Dialogue

我刚来北京,对于中国即将举行的奥运会也非常感兴趣,你能不能简单地告诉我一些关于北京奥运会的基本信息呢?B: Thank you, Jay, of course I can tell you something. As a volunteer, I have the responsibility to promote the Beijing Olympic Games. What would you like to know? A: 太好了!

B: Oh, no problem, I will explain to you one by one. First, let’s talk about the slogan of the Beijing Games. That is ―One World, One Dream.‖ This slogan reflects the essence of the universal values of the Olympic spirit. In spite of our differences, we come together for the Olympic Games. This slogan was chosen from thousands of proposals submitted by people across China and around the world.

B: ―One World, One Dream‖ is simple in expression, but profound in meaning. It conveys the lofty ideal of the people in Beijing, as well as in China, i.e., the Chinese people and the world people share the same globe and will create a bright future hand in hand. It also voices the aspiration of the Chinese people to contribute to the establishment of a peaceful and beautiful world.

这个口号肯定也反映了北京奥运会的主要理念吧?B: Yes, you are right. This slogan also reflects the core concept of the Beijing Games. The concept can be understood in three aspects; they are ―green Olympics‖, ―high-tech Olympics‖, and ―people’s Olympics‖. It also reflects the common belief in peace, progress and harmonious development, living together in friendship, cooperation and mutual benefit, and pursuit of happy life.

B: With pleasure. The mascot of Beijing Games is indeed composed of five pretty parts. In Chinese, mascot literally means an auspicious object, something that brings you good luck. There are five mascots for the Beijing 2008 Games, known as Fuwa, to match the five Olympic rings. Beibei is the Fish, Jingjing is the Panda, Huanhuan, the Olympic Flame, Yingying, the Tibetan Antelope and Nini, the Swallow. When you put their names together they say ―Beijing Welcomes You.‖

B: Sure. In their headpieces, you can see the five elements of nature—the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky—all stylistically rendered in ways that represent the deep traditional influences of Chinese folk art and ornament ation. Let’s first look at Beibei. Beibei is the fish. In China’s traditional culture and art, fish are symbols of prosperity. Jingjing is the Fuwa in the form of a panda. The lotus designs in Jingjing’s headdress, which are inspired by the porcelain paintings of the Song Dynasty, represent the desire to preserve the beauty of nature for all generations.

B: Yes. Huanhuan is a child of fire, symbolizing the Olympic Flame and the passion of sport. The fiery designs of his head ornament are drawn from the famed Dunhuang murals. Then is Yingying, which is a fast and agile antelope. His head ornament

incorporates several decorative styles from the Qinghai-Tibet and Xinjiang cultures and the ethnic design traditions of the west regions in China. The last Fuwa is Nini. Nini draws inspiration from the golden-winged swallow kites of China, traditionally one of the most popular designs. Swallow is also pronounced ―yanzi‖ in Chinese, and Yanjing is what Beijing was called as an ancient capital city.

B: Yes, I am quite proud to be selected as one of the volunteers for the Games. You know, during the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Paralympics,100,000 volunteers will provide direct services to visitors and athletes, the largest number of volunteers in any Olympic games.

B: The Beijing Volunteer Association in cooperation with various media organizations launched the ―Smiling Beijing‖ campaign on August 8, 2006, and the citizens of Beijing will smile to all visitors to express their enthusiasm and hospitality. The slogan of the Campaign is ―The smile of the volunteers is the best name card of Beijing‖. In terms of our job, it mainly includes reception, transportation, security, medical aid, game operation support, venue-operation support, news-operation support, and support in organizing various cultural activities.

B: Yes. Not all of the events for the Beijing Games will be held in Beijing. For example, the equestrian events you mentioned will be held at the Hong Kong Sports Institute in Sha Tin. Sailing will take place in Qingdao, Shandong Province. Football will take place in Shanghai, Qinhuangdao, and Tianjin. Regarding sports venues, the two most well-known are the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube, also known as the National Stadium and the National Aquatics Center respectively. The grand opening and closing ceremonies will be held in Bird’s Nest, and the Water Cube will host various aquatic events, including swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo during the Olympics.

B: You are welcome, Jay.

Passage 4

China’s Road to the Olympi cs

China’s Olympic bid intention dates back to 1908, when the Tianjin Youth magazine raised three questions to the Chinese people: When can China send an

athlete to participate in the Olympic Games? When can China send a team to participate in the Olympic Games? When can China host an Olympic Games? In 1979, Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping pointed out that China would bid to host the Olympic Games when time was appropriate. In 1984, IOC President Samaranch said the IOC would like to see China host not only the 1990 Asian Games but also the Olympic Games.

