Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension

Directions: There are 4 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A. B. C. and D.You should decide on the best choice and write your answer on the Answer Sheet.

Passage 1

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

The world is not only hungry but also thirsty for water. This may seem strange to you, since nearly 75% of the earth’s surface is covered with water. Bur about 97% of this huge amount is seawater, or salt water. Man can only drink and use the other 3% of the fresh water that comes from rivers, lakes, underground and other sources.

And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is flowing to the sea; some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers. Even worse, some of it has been polluted.

However, as things stand today, this small amount of fresh water, which is constantly being replaced by rainfall, is still enough for us. But our need for water is increasing rapidly-almost day by day. Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid a severe worldwide water shortage later on. It is well known that all living beings will die without water. A limited water supply would have a bad effect on agriculture and industry, on our environment and even our lives. Let me give you just on small example of

how necessary water is to industry.

Did you know that to produce a single ton of steel, it takes about 91.000 liters of water?

We all have to learn how to stop wasting our precious water. One of the first steps we should take is to develop ways of reusing it. Experiments have already been done in this field, but only on a small scale. The systems that have been working out resemble those used in spacecraft.

4. According to the passage, one of the first steps we should take to stop wasting our fresh water is___C__.

5. This passage is mainly about___C__.

A. water and the earth

B. fresh water on earth

C. the water shortage problem

D. experiments on how to reuse fresh water

Passage 2

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

According to the recent poll, more than 50 percent of American high school students have

admitted to cheating on exams at least once. It can be argued that such a result may not mean much. After all, most students have been faced with the temptation to look at other students’ test papers. And students can be hard on themselves in judging such behavior.

However, there are other indications that high school cheating may be on the rise.

Cheating is now considered to be a major problem in colleges and universities. Some professors say they have given up the traditional term paper requirement because a lot of students buy prewritten term papers, and they can’t find out all the cheaters anymore.

Many colleges and universities have decided to do more than talk about the rise in student

cheating. The University of Maryland decided to launch a campaign to stop one form of cheating.

When students finished their exams and moved out in line, they found all but one exit blocked. Proctors ask each student to show an ID card with a photo. Students who said they had left their photos in the dorm or at home had a mug shot taken. The purpose of the campaign was to catch “ringers”, ---students who take tests for other students.

The majority of students at the University of Maryland applauded the campaign. The campus newspaper editorial said, “Like police arresting speeders, the purpose is not to catch everyone but rather to catch enough to spread the word.” Cheating in school may go up and down. But it doesn’t seem linked to the economy. Many educators feel that as students gain confidence in themselves and their abilities, they are less likely to cheat. Surprisingly, some efforts to prevent cheating may actually encourage

cheating, a person may feel “they don’t trust me anyway,” and want to “beat the system.” Distrust can be contagious. But, so can trust!

6. According to the recent poll, __B/D___ have admitted to cheating on exams at least once.

A. more than three quarters of American high school students

B. more than two quarters of American high school students

C. less than one quarter of American high school students

D. more than one second American high school students

7. Why do some professors have given up the traditional term paper requirement? C

A. Because the term papers are uninteresting.

B. Because the term papers are too long to be corrected.

C. Because many students buy prewritten term papers, and they can’t find out all the cheaters anymore.

D. Because no students hand in their term papers.

8. The purpose in making students show their ID card with a photo when they finish the exams is____B___

A. to make students more aware of the great amount of cheating going on.

B. to catch students who take test for other students.

C. to catch those students who sell the information to other students.

D. to compare test results of students who sat near each other.

9. According to the campus newspaper editorial, the purpose of the campaign was____C____

A. to help police catch enough speeders.

B. to catch as many cheaters as is necessary to make known the warning.

C. to track down as many “ringers” as possible to discourage cheating.

D. to stop all forms of cheating once and for all.

10. Why may some efforts to prevent cheating actually encourage cheating? D

A. Because the students do not fear their proctors.

B. Because the students do not want to study any more.

C. Because all the students are very clever.

D. Because all the students may feel that they are not trusted anyway and want to beat the testing

system.

Passage 3

Questions 31to 35 are based on the following passage.

No one knows why we sleep, but it’s certain that we need to. People who are prevented from sleeping begin to suffer obvious effect after a few days--- they think less clearly and they fall asleep during the working hours. Some may have hallucinations(幻觉).

