Father’s Day is a fairly new celebration in Britain compared with Mother’s Day, which has been a very popular and well celebrated festival in the UK for a very long time.

Father’s Day was first celebrated in America, and it came from the actions of a man named William Smart. He used to be in the army during the US Civil War and his wife died when giving birth to their sixth child. He raised six children alone without marrying again, which was unusual back in those days.

His daughter, Sonora Dodd, realized when she was an adult what her father had done for his children. It was in the early 1900s and she was actually at church one day, listening to a talk on Mother’s Day. She thought there should be a Father’s Day celebration. And so the tradition was born, on the third Sunday every June, close to the anniversary(纪念日) of Sonora’s father’s death.

Britain took the idea of Father’s Day from the American celebration and it has been celebrated officially since the 1970s. Father’s Day is never quite such a big event in business as Mother’s Day, probably because it hasn’t existed for so long.

I was born in New York, but I grew up in San Francisco. I began to live in London 25 years ago. If I am asked now where I want to live forever, I would say London. But I will always be an American.

San Francisco, like London and Sydney, has many parks. Every day my sisters and I were taken to play in the parks as children. I didn’t go to school. I only had three hours of formal education when I was five. I was sent to school in the morning but6 came home at noon on the first day. I said I didn’t enjoy it and I hadn’t learn anything. My parents thought that school was unsuitable for me. They agreed with me, so I never went back to school.

Then my mother taught me and my two sisters at home, in the way of an English lady who had good education. We learned languages and reading more than sciences and math. Sometimes she taught us herself, but we also had other teachers. They asked us to take lessons every day. About once a week we walked to Golden Gate Park. While we were walking, my mother taught me to read music. One day I noticed a little toy train in the window of a shop and I remember now how I’d like to have it. I couldn’t say “r” when I was small. My mother said if I could say an “r” well, I would have the toy train. I practiced and practiced. Then one morning I woke everybody up with my “r”s. I got the toy train. Very often, we have small medical problems that aren’t serious enough to require a visit to the doctor’s office. Problems, such as a sore throat or a stomachache, can often be take care of with medicines available on drug stores. However, many people prefer to treat slight medical problems at home instead of going to a doctor.

For a sore throat, it’s certainly easy to stop by a local drug store and pick up a pack of lozenges(含片). But some people prefer to make special drinks, such as warm milk with honey, or lemon juice and honey. Other people like to wash out their mouths with warm, salty water.

Stomachaches can be treated with medicines that are available at local drug stores, but many people first try drinking soda(苏打水) to settle their stomachs. Another more natural treatment is peppermint(薄荷) tea.

Besides the various cold medicines available, many people treat their colds by having a bowl of homemade chicken soup. Others like to drink hot water with lemon and honey before they go to bed.

Many books offer helpful suggestions for the treatment of small medical problems at home and provide useful information about first-aid. In case of a bee sting(蜇伤), for example, they advise that you put mud or a piece of potato directly on the sting or a little vinegar on the skin so the sting will disappear.

阅读理解(共两小节,共40分) 第一节(共15题, 每题2分, 共30分) A Do dogs understand us? Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think. A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee(黑猩猩). In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn't see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in seven out of l0 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination(排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种)known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It's hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can't talk back. Still, it wouldn't hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return! 1. From paragraph 2 we know that __ . A. animals are as clever as human beings B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees C. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills D. dogs have similar 'learning abilities as 3-year-old children 2. Both experiments show that . A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right B. Rico can recognize different things including toys C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics D. Rico won't forget the names of objects once recognizing them 3. Which of the following statements is true? A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie's mental abilities. B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training. C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects. D. Rico is born to understand its owner's commands. 4. What does the writer want to tell us? A. To train your dog. B. To talk to your dog. C. To be friendly to your dog. D. To be careful with your dog. B NOT all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars. Often they relive these experiences in nightmares. Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which will help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce ,or possibly erase(抹去),the effect of painful memories. In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased. The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, While others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers' troubling memories after war. They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible 班级姓名
