Where we live,on the eastern shore of Maryland, the gentle waters

run in and out like fingers slimming at the tips.

The Canada geese know this place,as do the white swans and the

ducks. In autumn, they come home for the winter.Once or twice

each year, snow and frozen rain move into the area. When this

happens,if the river is at its narrowest, there is a freeze which

hardens the water to ice.

One morning,a friend of mine set the breakfast table beside the huge window, which overlooked the Tred Avon River.Suddenly she leaned forward and cried out,“There is a goose out there.”We saw the figure of a large Canada goose, very still, its wings folded tight to its sides, its feet frozen into the ice.

Then from the dark skies, she saw a line of swans. They floated from the top of the sky downward and at last landed on the ice.My friend was on her feet now, with one hand against her mouth, unbelieving. As the swans surrounded the frozen goose, she feared that life it still had might be pecked(啄) out by those great swan bills.

Instead, those bills began to work on the ice.The long necks were lifted and curved down, again and again. It went on for a long time.At last, the goose’s head was lifted. Its body was pulled. Then the goose was free and stood on the ice.And the swans stood in the air watching. Then,as if it had cried,“I cannot fly.”Four of the swans came down around it.Their powerful beaks chipped off the ice held in the feathers.Slowly, the goose spread its wings as far as they would go,and moved slowly into the sky.

This is a true story.I just think of it in the bad moment, and from it comes only one hopeful question:If so for birds, why not for man?

D.They stayed with it and protected it.

40.What would probably happen to the author’s friend in the end?

Even a small reduction in salt in the diet can be a big help to the heart. A new study used a computer model to predict how just t hree grams less a day would af fect heart disease in the United States.

The result: thirteen percent fewer heart attacks. Eight percent fewer strokes. Four percent fewer deaths. Eleven percent fewer new cases of heart disease. And two hundred forty billion dollars in health care savings.

Researchers found it could prevent one hundred thousand heart attacks and ninety-two thousand deaths every year.

The study is in the New England Journal of Medicine. Kirsten, at the University of California, was the lead author. She says people would not even notice a difference in taste with three grams, or one-half teaspoon, less salt per day. The team also included researchers at Stanford and Columbia University.

Each gram of salt contains four hundred milligrams of sodium, which is how foods may list their salt content.

The government says the average American man eats ten grams of salt a day. The American Heart Association advises no more than three grams for healthy people. It says salt in the American diet has increased fifty percent since the nineteen seventies, while blood pressures have also risen. Less salt can mean a lower blood pressure.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is leading an effort called the National Salt Reduction Initiative. The idea is to put pressure on food companies and restaurants.

Mayor Bloomberg has already succeeded in other areas, like requiring fast food places in the city to list calorie information. Now a study by the Seattle Children's Research Institute shows how that idea can influence what parents order for their children.

Ninety-nine parents of three to six year olds took part. Half had McDonald's menus clearly showing how many calories were in each food. The other half got menus without the calorie information.

Want your kids to sleep better at night? Turn off the TV. That's the conclusion of a new study from Finland showing that merely having a television on in the house, even if the kids aren't actively watching it,can be enough to disturb their sleep patterns significantly.

Childcare specialists are very specific about the amount of hours children of a given age should spend in front of the television and the kinds of shows they should be watching. But few people have looked closely at what happens when a TV is simply on in the background - either being watched by an adult or,just as commonly,by no one at all.

In a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research,Finnish investigators tried to get at that question, surveying 321 parents of 5-and 6-year-old children to determine the families' viewing patterns and the effect this had on the kids' sleep habits.

All of the families in the study watched a pretty fair amount of TV,with at least one television in the house switched on for an average of 4.2 hrs. per day. On average a child actively watched TV for 1. 4 of those houre and was passively exposed to TV for at least another 1. 4 hrs. In 21 % of the homes, the kids had a TV of their own in the bedroom.

All that exposure,it turns out. was doing the kids' sleep patterns no favors. In general, hours of passive or active viewing was. the more problems young children had falling asleep. staying asleep, waking up in the morning and avoiding fatigue during the day.

But not all TV viewing was equal. Watching TV alone or at bedtime had greater negative impact on sleep. Unusually high passive exposure - 2. 1 hrs. per day or more - was particularly associated with sleep disturbances. especially when they were adult shows to which the kids were exposed. 1.What's the main purpose of the author to w rite this passage? Is there someone you hate?Well, maybe you don’t really hate them. But you do get really angry every time you think of them.If you don’t overcome this anger,it can turn into bitterness (积怨).Bitterness can result when we can’t forgive someone who has hurt us or made us angry.Someone might say or do something that hurts us.But instead of working through the anger,we keep it deep inside. Before long,a bitter feeling begins to grow.Bitterness shows when we constantly criticize the one who hurts us.We may think we’re hurting that person, but we’re really only hurting ourselves.

