A brief plot of Sons and Lovers

Sons and Lovers was written by D. H. Lawrence, a famous English writer and poet. It is an autobiographical novel about a mother’s suffocating, possessive love for her son.

Walter Morel, is a coal miner with a severe drinking problem. His wife is better educated than him. But Mr. Morel’s temper is getting worse, he always fights and argues with his wife. Mrs. Morel is disappointed, so she rests her hope on her first son---William, who is intelligent and active. Unfortunately, William dies, Mrs. Morel is depressed. She gives all love to her another son---Paul. She loves Paul very much and encourages him to become a successful business man. She controls Paul’s everything. However, Paul falls in love with Miriam later. Mrs. Morel is very angry and not allows Paul to marry Miriam. She thinks Miriam is a bad woman who wants to take her son away.

Day after day, the emotion between Paul and his mother becomes deep. Paul finally follows his mother’s advice and ends his affair with Miriam. However, he then keeps ambiguous relationship with Clara who has a husband. But Clara, likes Miriam, wants their relationship permanent, or at least stable. This is impossible because Paul loves his mother so much. And finally, Paul’s mother is dying of stomach cancer. Paul gives her an overdose of morphine to end her suffering. After his mother’s death, Paul remains in deep despair. Eventually, he leaves the city and starts a new life.
