Dear Mrs. Blackhurst:

I am writing to respond to the recent letter that was sent to parents and staff of Lamping Elementary School. The letter was not signed, but the indication is that the letter is from the “United Parents for Lamping.” I decided to send the response to you as PTA president so that you may disseminate my response to parents.

Mr. Robert Solomon was selected as the new principal on January 14, 2010. We did not make the announcement at that time because he and his staff had to go to Washington, DC to accept a national honor for their school. Certainly, he could not announce to his staff that he was leaving the school and then go off on a weeklong trip. I admire his decision to be sensitive to his students, staff and community in this process.

As you may know, we had two principal vacancies in Area 3, Lamping Elementary School and Ries Elementary School. We are required by contract to consider moving principals who have a discrepancy between their salary range and their school range. We do not force these principals to move to a new school. In the process of filling the two Area 3 positions, four employees chose not to be considered for the vacant positions. The decisions had nothing to do with the vacancies, they just preferred, even with a cut in pay, to remain with their current school communities. I think this is admirable.

Mr. Solomon researched the Lamping position to determine if it could be a fit for him. He also had a conference with Michael O’Dowd to discuss operations and expectations at such a unique school. He decided, without pressure from anyone, to accept the position in consultation with his family and my staff. We believe that Mr. Solomon will be an asset to the school, and he will continue the traditions that make Lamping such a success.

I wish to address two other issues in the letter. Mr. O’Dowd was not “allowed” to keep his salary when moving to Wallin Elementary School. All salary procedures and issues are addressed in policy and regulation. Secondly, even though Mr. O’Dowd is an exemplary principal, he cannot dictate school calendars. The calendar for Wallin Elementary School will be determined by policy and regulation, just as is done for all CCSD schools.

Mr. Solomon was introduced to the Lamping staff on Thursday, January 28, 2010. He will begin his new assignment on Monday, February 1, 2010.