Bitterness is a harmful emotion that affects the whole body.It can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure.Bitterness can keep us from concentrating on important things. Finally, holding onto bitterness can hurt our relationships with friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an angry, negative person for very long.

Author Chuck Swindoll once said,“Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we respond to it.”That means when someone hurts you, your response is more important than what happened. You can choose to let go of hurt,or you can hold onto it,which results in bitterness.

If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to handle it.

Instead of denying(否定) your anger, admit it to yourself. Then see your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.

You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad.But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person.Bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life.

The best thing you can do is forgive and forget. You probably can’t completely put the act out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person.Let it go and move on.You’ll enjoy better health and peace of mind.

16.What will happen if we don’t release anger?

A.We won’t put blame on others for no reason.

B.A bitter feeling will develop in our mind.

C.We will not be particular about what others do.

D.We will always be criticized and hurt.

17.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?

A.The physical effects of bitterness.

B.The relationships hurt by bitterness.

C.The negative effects of bitterness.

D.A waste of time to hate others.

18.The author advises us to do the following EXCEPT________.

A.hold onto bitterness inside us

B.forgive the one who hurts us

C.deal with your anger properly

D.forget others’rude behavior

19.By forgiving others,we are able to________.

A.prevent bad things from happening

B.be friends with the person who hurts us

C.enjoy good health and a peaceful mind

D.forget the bitter experience completely

20.What is the text mainly about?

A.The advantages of bitterness.

B.The ways to dispel bitterness.

C.The causes and effects of bitterness.

D.Both B and C.

Last year college students in America spent an estimated $700 on

textbooks on average. The National Association of College Stores

reported more than five billion dollars in sales of textbooks and course

materials.

The association spokesman Charles Schmidt says electronic textbooks

now just make up 2%~3% of sales. But he says that is expected to

reach 10%~15% by 2012.

Online versions(版本) are now available for many of the most popular college textbooks. An e-textbook can cost half the price of a new print textbook. But students usually lose access to them after the end of the term. And the books cannot be placed on more than one device(设备),so they are not easy to share.

So what do students think of e-textbooks?Administrators at Northwest Missouri State University wanted to find it out.Earlier this year they tested them with 500 students in 20 classes.

The university is unusual. It provides laptop computers for all 7,000 of its full-time students. It does not require students to buy their textbooks either. They rent them to save money. The school aims to save even more by moving to e-textbooks.

The students in the survey reported that downloading the books from the Internet was easy. They liked the idea of carrying lighter backpacks. And 56% said they were better able to find information.

But most found that using e-textbooks did not change their study habits. And 60% felt they read

more when they were reading on paper. In all, almost half the students said they still liked physical textbooks better.

But the survey found that cost could be a big influence.55% said they would choose e-textbooks if using them meant their textbook rental fee would not increase.

Roger V on Holzen heads the Center for Information Technology in Education at Northwest Missouri State University. He tells us that administrators are disappointed with the e-textbooks now available because the majority are not interactive(交互式的).

He thinks growth will come when more digital books include video, activities, games and other ways to interact with the information. The technology is improving. But for now, most of the books are just words on a screen.

21.E-textbooks are not better than paper books in that________.

A.they cost more money

B.they’re difficult to carry

C.they’re not convenient to share

D.they can’t be downloaded from the Internet

22.How many surveyed students think paper books make better reading?

A.60%. B.56%. C.55%. D.50%. 23.Northwest Missouri State University equips its students with computers to________. A.help students to save money

B.make profits by renting e-textbooks

C.check whether students like using computers

A company planning to open the first hotel in space says it is on target to accept its first paying guests in 2012 despite critics questioning the investment and the length of time for the multibillion -dollar project.

The Barcelona-based architects of the Galactic Suite Space Resort say it will cost $4.4 million for a three-night stay at the hotel. This price also includes an eight-week training course on an island.During their stay, guests would see the sunrise 15 times a day and travel around the world every 80 minutes.

Galactic Suite Ltd’s CEO Xavier Claramunt says the project will put his company in a leading position of a new industry with a huge future ahead of it,and forecasts space travel will become common in the future.“It’s very normal to think that your children, possibly within 15 years, could spend a weekend in space,”he told Reuters Television.

A promising space tourism industry is beginning to take shape with construction in progress in New Mexico of Spaceport America, the world’s first facility built specifically for passengers.British industrialist Richard Branson’s space tours firm,Virgin Galactic, will use the facility to send tourists to space at a cost of $200,000 a ride.

Galactic Suite Ltd,set up in 2007,hopes to start its project with a single pod(分离舱) in orbit 280 miles above the Earth.“It will take a day and a half to reach the pod,and the passengers will join it for three days,”Claramunt said.More than 200 people have expressed an interest in traveling to the space hotel and at least 43 people having already reserved it.

