1)Sign has become a scientific hot button. Only in the past 20 years have specialists in language study realized that signed languages are unique—a speech of the hand. They offer a new way to probe how the brain generates and understands language, and throw new light on an old scientific controversy: whether language, complete with grammar, is something that we are born With, or whether it is a learned behavior. The current interest in sign language has roots in the pioneering work of one rebel teacher at Gallaudet University in Washington, D. C., the world’s only liberal arts university for deaf people. When Bill Stokoe went to Gallaudet to teach English, the school enrolled him in a course in signing. But Stokoe noticed something odd: among themselves, students signed differently from his classroom teacher. Stokoe had been taught a sort of gestural code, each movement of the hands representing a word in English. At the time, American Sign Language (ASL) was thought to be no more than a form of pidgin English But Stokoe believed the “hand talk” his students used looked richer. He wondered: Might deaf people actually: have a genuine language? And could that language be unlike any other on Earth? I t was 1955, when even deaf people dismissed their signing a s “substandard”. Stokoe’s idea was academic heresy It is 37 years later. Stokoe—now devoting his time to writing and editing books and journals and to producing video materials on ASL and the deaf culture—is having lunch at a cafe near the Gallaudet campus and explaining how he started a revolution. For decades educators fought his idea that signed languages are natural languages like English, French and Japanese. They assumed language must be based on speech, the modulation (调节) of sound. But sign language is based on the movement of hands, the modulation of space. “What I said,” Stokoe explains, “is that language is not mouth stuff—it’s brain stuff.” 21. The study of sign language is thought to be _____C___. A) a new way to look at the learning of language B) a challenge to tradi t ional, views on the nature of language C) an approach: to simplifying the grammatical structure of a language D) an attempt to clarify misunderstanding about the origin of language(C) 22. The, present growing interest in sign language was stimulated by ___C_____. A) a famous scholar in the study of the human brain B) a leading specialist in the study of liberal arts C) an English teacher in a university for the deaf D) some senior experts in American Sign Language(C) 23. According to Stokoe, sign language is _____B___. A) a Substandard language B) a genuine language C) an artificial language D) an international language(B)

I.Reading Comprehension (30%; one mark each) Directions: Read the following six passages. Answer the questions below each passage by choosing [A], [B], [C], or [D]. Write your answers on the Answer Sheet. Passage One In general, our society is becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic management in which man becomes a small,well-oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages, Nell-ventilated factories and piped music, and by psychologists and “huma n-relations” experts; yet all this oiling does not alter the fact that man has become powerless, that he is bored with it. In fact, the blue and the white-collar workers have become economic puppets who dance to the tune of automated machines and bureaucratic management. The worker and employee are anxious, not only because they might find themselves out of a job; they are anxious also because they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction of interesting life. They live and die without ever having confronted the fundamental realities of human existence as emotionally and intellectually independent and productive human beings. Those higher up on the social ladder are no less anxious. Their lives are no less empty than those of their subordinates. They are even more insecure in some respects. They are in a highly competitive race. To be promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of self-respect. When they apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the right mixture of submissiveness and independence. From the moment on they are tested again and again-by the psychologists, for whom testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge their behavior, sociability, capacity to get along, etc. This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one’s fellow-competitor creates constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness. Am I suggesting that we should return to the preindustrial mode of production or to nineteenth-century “free enterprise” capitalism? Certainly not. Problems the never solved by returning to a stage which one has already outgrown. I suggest transforming our social system form, a bureaucratically managed industrialism in which maxima, production and consumption are ends in themselves, into a humanist industrialism in which man and full

I.Reading Comprehension(30%;one mark each): Direction:Read the following six passages.Answer the questions below each.passage by choosing A,B,C or D.Write your answers On the Answer Sheet. Passage One Concern with money, and then more money,in order to buy the conveniences and luxuries of modern life, has brought great changes to the lives of most Frenchmen.More people are working than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing.Offices, shops, and factories are discovering the great efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunchrooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus the“typical”Frenchman produces more, earns more, and buys more goods than his counterpart of the last generation. He gains in creating comforts and ease of life. What he loses to some extent is his sense of persona, uniqueness,or individuality. Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the U.S.is a world symbol of the technological society and its consumer products,The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. They fear that“assembly-line life”will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and leisurely(but less productive)old French style. What will happen, they ask, to taste, elegance, and the cultivation of the good things in life-joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple,a stroll by the river,or just happy hours of conversation in a local cafe? Since the late1950s life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit of material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the triumph of this competitive,goods-oriented culture.Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modern economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old. 1.The old French way of life is characterized by______. A.leisure, elegance, and efficiency B.elegance, efficiency, and taste C.leisure, elegance, and taste D.leisure, efficiency, and taste 2.According to the passage, all the following are the description of today’s Frenchmen EXCEPT that______. A.many of them prefer the modern lifestyle B.they actually enjoy working at the assembly line C.they are more concerned with money than before D.they are more competitive than the old generation 3.Which of the following is true about the critics? A.Critics are greater in number than people enjoying the new way of life. B.Student critics are greater in number than critics in other fields.

