Unit Five

Reading and understanding

4 Answer the questions.

1 Why does Cathy ask if Nelly is alone?

Because Cathy wants to talk to Nelly in private about a secret (Edgar’s proposal of marriage).

2 Why does Cathy want to know where Heathcliff is?

Because Cathy wants to make sure that she is alone with Nelly. She wants to talk about Edgar and Heathcliff, so she wouldn’t want either of them to hear the conversation.

3 What news does Cathy give Nelly?

Cathy tells Nelly that Edgar has proposed to her and she has accepted him.

4 What does she want Nelly to tell her?

She wants Nelly to say whether she should have accepted or refused Edgar’s proposal.

5 What does Nelly think is the most important thing in a marriage?

Love, so she asks whether Cathy loves Edgar as the first consideration.

6 What happens in Cathy’s dream?

She goes to heaven, but is broken-hearted to be away from home. The angels send her back home where she sobs for joy. It seems for Cathy this means she will be unhappy with Edgar. She has “no more business” to marry him than to be in heaven, where, in the dream, she is unhappy.

7 What does Cathy say about Heathcliff?

She loves him and feels that they have the same soul, but it would degrade her to marry him. (He was found homeless on the street, so he had a poor social background.)

6 How does Cathy feel about Edgar?

Cathy thinks she and Edgar have different souls, “as different as a moonbeam from lightning, or frost from fire”.

Reading across cultures

Think of the last time you boug ht clothes. You probably noticed the variety of colors, patterns, fabrics and brands you could choo se from. Which kind of soft drink would you like to have today or what kind of computer do you want? Advertisers are skilled in the art of making their products look the best to appeal to our se nses. But products aren't always what they seem. Sometimes advertising is deceptive and as cons umers ,we must be careful about what we choose to buy. It is important to learn to compare prod ucts and identify our purpose in purchasing the things we need. But the good thing about advertising is that it helps people to make decisions and refine thei r choices. In the United States, the Ad Council creates timely public service messages to the nation. Th eir purpose is to raise awareness of public problems that citizens can respond to. Inspiring ads ca use individuals to take action and even save lives. Unit 1 The Way to Success 课文A Never, ever give up! As a young boy, Britain's great Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, attended a public school called Harrow. He was not a good student, and had he not been from a famous family, he probably would have been removed from the school for deviating from the rules. Thankfully, he did finish at Harrow and his errors there did not preclude him from going on to the university. He eventually had a premier army career whereby he was later elected prime minister. He achieved fame for his wit, wisdom, civic duty, and abundant courage in his refusal to surrender during the miserable dark days of World War II. His amazing determination helped motivate his entire nation and was an inspiration worldwide. Toward the end of his period as prime minister, he was invited to address the patriotic young boys at his old school, Harrow. The headmaster said, "Young gentlemen, the greatest speaker of our time, will be here in a few days to address you, and you should obey whatever sound advice he may give you." The great day arrived. Sir Winston stood up, all five feet, five inches and 107 kilos of him, and gave this short, clear-cut speech: "Young men, never give up. Never give up! Never give up! Never, never, never, never!" Personal history, educational opportunity, individual dilemmas - none of these can inhibit a strong spirit committed to success. No task is too hard. No amount of preparation is too long or too difficult. Take the example of two of the most scholarly scientists of our age, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. Both faced immense obstacles and extreme criticism. Both were called "slow to learn" and written off as idiots by their teachers. Thomas Edison ran away from school because his teacher whipped him repeatedly for asking too many questions. Einstein didn't speak fluently until he was almost nine years old and was such a poor student that some thought he was unable to learn. Yet both boys' parents believed in them. They worked intensely each day with their sons, and the boys learned to never bypass the long hours of hard work that they needed to succeed. In the end, both Einstein and Edison overcame their childhood persecution and went on to achieve magnificent discoveries that benefit the entire world today. Consider also the heroic example of Abraham Lincoln, who faced substantial hardships,