The numbers are similar for Virgin Galactic with 300 people having already paid or signed up for the trip, but unlike Branson,Galactic Suite says they will use Russian rockets to transport their guests into space from a spaceport to be built on an island in the Caribbean. But critics have questioned the project, saying the length of time that will be used is unreasonable and also where the money is coming from to support the project.

The greatest artistic creative geniuses I’ve ever seen, have been those who can turn garbage into art.Not just gluing together junk, but really making waste into something unique, cool, and well, something you’d put into your home for instance. There’s something to be said about recycling of those items we commonly throw away.

The ability to take trash and garbage and turn them into art,or something intriguing that is fascinating to look at is a skill all of its own.I have often said that the true geniuses of our time, that is to say the creative genius artists of our era are those who can do this, create art that can command a high price tag from junk.Over the years while traveling through the United States I had stopped into museums in many parts of the country.

Some of the best art I’ve ever seen in my life has come from garbage, trash,or junk that has been reworked and recycled into something spectacular.Best of all the artists don’t spend much on material costs, therefore it is mostly profitable. In fact they are using their minds to do a lot with very little.Just think if we all used our minds to do this, how little we might actually throw away, and how more efficiently we could run our factories, production, and even households.

After all, anything that is not used is waste, and it is thrown away.It ends up in a landfill,or a dump somewhere, and eventually it decays in the soil, causing perhaps ground water pollution. However,if we can rework these items for a couple of more rounds, and waste less, then we are providing efficiency for our civilization, and that’s a good thing.Any artist who can do this is not only one caring the environment, but he is also one with humanity, and using his brain power and creative genius to make us all better.

A.He can’t afford good art from garbage.

B.Art made from garbage doesn’t cost much in material.

C.He collects a lot of art form garbage.

D.He thinks it’s easy to make art from garbage.

9.We learn from the last paragraph that ________.

A.real artists are those with humanity

B.creating art from garbage can also help the environment

C.there is no good way to deal with waste today

D.a great amount of waste has been reused by artists

10.What’s the author’s attitude towards the artists who turn garbage into art? A.Neutral. B.Pitiful. C.Doubtful. D.Supportive.

His mother had kept on hinting that there would be a big surprise for him during the vacation. Kevin took out his scrapbook (剪贴簿). The exams had just finished, and summer vacation had just started. Now he was free as a bird — free to draw, paint, play basketball, and watch television…anything he wanted to do. Suddenly, the doorbell rang, startling (使惊吓) him. It was his pain of a cousin, Max. “Hi!” screamed Max as he jumped on Kevin’s bed. “I have come to stay here for the holidays.” Kevin had never expected his mother’s surprise to be this bad. If this was the start of his vacation, then the next few weeks were going to be the worst experience of his life. The next few days were horrible for Kevin. After breakfast, Kevin decided to make a painting. Luckily, Max was not around. Kevin spread out all his art supplies and started painting some beautiful scenery. When he was doing the finishing touches, Max entered the room with a Pepsi bottle. He slipped on some water, spilling Pepsi all over the painting and totally ruining it. The next day was even worse. Everything was peaceful until the evening. It all started when Max put the dirty clothes in the washing machine. After some time, Kevin heard some strange sounds from the washing machine. He went to check and found that Max had put his best pair of shoes into the machine, along with the clothes. One day, Kevin was looking through the newspaper when some interesting news caught his attention. He read it aloud: “The world famous philatelist (集邮家) Dick Brown’s stamps were stolen last week from his house. Several other stamp robberies also have taken place, and police suspect that all the robberies are linked.” This piece of news concluded by warning all stamp collectors to keep their stamps safe.

关系代词有:who, whom, whose, that, which等。 关系副词有:when, where, why等。 Is he the man who/that wants to see you? 他就是你想见的人吗?(who/that在从句中作主语) He is the man whom/ that I saw yesterday. They rushed over to help the man whose car had broken down. Please pass me the book whose (of which)cover is green. A prosperity which / that had never been seen before appears in the countryside. (which / that在句中作宾语) The package (which / that)you are carrying is about to come unwrapped. There are occasions when (on which)one must yield. Beijing is the place where(in which)I was born. Is this the reason why (for which)he refused our offer? His father died the year (that / when / in which)he was born. He is unlikely to find the place (that / where / in which)he lived forty years ago. This is the mountain village where I stayed last year. I'll never forget the days when I worked together with you. 判断改错: (错)This is the mountain village where I visited last year. (错)I will never forget the days when I spent in the countryside. (对)This is the mountain village (which)I visited last year. (对)I'll never forget the days (which)I spent in the countryside.
