What makes a good school?

I'm a parent of two elementary students. The experience that my children are going through now in the elementary school is so different from mine when I was at their age. What I think of a good school is communication between teachers.students and parents. 1 Parent-teacher communication guarantees that a child is educated in the same way and in turn a child will build special bonds in communication between their teachers and parents.

2 My children return home telling me that their teachers ignore their questions when they raise their hands and don’t talk much.On the other hand,I feel the same when I write notes to school.

3 This is telling me there is a lack in communication from the school teachers nowadays as their life is so overwhelmed by the over-crowded schools we have in the US.

However.choosing a career in education is not just for a good job.A teacher should really have heart in touching every child’s life. 4 Even now,I still remember all my elementary school teachers’names. 5 The answer lies in the fact that they spent every minute of their precious time helping me and answering all my questions with patience. When you have teachers who are willing to spend time for any child and communicate with parents,it is what I consider a GREAT school for a child to attend, not just GOOD.

A.I don’t get any response from the teachers to my questions, not even a one-word response.

B.There are different ways of communication, according to different cultures.C.Why is that?

D.Strong communication is very important to a child’s education.

E.I feel that schools nowadays don’t communicate with parents enough and neither is involvement.

F.My elementary school teachers all touched my life.

G.What do you think of it?

Today, kids have more worries and face more pressures than ever before. Here are a few tips to help your child focus on and do well in school.

●Create a personal schedule

Rec ording everything that must be done on a calendar or “to do” list will help him to keep track of important dates and deadlines. If he keeps it in a visible place he will have no problem acknowledging upcoming events and will be better able to plan how and where to spend his time.

●Watch the clock

2I also recommend setting his clock or watch five minutes ahead since it's always easy to run late. When it comes to something like catching a bus, just five minutes can make a significant difference.

●Focus

He should train himself to be able to concentrate alone on one specific task. This is much easier in a noise-free environment. No TV or radio should be on to distract him.

●3

Lack of sleep is proven to harm us physically. The more sleep we get,the more alert we are.We thus have more energy to handle life's daily tasks. The average adult needs at least six hours of sleep a night and the average child needs at least eight.

●Stay in shape

Through spending time outdoors or playing sports with friends,he can “blow off some steam” so to speak,as well as re-energize.4

●Talk through your problems

Be able to share his concerns with you. 5If you make it clear that you understand him and are willing to help, not only will you contribute to his emotional health but you'll help build an open and honest relationship as well.

A.Sharing feelings often makes them easier to deal with.

B.Help your child work better to realize his aim.

C.Setting an alarm for the morning is a must.

D.Get enough sleep.

E.Help your child do better in school.

F.Encourage your child to be positive.

G.Encourage him to get outside.

About 2 months ago I realized how often my mother's caregiver(看护者)would do kind things for me. 1 She always does things which touch me so much, like picking oranges and juicing them, making my bed for me when my muscles are so tight I can’t bend over easily, clearing the leaves and weeding the front yard..... those kinds of things.

2 But I decided to help her, since she is paid a set wage by the agency we went through, and has a large family to raise. I would put a dollar in a decorative box every time I see one of those kinds of things that she has done for me.

I have already changed out 20 single dollar bills for a $20 bill TWICE and have probably about $70 in there. 3 When the time comes (and it will, probably this year) when we can no longer afford a caregiver for my mother, I will have a box of money that will say thank you in a clear way.

4 She is our own precious angel. And while I know she does these things out of kindness and love for us, it will be my chance to do something out of love and kindness for her. Because it is just a dollar every now and then, it is hardly missed. But in 6 months, or however long it is before the money runs out, it will have grown to quite a bundle of love.

I don’t want the day to come when she will no longer be with us. The reason is that I will miss her presence terribly. 5

A.However, I can hardly wait to give box of money to her!

B.Not just little things, but only things.

C.It is just like all the bundles of things she has done for me.

D.We’ve had her for 2.5 years, and she's like family to us.

E.I always thank her, and she says she enjoys it.

F.That’s my own “thank you for your many kindnesses” box.

G.It hopefully will help to tide her over until she gets a new job.

The hardest language

People often ask which is the most difficult language to learn, and it is not easy

to answer because there are many factors to take into consideration. Firstly, in a first language the differences are unimportant as people learn their mother tongue naturally. 1

A native speaker of Spanish, for example, will find Portuguese much easier to learn than a native speaker of Chinese, for example, because Portuguese is very similar to Spanish, while Chinese is very different. 2 The greater the differences

between the second language and our first, the harder it will be for most people to learn.

