Jessica: OK, my mother and father. Let's see. My mom is

three years older than my dad, and they are like night and day. My mom is 5 foot 4, on a good day, 5 foot 2, I think in real life, and she is very sweet and very nice, and very caring, and very cute, everybody tells her how young she looks, and how she resembles my sister, perhaps. My father is very much completely opposite that. He is a very big man, very loud, very funny, very boisterous. He makes friends no matter where he goes. For example, sometimes he goes to Florida and makes all sorts of good friends. He'll just go off. He's kind of a magnet to people, and so my parents are completely opposite, and

they complement each other very well. My dad has a very

good sense of humor. My mom is very gentle. Very nice.

Todd: When is the last time you talked to you parents?

Jessica: I talked to them probably about two weeks ago. Yeah, everything is going well.

Todd: Are you going to see them soon?

Jessica: I am going to go home after the holidays and we're going to have a Christmas kind of in January or February. Yeah, depending on when my brother can come in.

Todd: OK. And who are you more like, your mother or your father?

Jessica: I think I have traits of both, actually. I look more like my mother, except that I am about a foot taller. Yeah, I resemble my mom more. I think I have both of the characteristics of my mom and dad.

Todd: OK. Great. Thanks.

Todd: OK, Ann, you spent quite a bit of time in Australia recently so why don't you talk about that?

Ann: I really liked living in Australia. I was an international student and I studied education at the University of Sydney. And living in Sydney was fantastic, because I could go to the beach anytime I wanted and there was a great nightlife in Sydney. There are lots of great clubs. And people were very,

very friendly and easy-going and I met a lot of international people in living Sydney.

Todd: Mm-mm. How long were you there?

Ann: I was there for almost a year.

Todd: Oh, OK.

Ann: And I travelled a little bit in Australia. I went up the east coast. Up to Frasier Island, which is a world heritage site. And I saw dingoes running along the beach and sharks in the water. We climbed cliffs and went through a rainforest and went camping and then we went up to the Whitsundays, which is a bit further north. And the further north you go in Australia, the hotter it gets. So we were able to go swimming in the ocean and I went diving for the first time but it was a little bit risky cause I didn't have a diving license, so I went on an introductory dive and I saw a giant clam that had a really

purple spongy inside that I was able to touch and then the clam closed up really quickly.

Todd: So, did you, did you lose your finger?

Ann: Almost.

Todd: Almost. Ah, you're lucky. Um, it's funny, you go in the water and you worry about sharks, but not clams.

Ann: Exactly.

是的。

Todd: Will you be going back to Australia soon?

Ann: I'd like to go and live there for at least another year. Probably I'll go back to Sydney or maybe I'll go down to Melbourne because it's a really interesting cultural city. They have lot of museums and parks.

Todd: OK. You gotta choose real quick, only one city, Montreal or Sydney, which do you choose?

Ann: Sydney, without a doubt.

Todd: OK. All right. Thanks a lot.

Ann: You're welcome.

Todd: Hello, Mini.

Mini: Hello.

Todd: Now, Mini, you are from Sri Lanka.

Mini: Yes.

Todd: If somebody is going to your country, can you recommend three things they should do or three things they should see?

Mini: OK, the first thing is you can go and see the ancient things that all the Kings and Queens built, like castles. We

have a castle called... it's called the Rock Castle. It's called Sigirya, so it's very beautiful.

Todd: This is the Rock Castle.

Mini: Yeah, it's... the castle is on the rock itself, so you can

see the ruins there. It's really beautiful, with pictures, paintings, arts and stuff.

Todd: Oh, really. That's really cool, so this rock castle, how old is it?

Mini: I'm not sure, but maybe around two thousand. I'm not sure. Sorry.

Todd: What else should people you see?

Mini: The second thing should be beaches. We have beautiful beaches all over the place, blue, clean. You can swim. You

can surf. It's very beautiful. That's the second thing.

Todd: Surfing is popular in Sri Lanka?

Mini: M-hm. I mean, not popular amongst Sri Lankans but

most of the... many tourists come, especially the Germans, they come to my country and surf because the hotels near the beaches are very cheap and it's very beautiful hotels and very cheap. Food is cheap. It's nice.

Todd: OK. So, we've got the Rock Castle, surfing on the beach. Anything else?

Mini: And then a third thing should be the Tooth Temple. It's

like the tooth of a Buddha, so we got it from I guess India,

King Ashoka, so it's one of the things that you can see there.

It's a really beautiful temple.

Todd: OK, I'm sorry. Can you say the name of that again?

Mini: Temple of Tooth Relic.

Todd: The Temple of Tooth Relic.

Mini: Yeah.

Todd: OK.

Mini: It's in Kandy. A place called Kandy.

Todd: Kandy. OK. Well, thanks for the tips Mini.

Mini: Thank you, you're welcome.

Joel: So, Michele, how long have you been living in Japan?

Michele: Well, in total it's been almost four years now.

Joel: Four years. OK. That's about the same for me too.

Michele: Oh, yeah.

Joel: Do you feel like your totally used to it? Are you acculturated?