There are no rules about sleep. Generally speaking, grown-ups sleep about seven and a half hours each night and probably more than 60 percent get between seven and eight hours. But perhaps eight percent are quite happy with 5 hours or less, and four percent or so find that they want ten hours more. If you feel all right, you’re probably getting enough sleep. The important thing is not to worry how much other people get—their needs may be different. Exercise doesn’t seem to increase the need for sleep, office workers, for example, sleep for about as long as people doing physically active work.

Children sleep more than grown-ups—perhaps fourteen to eighteen hours soon after birth, going down to grown-up levels by early teenage. Sleep patterns also tend to be different in the elderly, who may sleep less at night than they did when younger. They find sleep getting more broken and often make it a rule to sleep during the daytime.

I am Jackson, an adult student of a university. I seriously suffered from test anxiety because I used to feel so anxious during an examination that I couldn’t even put down the answers I knew.

Test anxiety was real a problem for me. When I worried about my performance on an exam, my heart beat faster and my pulse speeded up. Then I sweated more than normal, suffering from a stomachache and headache. My field of vision narrowed and I often said to my classmates that my mind went blank. It was said that psychological doctor Li helped many students learn how to perform better during exams and bring up their grades. So I went to see him. With his help, I began holding workshops on overcoming test anxiety.

I felt better because I was in a workshop with other sufferers. I realized that I was not the only one who had done poorly on tests because of tension. In the workshop, I was taught that anxiety was normal and I learnt the measures to avoid serious anxiety:

First, learn to relax. This would help relieve tension. You should know that being completely relaxed is no better than being too tense. Understand that in a challenging situation, being anxiously excited is good and will help you to do better. However, if you call it anxiety then it will make you nervous and worried.

Second, you shouldn’t leave too much studying until a day or two before the examination. Instead, concentrate on what you can do and try to think what questions are likely to be asked.

Third, take breaks and go to sleep early enough to get a good night’s rest before the exam; eat a moderate dinner, avoiding drinks like coffee.

Fourth, get to the exam room a few minutes early and stay away from fellow students who get tense. When you get test papers, read the directions carefully and make sure that you understand them. Answer the questions from the easiest one to the more difficult ones. Keep working steadily; don’t speed up.

Passage 7

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Time is tangible: one can gain time, spend time, waste time, save time or even kill time. Common questions in American English reveal this concrete quality as though time were a possession. “Do you have any time?” “Can you get some time for this?” “How much free time do you have?” The treatment of time as a possession influences the way that time is carefully divided.

Generally, Americans are taught to do one thing at a time and may be uncomfortable when an activity is interrupted. In businesses the careful scheduling of time and the separation of activities are common practices. Appointment calendars are printed with 15-, 30-, and 60- minute time slots. A 2:30 --- 3:30 interview may end in time for a brief bread before a 3:15--- 4:00 meeting. The idea that “there is a time and place for everything” extends to American social life. Visitors who “drop by” without prior notices may interrupt their host’s personal time. Thus, calling friends on the telephone before visiting them is generally preferred to visitors’ “dropping by”. To accommodate other people’s schedules, Americans make business plans and social engagements several days or weeks in advance.

Passage 10

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

One of the teacher’s rewards is that he is using his mind on valuable subjects. All over the world people are spending their lives either on doing various jobs. Yet no one would do either of these things for his own interest.

Only the money makes them to do so. But if you really understand an important and interesting subject, like the structure of the human body or the story of the two World Wars, it is genuine happiness to explain them to others, to read every new book on them, and to learn as you teach.

Another reward of teacher is the happiness of educating students. When the pupils come to you, their minds are only half-formed, full of black spaces and vague notions and oversimplification. You do not merely insert a lot of facts, if you teach them properly. You take the living mind, and mould it. It resists sometimes. It may lie passive and apparently refuse to accept anything you print on it. Sometimes it takes the mould too easily, and then seems to melt again and become featureless. But often it comes into firmer shape as you work, and gives you the incomparable happiness of helping to create a human being. To teach a boy the difference between truth and lie in print, to start him thinking about the meaning of poetry or patriotism, to hear him hammering back at you with the facts you have helped him to find, gives the sort of satisfaction that an artist has when he makes a picture out of black canvas and chemical colorings, or a doctor when he hears a sick pulse pick up and carry the energies of new life under his hands.

46. What makes people do various jobs is ___B_____.

A. the job itself

B. the money

C. the significance

D. the fact that it can keep the mind clever

47.According to the author, it is a genuine happiness ___D________.