3 Teachers and the circumstances in which the language is learned also play an important role, as well as each learner’s motivation for learning. If people learn a language because they need to use it professionally, they often learn it faster than people studying a language that has no direct use in their day to day life.

Apparently, British diplomats and other embassy staff have found that the second hardest language is Japanese, which will probably come as no surprise to many, but the language that they have found to be the most problematic is Hungarian, which has 35 forms of a nouns according to whether it is subject, object, etc.

4 In the case of Hungarian for British learners, it is not a question of the writing system, which uses a similar alphabet, but the grammatical complexity, though native speakers of related languages may find it easier, while struggling with languages that the British find relatively easy.

No language is easy to learn well, though languages which are related to our first language are easier. Learning a completely different writing system is a huge challenge, but that does not necessarily make a language more difficult than another. 5

A. In this case, first language can affect learning a second language.

B. Therefore, it is difficult to gain a good knowledge of every language.

C. Some people seem to learn languages readily, while others find it very difficult.

D. This does not mean that Hungarian is the hardest language to learn for everyone.

E. Individuals from different cultures will find different languages more difficult.

F. It is impossible to say that there is one language that is the most difficult language in the world.

G. So the question of how hard a language is to learn is only relevant when learning a second language.

Home can be a great place for children to study. It’s important to provide a workspace of their own where they can read books or just write a letter to their friends.

●Location (位置)

2 Kitchen and dining room are not so well suited for regular study, since books and pens get in the way of the day-to-day uses of those areas. Set up a place where a child can settle in and leave papers and pens at hand without having to clear everything away each night. For a child that likes being alone, set aside a corner of his bedroom, but keep it separate from things like games, music and other hobbies not related to studying.

●Keeping Things in Order

Parents should encourage their child to spread out, but to leave it neat and orderly when he isn’t using his workspace. Ownership is very important for self-respect. 3 The workplace should be personal, but not another part of the playroom.

Competitors who wear red win more than those that are dressed in any other color, according to study in Germany.

1 Experts believe that red could make individuals and teams feel more confident as well as being perceived by others as more aggressive.

2 On the other hand, the results could suggest that the success of those teams has given those that wear the red color more confident.

The study, by German sports psychologists at the University of Munster, was reported in New Scientist magazine. They showed video recording of taekwondo matches to 42 experienced referees. One fighter wore blue and the other wore red. They then showed them the same recordings but digitally manipulated the clothing to exchange the colors. 3 “If one competitor is strong and the other is weak, it won’t change the outcome of the fight,” said Norbert Hagemann, who led the study.

“ 4 ”

In 2004 scientists at Durham University also looked at how color influenced sporting competitiveness. They analyzed Olympic contest sports such as boxing, taekwondo, and freestyle wrestling and found that nearly 55% of which were won by the competitor in red.

For the rest of March, a disease will sweep across the US. It will keep kids home from school. 1 Employees will suddenly lose their ability to concentrate.

The disease, known as “March Madness”, refers to the yearly 65-team US men‘s college basketball tournament(锦标赛). 2 Teams compete against each other in a single-elimination(单局淘汰) tournament that eventually crowns a national champion.

Nearly 20 million Americans will find themselves prisoners of basketball festival madness. The fun comes partly from guessing the winners for every game. Friends compete against friends. 3 Colleagues against bosses.

Culture means any human behavior that is learned in human society. All of the meaningful parts of a culture are passed on to different generations through tradition or social learning. 1 Culture exists in agricultural as well as industrialized societies.

Culture is necessary for the survival and existence of human beings as human beings. Practically everything humans know, think, value, feel, and do is learned through taking part in a sociocultural system. 2 Here is one of the cases of children growing up apart from human society. In the province of Midnapore in India, the director of a children’s home was told by local villagers that there were “ghost” in the forest. Upon looking into the case, the director found that two children, one about eight years old and the other about six years old, appeared to have been living a pack of wolves in the forest. 3 In his diary, the director describes his first view of Kamala (as the older child was named) and Amala ( the name given to the younger child):

Kamala was a terrible-looking being, the head, a big ball of something covering the shoulders. 4 Their eyes were bright and sharp, unlike human eyes. They were very fond of raw meat and raw milk. Gradually, as they got stronger, they began going on all fours, and afterwards began to run on all fours, just like squirrels.

Children learn human language in the same way they learn other kinds of human behavior——by taking part in a cultural community. 5

B. Close at its heels there came another terrible creature exactly like the first, but smaller in size.
