(2016·全国卷Ⅰ)You probably know who Marie Curie was, but you may not have heard of Rachel Carson. Of the outstanding ladies listed below, who do you think was the most important woman of the past 100 years?

Jane Addams(1860~1935)

Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank. Addams helped the poor and worked for peace. She encouraged a sense of community(社区)by creating shelters and promoting education and services for people in need. In 1931,Addams became the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Rachel Carson(1907~1964)

If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. Her popular 1962 book Silent Spring raised awareness of the dangers of pollution and the harmful effects of chemicals on humans

and on the world’s lakes and oceans.

Sandra Day O’Connor(1930~present)

When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School, in 1952,she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. She became an Arizona state senator(参议员) and, in 1981, the first woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court. O’Connor gave the deciding vote in many important cases during her 24 years on the top court.

Rosa Parks(1913~2005)

On December 1,1955,in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks would not give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Her simple act landed Parks in prison. But it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil﹣rights movement. “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in,”said Parks.

1. What is Jane Addams noted for in history?

A.Her social work.

B.Her teaching skills.

C.Her efforts to win a prize.

D.Her community background.

Anyone who has

ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank.(任何一个受到社会工作者帮助的人都要感谢Jane Addams)可知,在历史上,Jane Addams以她的社会工作而出名,与A项相符。

2. What was the reason for O’Connor’s being rejected by the law firm?

A.Her lack of proper training in law.

B.Her little work experience in court.

C.The discrimination against women.

D.The poor financial conditions.

When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School…可知,她在斯坦福大学法学院受过教育,并非缺少正规的法律培训,故A项错误;文中未提及她在法庭上的工作经验少,故B 项错误;根据…she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman.

3. Who made a great contribution to the civil﹣rights movement in the U.S.?

A.Jane Addams.

B.Rachel Carson.

C.Sandra Day O’Connor.

D.Rosa Parks.

根据Rosa Parks下的…it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil﹣rights movement.

4. What can we infer about the women mentioned in the text?

A.They are highly educated.

B.They are truly creative.

C.They are pioneers.

D.They are peace﹣lovers.

根据Jane Addams下的…the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize., Rachel Carson下的If it weren’t for Rachel Carson,

the environmental movement might not exist today., Sandra Day O’Connor下的…the first woman to join the U.S. Supreme Court.以及Rosa Parks下的…it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott…kicked off the civil﹣rights movement.

Module 1 Reading The City of the Future What will the city of the future look like No one knows for sure, and making predictions is a risky business. But one thing is certain— they are going to get bigger before they get smaller. In the future, care for the environment will become very important as earth's natural resources run out. We will use lots of recycled materials, such as plastic, aluminium, steel, glass, wood and paper, and we will waste fewer natural resources. We will also have to rely more on alternative energy, such as solar and wind power. All this seems certain, but there are plenty of things about city life in the future which are not certain. To find out what young people think about the future of urban life, a teacher at a university in Texas in the United States asked his students to think how they would run a city of 50,000 people in the year 2025. Here are some of the ideas they had: Garbage ships To get rid of garbage problems, the city will load huge spaceships with waste materials and send them towards the sun, preventing landfill and environmental problems. Batman Nets Police will arrest criminals by firing nets instead of guns.

For forty years Jane Goodall has been outspoken about making the rest of the world understand and respect the life of these animals. She has argued that wild animals should be left in the wild and not used for entertainment or advertisements. She has helped to set up special places where they can live safely. She is leading a busy life but she says: "Once I stop, it all comes crowding in and I remember the chimps in laboratories. It's terrible. It affects me when I watch the wild chimps. I say to myself, 'Aren't they lucky?" And then I think about small chimps in cages