I.Reading Comprehension(30%;one mark each) Directions:Read the following six passages.Answer the questions below each passage by Choosing A,B,C,or D.Write your answers on the Answer Sheet. Passage One Speech is so familiar a feature of daily life that we rarely pause to define it.It seems as natural to man as walking, and only less so than breathing.Yet it needs but a moment’s reflection to convince us that this naturalness of speech is but an illusory feeling. The process of acquiring speech is,in sober fact,an utterly different sort of thing from the process of learning to walk.In the case of the latter function, culture,in other words, the traditional body of social usage,is not seriously brought into play. The child is individually equipped,by the complex set of factors that we term biological heredity,to make all the needed muscular and nervous adjustments that result in walking.Indeed, the very conformation of these muscles and of the appropriate parts of the nervous system may be said to be primarily adapted to the movements made in walking and in similar activities. In a very real sense, the normal human being is predestined to walk, not because his elders will assist him to learn the art,but because his organism is prepared from birth to take on all those muscular adaptations that result in walking. To put it concisely, walking is an inherent, biological function of man. Not so language. It is of course true that in a certain sense the individual is predestined to talk, but that is due entirely to the circumstance that he is born in the lap of a society that is certain to lead him to its traditions.Eliminate society and there is every reason to believe that he will learn to walk,if,indeed,he survives at all.But it is just as certain that he will never learn to talk, that is,to communicate ideas according to the traditional system of a particular society.Or, again, remove the new-born individual from the social environment into which he has come and transplant him to an utterly foreign one.He will develop the art of walking in his new environment very much as he would have developed it in the old.But his speech will be completely at variance with the speech of his native environment.Walking then is a general human activity that varies only within a restricted limit as we pass from individual to individual. Its variability is purposeless.Speech is a human activity that varies without assignable limit as we pass from social group to social group, the product of long-continued social usage. It varies as all creative effort varies...not as consciously, perhaps, but none the less as truly as do the religions, the beliefs, the customs, and the arts of different peoples.Walking is an organic,an instinctive, function;speech is a non-instinctive,acquired,“cultural”function. 1.The first sentence of Paragraph Two,“Not so language”,is the closest in meaning to_____. A.This is not the case with language B.So is language and net anything else C.No such a thing exists in language D.Not so much with language 2.The real difference between the ability to walk and the ability to talk is that_____. A.the former is like breathing while the latter is not B.the former does not require social interaction while the latter does

I.Reading Comprehension(30%;one mark each) Passage One The longitudinal study demonstrates that students who receive ESL(English as a second language)instruction are far better than those taught primarily in their native language.A comparison of the three-year exit rates for students in ESL and bilingual programs shows that those who receive ESL instruction test out faster and in higher percentages than those who receive instruction in their native language, regardless of the grade in which they entered school. For example,79.3percent of the children who entered ESL programs in kindergarten tested out, while only51.5percent of those who received their education in their native languages did. Likewise,72.9percent of the LEP(limited English proficiency)students who entered programs in the first grade tested out, while only38.5of those in bilingual programs did.For students who entered LEP programs in the ninth grade,91.6percent of those in native-language instruction classes still hadn’t tested out after three years,as compared with78.1percent of those in ESL classes. Furthermore, children who had been in ESL classes tested4higher in English and math once they exited LEP programs than those who had received native-language instruction.Of the LEP students who entered in kindergarten or the first grade,49percent of those who had been in ESL classes eventually read at grade level, while only32percent of those who had been in bilingual classes performed that well.In math, the statistics are even more impressive.Of the children who entered in kindergarten or the first grade, more than69percent of those who had been in ESL classes eventually performed at grade level or above,as opposed to54percent of those who had been in bilingual classes. Naturally, the study provoked a barrage of criticism from the highly political and vocal bilingual lobby, which prompted the New York City Board of Education to issue a paper in November1994mitigating the findings of the study and ignoring the distinction between students in ESL and bilingual education programs.Rather than exit rates, this paper focuses on the achievement of LEP students during the period in which they are in bilingual or ESL classes. The authors show that although the scores of LEP students were below average on the English-language test, their scores in all areas showed improvement;they point out that in math, there were insufficient data on the progress of LEP students to draw valid conclusions. However,a report on citywide mathematics test results in New York in the spring of1995 deals more fully with the math scores of the26,248students who were examined the previous school year in Chinese,Spanish,or Haitian Creole.According to this document,only16.6percent of these children were performing at or above grade level in mathematics.Although this figure represents an improvement of1.1percent over the scores of the previous, year,it discredits the argument that native-language instruction keeps performing at grade level in subject areas. Although LEP students are improving faster than the national norm, they continue to perform far below the norm. 1.This text is mainly______. A.a review of ESL,bilingual and LEP instructions B.a survey of new approaches to subject instructions