C. to spend one’s life on operating new machine

D. to use one’s mind on valuable subjects

48.Teaching a pupil properly ______A___________.

A. means taking and moulding the living mind

B. is just to insert a lot of facts in the mind

C. is just like injecting 500 CC. of blood

D. should be the same as giving a year’s vitamins

49.Which of the following is NOT implied in the passage? B

A. The teacher is an “engineer” who moulds the mind as he works.

B. Pupils are always ready to accept what you teach them.

C. A teacher helps to create a human being.

D. Teaching is not a kind of easy work.

50.The author refers to an artist and a doctor ________B________.

C. because both the artist and the doctor were once students

D.in order to show the fact that students can become good doctors and artists

Passage 11

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

In general, employers are looking for two things in job applicants: the proof that whether a candidate can handle a specific job and the evidence that the person will fit in with the organization. Too often, employers are most concerned with the candidate’s experience, but communication skills, enthusiasm and motivation are closely behind.

Every position requires specific qualifications. When you are invited to interview for a position, the interviewer, may already have a fairly good idea of whether you have the right qualifications. But during the interview, you’ll be asked to describe your education and previous jobs in more details so the interviewer can determine how well your skills match the requirements.

Another consideration is whether a candidate has the right personality features for the job. Each job requires a different mix of personality features. The task of the interviewer is to find out whether a candidate will be able to do the job comfortably. In addition to determining whether the applicant has the right professional qualifications and personality for a particular job, the interviewer must decide whether the person will be able to communicate with the other people in the organization.

Every interviewer approaches this issue of “fit” a little differently. Physical appearance is

often a consideration, because clothing reveals something about a candidate’s personality and awareness of industry standards. Apart from noticing a candidate’s clothes, interviewers also size up such physical factors as eye contact, handshake, facial expressions, and tone of voice.

An interviewer might also consider age in deciding whether an applicant will fit in with the organization (although job discrimination against the middle-aged is prohibited by law). A candidate’s personal background—interests, hobbies, awareness of world events, and the like—is

also regarded as an indicator of how well the person will fit in with the organization. You can expand your potential along these lines by reading widely, making an effort to meet new people and participating in discussion groups, seminars and workshops.

51. Employers usually attach most importance to applicants’ __B______.

A. age

B. experience

C. appearance

D. motivation

52. Which is NOT true according to the passage? D

A. During the interview, often candidates are expected to describe their schooling background and

previous jobs.

B. Employers are concerned with the communication skills, enthusiasm and motivation as well as

experience.

C. Each job requires a different mix of personality features.

D. Age is not considered by employers in deciding whether an applicant will fit in with the organization.

53. Why personal appearance is important in an interview? B

A. Because every company needs neatly-dressed employees to expand their business.

B. Because clothing tells something about a candidate’s personality and awareness of industry standards.

C. Because companies refuse to pay for new clothes.

D. Because employers are always fashion-conscious.

54. According to the passage, interviewers might take into account the following factors in an interview. D

A. Experience

B. Qualifications

C. Personality

D. All of the above

55. We learn from this passage the following except ____C___.

A. Job discrimination against the middle-aged is illegal.

B. Personal appearance plays an important role in an interview.

C. Communication skills are more important than personality.

D. Professional qualifications are considered vital in getting a job.

Passage 15

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

Communication through body language has been going on for thousands of years, but has been studied scientifically during the last 30 years. Scientists have found out that more human communication takes place by the use of gestures, postures, positions and distances than most of us realize. For instance, body language can help you tell when someone is lying. The following are common gestures that put you on your guard although they shouldn’t be regarded as reliable evidence that someone is lying.

1.The Eye Rub

This gesture means that a person is trying to hide the lie or doubt that a person sees, or to avoid looking at the face of someone to whom he is telling a lie. Men usually rub their eyes and if the lie is a big one they will often look away towards the floor. Women, on the other hand, often use a small, gentle rubbing motion just below the eye.

2.The Neck Scratch

This gesture indicates an interesting point, rarely is the number of scratches more or less than five. This gesture is probably a sign of doubt or uncertainty.

3.The Mouth Guard

Sometimes this gesture may be only a few fingers over the mouth. Some people try to disguise this gesture by pretending to cough. If a person uses this gesture while speaking to you, it may indicate he is telling a lie. However, if he covers his mouth while you’re speaking, it may indicate that he feels you’re lying

4.The Nose Touch

This gesture may consist of several light rubs below the nose, or it may be one quick, almost hardly noticeable touch. Like the mouth guard, it can be used both by the speaker to disguise his own deceit and by the listener who doubts the speaker’s word.