During 1991 and 2001, Beijing made two Olympic bids, one for 2000 and the other for 2008. In its first bid Beijing lost to Sydney by a narrow margin of two votes. By the time Beijing made its second bid for the Olympic Games in 1999, China as a developing country had maintained an annual economic growth of 10.8 percent over the previous decade. Beijing as the capital had also shown great potential of economic growth with its GDP surging to 2.4 billion U.S. dollars in 1999, or 2,000 dollars on a per capita basis. In the meantime, China had developed a prosperous cause of sport, making great achievements in major world tournaments, giving an impetus to Beijing’s bid for the 2008 Olympic Games.

On July 13, 2001, over 100 IOC members assembled at Moscow, the capital of Russian to attend the 112th IOC Sessions. They would soon select the host city for the 29th Olympics in 2008 from the 5 candidate cities of Beijing, Toronto, Paris, Istanbul and Osaka. In a rapidly changing world, it takes great courage, vision and insight to choose the best venue for a global event to be held 7 years from then.

The Chinese delegation’s bid presentation left a lasting impression on the IOC members present. Vice-Premier Li Lanqing reaffirmed that the Chinese Government would stand firmly behind Beijing in its bid for the 2008 Olympic Games and would do whatever it could to ensure successful and excellent Games in Beijing. The IOC members could see into the future from then and believed that in 7 years, Beijing and the whole of China would be home to stable society, prosperous economy and well-off people, that the country’s transportation and environmental situation would be greatly improved, and that the cause of democracy and rule of law would continually advance. Thus, they cast their solemn votes for Beijing, capital of the world’s largest developing country.

When IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch declared Beijing as the host for the 2008 Olympic Games, all the Chinese watching the live telecast of the voting burst into thunderous cheers and applause. Beijing won in a landslide victory in the second round secret ballot with an overwhelming majority of 56 votes from 105 voting IOC members. The world felt Beijing’s strength and was moved by its sincerity. It was a victory for Beijing. It was a victory for China, and it was a victory for the Olympic spirit.

Speech at the Closing Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic

Games by BOCOG President Liu Qi

Respected President Hu Jintao and Mrs. Hu,

Respected President Sir Philip Craven and Mrs Craven,

Respected President Jacques Rogge and Mrs Rogge,

Distinguished guests,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Dear friends,

On this occasion of the successful conclusion of the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games, please allow me, on behalf of BOCOG, to extend my warmest congratulations to all the athletes who have participated in the Games. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the International Paralympic Committee, the National Paralympic Committees and the International Paralympic Sports Federations. My thanks also go to the volunteers who have always been so ready to help, and all our friends who have contributed to this Paralympic Games.

This Paralympic Games is a grand event embodying the concepts of ―Transcendence, Integration and Equality‖. More than 4,000 Paralympic athletes from 147 countries and regions have been competing to offer their very best and to transcend themselves. They have accomplished remarkable achievements by breaking 279 world records and 339 Paralympic records. They have shown their positive attitude toward life, such as self-respect, self-confidence,self-improvement and self-reliance. They have sung a hymn to humanity by displaying their sporting excellence. Every Paralympic athlete

has provided a unique interpretation of the value and significance of life through his or her fortitude and perseverance. It is indeed an exciting and educational experience to watch their performance in competition. All of them are masters of their own destinies. Let us pay high tribute to all the Paralympic athletes.

This Paralympic Games has also been a celebration for people with disability, and an occasion where Paralympic athletes have shared the joy of success and the pleasure of participation through their hard work. Spectators and athletes interacted as their hearts beat together, creating a sea of jubilation in the Paralympic stadiums. Inspired by the Paralympic Games, more than 300,000 people with disabilities in Beijing further integrated themselves into society, experiencing not only the charm of the Games but

also the enthusiasm of the community. Thanks to the television broadcasts, people with disabilities throughout the world have been able to witness the magnificence of the Paralympic sports and share the wonderful moments of the Paralympic Games.

Finally, this Paralympic Games has been a great event to arouse public interest and to promote the cause for people with disabilities. Owing to the Paralympic Games, the public accessible facilities in Beijing have been significantly improved, and moreover, an accessible bridge has also been formed to join our hearts. People with disabilities need more understanding, care and love from the rest of society. Even a little love from each and every one of us will make the world more harmonious and beautiful.

Dear friends, time flies when we enjoy ourselves together. At this moment when the Paralympic flame is about to be extinguished, let us make a wish from the bottom of our hearts. May this holy flame, lit with passion, turn into a rainbow that will link all people with friendship and convey love to all people.

Now, I have the honor of inviting Sir Philip Craven, President of the

International Paralympic Committee, to speak.

Passage 6

China’s Martial Arts and Go

Traditionally, the Chinese love sports as an essential method for keeping fit as well as for entertainment, like the dragon-boat races during the Duanwu Festival, swings at the Qingming Festival, and climbing mountains during the Double-ninth Festival. People also relate sports to an enhanced insight into life, such as with go and Chinese chess. As a country with diverse cultural tradition passed down from one generation to another over a long history, China has developed a variety of sports, including archery, cuju(traditional football), sumo and other forms of wrestling, equestrianism,

martial arts, and acrobatics. Among these, martial arts and acrobatics may be said to be the ―superb‖ skills of China. Now I’d like to talk briefly about martial arts and go.

