“别”有一番滋味

other, the other, others, the others, another, else 在英语中都有“别”意，常表示“别的”，“其他的”或“另外的”，但滋味不同，现在就让我们来咀嚼一下：
一、other 用作前置定语，修饰单数或复数名词，意思是“别的”，“其他的”。例如：
China is larger than any other country in Asia. 中国在亚洲比任何国家都大。
Did you read any other books? 你看过别的书吗？
二、the other 表示特指，作代词时，指两者中的“另一者”。例如：
She has two brothers. One is Jack, the other is Tom.
她有两个哥哥，一个是杰克，另一个是汤姆。
There are five apples on the table. One is big and red, the other are small and green. 桌子上有五个苹果，一个又大又红，其他的又小又青。
the other 也可用作形容词，例如：
Now open the other eye. 好啦，睁开另一只眼。
Where are the other classmates? 其余的同学在哪里？
三、others，用作代词，意思是“别人”，“其他的人或物”。例如：
Don’t lend the books to others. 别把书借给别人。
I don’t like these. Can you show me any others?
我不喜欢这几个，你能不能另外拿几个给我看看？
四、the others 只能作代词，表示特指，意思是“其余的人或事物”，指代某范围中除去某部分之后，余下的全部人或物。例如：
He is Chinese, the others are Americans. 他是中国人，其他的是美国人。
These five notebooks are yours and the others are his.
这五本记录本是你的，其他的是他的。
五、another 用于泛指三者或三者以上的“另一个”，名词前不再用冠词。例如：
I don’t like this skirt. Please show me another one.
我不喜欢这件裙子，请给我看看别的。
Let another girl have a try. 让另一个女孩试一下。
六、else 用作形容词，常放在疑问代词或不定代词的后面，表示“别的；其他的”。例如：
What else did he say? 他还说了些什么？
You should ask somebody else. 你应该问一下别人。
也可用作副词，常放在疑问副词后面，表示“另外；其他”。例如：
When else shall we meet again? 我们另外什么时候再见面？