71. We know that people are probably lying if ___B___.

B. indicate one’s serious ill

C. show one’s deceit, doubt or lie

D. disguise one’s anger

74.If a person uses “Mouth Guard” gesture while speaking to you, it may probably indicate that ___A_____

A. he is telling a lie

B. he is very tired

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage

Are you looking for a good relationship with someone special? What type of person is the best for you? Is it the person with the highest IQ? Is it the most beautiful or the most handsome people? Is it the most energetic person or the most ambitious? Is your ideal partner the most traditional or the most modern person? Is he or she the person most like you, or most unlike you?

The answer, psychologists say, is none of the above. Why? Because they are all extremes. In a number of research studies, psychologists asked couples these questions. The answers were clear. Most people are happy with moderation---- with partner who are not so special! The research showed several other important things. In a love relationship, two things can cause your trouble. Firstly, trouble happens when both people get angry quickly. That is not surprising. Secondly, trouble happens when people don’t expect to change themselves in a relationship. Do you stay calm when you disagree with someone? Are you ready to change yourself? Maybe you are ready for a serious relationship. 91. The person mentioned in the first paragraph are _C_____.a. not the most b. ordinary people c. extremes d. both b and c 92. Psychologists think that one’s ideal partner is_____D______.a. the most traditional b. the most ambitious c. a person with the highest IQ d. none of the above 93. The word “couples” in the second paragraph means ___D_____.a. husbands and wives b. fiancés and fiancees c. colleagues d. both a and b 94. Most people are more comfortable with partners who are____ than with those who are__C____.a. the worst; the best b. the best; the worst c. not very unusual; extremes d. very unusual; not the best 95. From the passage you can conclude that if you want a good relationship with anyone else you should______C_______.a. be most like him b. like him most c. keep calm when you disagree with him d. keep to your viewpoint when you disagree with him Passage 20

In the first round ,their covercition was as follows: D: I'd like to get the ball rolling by talking about prices. R: Shoot.,I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have. D: Y our products are very good. But I'm a little worried about the prices you're asking. R: Y ou think we about be asking for more?(laughs) D: (chuckles) That's not exactly what I had in mind. I know your research costs are high, but what I'd like is a 25% discount. R: That seems to be a little high, Mr. Smith. I don't know how we can make a profit with those numbers. D: Please, Robert, call me Dan. (pause) Well, if we promise future business――volume sales――that will slash your costs for making the Exec-U-ciser, right? R: Y es, but it's hard to see how you can place such large orders. How could you turn over so many? (pause) We'd need a guarantee of future business, not just a promise. D: We said we wanted 1000 pieces over a six-month period. What if we place orders for twelve months, with a guarantee? R: If you can guarantee that on paper, I think we can discuss this further. But even with volume sales, our coats for the Exec-U-Ciser won't go down much. D: Just what are you proposing? R: We could take a cut on the price. But 25% would slash our profit margin .We suggest a compromise――10%. D: That's a big change from 25! 10 is beyond my negotiating limit. (pause) Any other ideas? R: I don't think I can change it right now. Why don't we talk again tomorrow? D: Sure. I must talk to my office anyway. I hope we can find some common ground on this. NEXT DAY D: Robert, I've been instructed to reject the numbers you proposed; but we can try to come up with some thing else.

I see what you mean. That's a good idea. 或者说:I agree with you. 如果是有条件地接受,可以用on the condition that这个句型,例如:We accept your proposal, on the condition that you order 20,000 units. I don't think that's a good idea. Frankly, we can't agree with your proposal. We're not prepared to accept your proposal at this time. To be quite honest, we don't believe this product will sell very well in China. No, I''m afraid you misunderstood me. What I was trying to say was…… Oh, I'm sorry, I misunderstood you. Then I go along with you. This one is very good for 10 US dollars.(这东西绝对值10美元。)或These are slightly higher in price, but their superior quality makes them more valuable than the less expensive ones.(这些货价稍微高了一点,但其优异的品质,使它们比那些便宜的货,更有价值。)

B-H: Besides, our products enjoy a good reputation in the world. A-Candy:I know, but I still wish you to make a concession in the price .we can not accept your offer unless the price is reduced by 5% off?
