not it has a secure checkout.

② You can reduce the risks of online shopping by checking an online sh op’s terms and conditions, privacy policy, complaints procedures, and whether or not it has a secure checkout.

③ Always make sure that you shop only at secure sites and with reputable companies.

④ Always print a copy of all your purchase orders and confirmation numbers. If the company sends an e-mail confirmation of your transaction, be sure to read the fine print on the e-mail.

⑤ Promptly check your monthly bank and credit card statements. Reconcile these statements with the records of your transactions to make sure that any billing errors or unauthorized purchases are reported within the required timeframe.
