The Application of Situational Language Teaching in English Vocabulary Teaching in Junior High School

II. Aim, significance and current researches

English has become the international language for many years. It is very important for students to master English well today no matter in speaking、listening、writing or reading. What’s more, with the reform of English Curriculum Standard, students need to master more vocabulary. As Levelt said that vocabulary is a driving force of the language output. Words,forming sentences and essay, is the basic element of learning English well. The more vocabulary students master, the better they do in speaking、listening、reading and writing. Therefore,the writer researches the Situational Teaching Method with the expectation of finding some good and new strategies for English vocabulary teaching in junior high school to help students master vocabulary better including the vocabulary size、understanding and how to use.

Situational Teaching Method has been proved is effective in classroom teach by many researchers both at home and abroad . More and more teachers use the Situational Language Teaching in their class. However, most of them don’t research SLT( Situational Language Teaching) in a specific aspect. For example, there is only few people study the application of SLT in vocabulary teaching. And there are also many problems in English vocabulary teaching both in urban area and rural

area.Therefore, the writer research the methods of vocabulary teaching by using of SLT. In this research, the application of SLT will improve students’ interest, in which students would like to accept new knowledge. Students learn vocabulary in class will ease their learning burden to some extent and improve their power of vocabulary size、understanding、and using. The success of this thesis will call back teachers attention on vocabulary and use SLT in vocabulary teaching effectively. It will improve not only students’ study in English vocabulary but also quality of teaching. It’s an win-win event.

III. Main Ideas

Through researching the details and surveys, the writer analyze and find the problems of English vocabulary teaching in junior high school. There are problems that many teachers teach vocabulary alone and lacking situational context. The different meaning of one words couldn’t present well to motivate students’ interest to master vocabulary proactively and help them remember well. Therefore, the writer observes the application of Situational Language Teaching and do theory researches detailedly. The writer finds that it’s an effective way to teaching and learning vocabulary in SLT through reappearing sight and create situation which is related to life scene .

V. Research Methods

Before I write this thesis, I have made some research on the Situational Language Teaching and the present situation of the English vocabulary teaching in junior high school. Now, I have read some materials and data about them, which can be found in the library and on the Internet. And then I will make a careful research into them by adopting analysis, summarization, and generalization based on the materials and data I have collected.