Martial Arts

When people talk of China’s martial arts, or kungfu, they most immediately think of Bruce Lee, and his great accomplishments in boxing, swordplay and skill with knives and sticks. With his kungfu movies popularized throughout the world, he became the embodiment of Chinese martial arts. His dazzling three-section stick skills left a deep impression on audiences. Bruce Lee’s kungfu was deeply rooted in traditional Chinese martial arts.

In Chinese martial arts circles, Shaolin Temple enjoys great repute for its distinct style of martial arts –precious feature of China’s cultural legacy.Shaolin Temple, located on Songshan Mountain in Henan Province, was first built at the end of the 5th century. Bodhidharma, a Buddhist master, came here in the 6th century, and through meditating by facing a wall for 9 years developed Zen Buddhism, hence making the temple famous throughout the country. Later generation attributed the invention of Shaolin martial arts to him, saying that due to long periods of sitting, he created a set of movements to adjust the internal circulation of the qi, and to relax the body and mind. Shaolin martial arts have developed a variety of forms over the long years, hence the attribu tion of ―72 types of Shaolin martial arts.‖ Long boxing, short boxing, knife and stick play and swordplay, each claims its own unique skills.

Shaolin martial arts also emphasize the combination of motion and stillness, as described in the words of a song:‖ Lie like a bow, stand like a pine tree, sit like a bell, and walk like the wind.‖ The highest criterion for Shaolin martial arts is the oneness of boxing and Zen Buddhism. Shaolin Temple has had a far-reaching influence on Chinese martial arts.

Go

Go is an important competitive game with origins in China from more than 4,000 years ago. It was introduced to the Korean Peninsula and Japan over 1,000 years ago, and has since become a favorite pastime of many people in northeast Asia. Today, go still serves as a means of cultural exchange between the peoples of China, Japan and Korea, as they engage in numerous tournaments every year.

Go is not only a competitive event but also a game of entertainment. In the old

days, literati would usually have a set of go pieces on their desks. When a friend came around, both host and guest would enjoy a game of go, along with fine wine, as described in the following lines of poetry: ‖Enjoy a pot of fragrant tea till sunset, / Play a game of go till year-end.‖

Playing go helps to calm the mind. On a clear day, one can play a game with a visiting friend, while indulging in random reflections on life and history. Or, on a moonlit night, two friends might sit by a go board, while sipping cups of fragrant tea. Except for the moonlight shining through the window, nothing else seems to exist. Gone from their minds, too, are any thoughts of worldly favor or humiliation.

It can be said to be one of my most important action movies. CNN:Why do you say that? You have made about 30 movies. How is this one different from the rest? Normally, action movies follow such a formula: a child’s parents got killed, and this child started playing Kongfu at a very young age, determined to take his revenge. 举例来说,杂货店的指示牌会把他们引向stationary(静止处),虽然便笺本、相册、和笔记本等真正的stationery(文具用品)并没有被钉在那儿。朋友和亲人常宣称They've just ate。实际上,他们应该说They've just eaten。

Exercise One Listen to the following texts and then reproduce in the same language at the end of each segment: Text 1.1 Mr Governor, Ladies and Gentlemen, It is my great pleasure to be invited to attend the Guangdong Governor?s International A dvisory Council Meeting.// I would like to take this opportunity to highlight our report to the Governor and share with you our view on the role of telecommunications and information infrastructure (ICT) in the economic development.// International experience suggests that Information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and services can have a substantial impact on the competitiveness of firms, nations, and regions. The most important impact of ICT does not come from manufacturing ICT goods, but from investing in and using ICT infrastructure and services.// According to the ITU, global telecommunications services sales reached US$ 1.1 trillion in 2002, more than three times the value of telecommunications equipment sales of US$335 billion. The value created by use of telecommunications services is estimated to be far higher than the total services revenue. Thus investment in ICT infrastructure creates value many times that of the investment itself. // Firm level studies show that ICT investments help firms gain competitiveness through improved efficiency, reduced inventories, better designs, and faster rates of innovation. ICT allows firms to increase the efficiency of their business processes by decreasing procurement and transaction costs, improving accounting and control, enhancing management systems, and streamlining their supply chains.// Several studies also indicate that ICT is a key driver of productivity and growth. There are several distinctive features of ICT that make them particularly important to national and regional economies, which include the pervasive and cross-cutting nature of ICT, the low or declining marginal costs of using the technologies, the ability to foster efficiency gains through streamlining supply chains, the facilitation of the creation of entirely new business models and industries, and the global nature of ICT.// All of these characteristics imply that ICT can have an important impact on competitiveness and economic development.// Text 1.2 主席先生: 我很高兴参加2001’国际投资论坛。