Michele: I think so. At times there are still some things that are a little bit difficult but for the most part, I don't have a culture shock anymore.

Joel: For example?

Michele: Something that I still struggle with?

Joel: Yes.

Michele: Well, there's still the language barrier because I'm still not fluent in Japanese so, like today I went to the bank and I was trying to do something that was a little out of the ordinary I guess I just had some trouble and I couldn't get it done.

Joel: And you said you had gone back to the United States...

Michele: Canada.

Joel: I'm sorry. You had gone back to Canada and did you have kind of reverse culture shock when you went back?

Michele: Yes, I did actually. I... at that time, I had lived in Japan for about three years and I returned to Canada and I was so used to living in Japan and I guess I had to change my

thinking and behaviors a little bit while I was in Japan so when I went back to Canada I felt like, "OK, now I have to change back."

Joel: The first thing I noticed when I had gone back to the United States was in the grocery store, the supermarket, when I was buying my food the cashier would talk to me and ask me questions.

Michele: Right.

Joel: And when I lived in Asia, the cashiers, they never talk to you, and it just threw me off. It threw me off guard. I was very surprised at how much just people you don't know will approach you and talk to you and ask you questions.

Michele: Right.

Joel: Is it the same in Canada?

Michele: Yeah. Yeah. I think so. And I also noticed when I went back to Canada, especially I lived near Toronto, and there's people from a lot of different countries in Toronto, I've been so used to seeing only Japanese pieces, so it was a little bit shock to see so many different pieces again whenever I back to Canada.

Joel: And also, you're planning to move back soon again?

Michele: Well, I'm going to go back Canada in the summer for my holidays but then I'll be back in Japan.

Joel: Oh, I see. What do you think you'll miss most while

you're gone?

Michele: What will I miss about Japan?

Joel: Yeah.

Michele: I think I'll miss the food the most. I really love Japanese food.

Joel: That's exactly the same for me.

Michele: Yeah.

Joel: I'll miss my yakisoba.

Michele: And good sushi. Udon. I love udon.

Joel: Hey, Michele.

Michele: Hi.

Joel: You don't look very happy. What happened?

Michele: Oh, well, I'm a little bit frustrated.

Joel: Why?

Michele: Well, I went to the bank today and I couldn't communicate well because my Japanese wasn't good enough and the bank teller didn't speak English.

Joel: What were you trying to do?

Michele: Well, I've ordered a ticket to go to Australia and I have to send the money to the travel agency and they only accept one form of payment. They want me to send a bank transfer.

Joel: OK.

Michele: So, I have a post office account and I can't do it through the post office, so I went to the bank and I started to explain that I want to send.... do a bank transfer.

Joel: Right.

Michele: And because I'm a foreigner, I think she thought I wanted to send money abroad and she was saying, "Oh, I'm sorry, you can't do that here" but I had to explain, "No, no. I just want to send it within Japan," but I don't know, because I don't have an account at that bank there was some sort of problem and she wanted me to fill out a form and I didn't really understand it.

Joel: Right, and then the form is in Japanese.

Michele: Yes, so now I have the form. I guess I'll have to go find a friend to help me with...

Joel: You never solved the problem.

Michele: No, no. I just took the form and said, "OK, I'll take it and come back."

Joel: How long were you there?

Michele: Not too long, maybe five or ten minutes. There weren't many people in the bank but I still felt like, oh I'm taking up too much time here or something.

Joel: So, you just gave up and...

Michele: Yes.

Joel: Well, I'll have to take you over to my landlord here. This Japanese woman is really nice and she'll... I'm sure she'll help you fill out the form.

Michele: Oh, really.

Joel: And take care of you. Yeah.

Michele: Oh, that's great.

1. fill out 填,填写(表格等);

例句:To apply for a job, you mustfill outa form.

B: Happy new year, On the contrary,I think the fireworks and firecrackers is as nice as the Spring festival. A:Oh no, A t New Year’s Eve, I was up all night because there is too much noise outside. I think fireworks and firecrackers should be prohibited. B:I may not agree with you. The noise of them is a symbol of lively festive atmosphere. And I set off some fireworksat New Year’s Eve. It’s so interesting. A: Ok, the noise, is a piece of cake, it is just for me. But fireworks and crackers will cause air pollution. When firework is set off, it will produce lots of sulfur dioxide which is harmful to our environment. What’s more, fireworks and crackers do lots of harm to people. To make the matter worse, children love playing carelessly with firecrackers, which more often cause conflagration. B: Yeah, some of what you have said is true and It should cause the attention of people. But as long as people pay attention to safety when setting off, I think, It'sunderstandable to set off fireworks and firecrackers during the festival and they should not be prohibited. A:There also exist potential hazards in manufacturing, shipping and storing them. B: As a traditional way to celebrate the New Year, quite a few people think firecrackers have become part of our Chinese culture. Lots of fun will be gone with the ban of firecrackers. A: True, to change a custom is not easy, and people are not ready for such drastic action, but it will pay in the long run if the setting off of firecrackers is effectively banned in the cities. B: Maybe, we can celebrate our holiday by other ways instead of setting off firework.
