2 stranslucencyinthecaseofthinwallthicknesses,itsbrightcoloranditsout-standingbiocompatibility.Itisnocoincidencethatthismaterialisfrequentlyusedinthefi eldofimplantology.Inadditiontothis,itfeaturesahighdegreeofcrackresistancewhichdi stinguishesitamongoxideceramics.
Thelatterisaresultoftheso-
calledpolymorphismofzirconiumdioxide.Thecrystallatticeisstabilizedinitstetragonalhig h-temperaturephasebymeansofsuitableadditives,e.g.yttrium-oxidewhichalsoavoidsfurthertransformationintothemonoclinicphasewhichwouldother wiseautomaticallyoccurduringthecoolingprocess.Onlywhenapplyinganexternalsource ofenergy,asforexampleinthecaseofabeginningcrack(seefig.1),individualzirconiumdioxi degrainsaretransformedlocallyfromtheirtetragonaltothemonoclinicform,whichisaccom
particles).

VITAIn-CeramYZisporouslypresintered zirconium dioxide (seefig.
2)partiallystabilizedwithyttriumoxide(Y-TZP,yttriastabilizedtetragonalzirconiapoly-crystal).Fromthismaterial,whichiseasytoprocessinthiscondition,enlargedcrownandbri dgesubstructuresaremilledintheCAD/CAMsystem.
Theshrinkagewhichtakesplaceduringthesubsequentsinteringprocessinaspecialhigh-temperaturefurnace(VITAZYrcomat/VITAZYRCOMAT6000MS)isexactlycalculated.T heendresult:substructureswithahighdegreeofstrengthandmarginalaccuracywhichfeat urealltheadvantagesofthephysicalpropertiesofpartiallystabilizedzirconiumdioxide.Sub structuresmadefromVITAIn-CeramYZareveneeredwiththefine-structureceramicVITAVM9.

Dependingonthesoftware,varioustypesofsinteringsupportsarerequiredforlarge-spanbridgestructurestoensuresinteringwithoutanydeformation.However,ifthissu pportconsistsonlyofaremainingpieceoftheblock/disc,
thevolumeshouldbereducedtoguaranteeevenheatingupduringthesinteringprocess.
Inordertofacilitatehigh-glosspolishingofsinteredfullyanatomicalrestorations,itisrecommendedtosmoothenthe milledrestorationwiththedarkgreysmoothingwheel(VI-R22WG)includedintheVITAIn-CeramProcessingSettechnical(availablefrom October2012).

Note:
Thephysicalmaterialproperties,suchasflexuralstrength,fracturetough-
nessandWeibullcoefficientarenotadverselyaffectedbytheuseofthe YZCOLORI
NGLIQUIDs.
Use
Makesurethatthesurfaceoftherestorationisnottoosmoothinordernottoaffectthepenetrati
onoftheColoringLiquid.Toachieveconsistentcoloringresults,anydustorgreasemustbe
removedfromthesubstructurebefore
theuse.Thenacleaningcycleinadentalfurnaceisrequiredtoremovecoolantsorlubricantsfr
omtheporousstructure.
Cleaning firing inthe VITAVACUMAT?
Therestorationisimmersedinthecoloringliquidaccordingtotheshadetobereproduced.T
hesubstructureisplacedintheliquidinawaytoavoidbubblesandtoensurecompletecovera
gewithliquid.Therecommendedimmersiontimeis2minutes.When immersingthe
substructure, vacuumor pressure (2bars)can beusedadditionally.
SubsequentlyremoveexcessYZCOLORINGLIQUIDwithapapertissue.Makesuretoavo
idpuddlesingaps.Thenleavetodryforashortperiod.Donotsinterinwetcondition!

Colorclassification
Thebasiccolorslight/paleandmediumarematchedwiththeshadereproductionwithVITAVM9.
*The additionalcolor intense is usedfor makingthetwo basiccolors moreintensive (more chromatic). The additional color neutral isused to reduce the intensity ofthetwobasiccolors(lesschromatic).Bothcolorscanalsobeusedintheirpureform:intensetoachieveaveryhighdegreeofshadeintensity;neutral,
e.g. todecreasethelightnessofVITAIn-CeramYZ.TheshaderesultsincombinationwithVITAVM9maydiffersignificantlyfromtheshadesample.
Forindividualcharacterization,YZCOLORINGLIQUIDcanalsobeappliedinathin,homoge

Placeanteriorcrownsubstructuresintothesinteringdishwiththelabialorlingualsurfacefa cingdownward;ideally,anteriorbridgesubstructuresshouldbeplacedontheincisalsurfac eandposteriorcrownandbridgesubstructureswiththeocclusalsurfacefacingdownward. Itisrecommendedtosinterbridgesubstruc-
turesinthesinteringdish.Makesurethattheentiresurfaceofthesubstructureissupported bythefiringsupporttoavoiddeformation.Careshouldbetakento preventsinteringbeadsfrom becoming…jammed―intheconnectorareas.Thefitofthesubstr ucturecanbecheckedafterasinteringprocessandacoolingphaseofapprox.10min.
Important
VITAIn-CeramYZ canbesinteredinallhigh-temperaturefurnaces,whichcan beoperatedwiththesinteringparametersindicatedabove.Theusermustobservetheresp ectiveinstructionsofthefurnacemanufacturer. VITAdoesnotgrantawarrantyoracceptanyliabilityfordamageresultingfromsinteringVIT AIn-CeramYZinfurnacesofothermanufacturers.
Reworking and surface treatment aftersintering
Milledrestorationsshouldpreferablybeadjustedbeforesintering.However,ifreworkin gisrequired,thefollowingbasicaspectsneedtobeobserved:
?Correctionsneedtobemadewithdiamondinstrumentsforwetgrindingunderwatercool ingandatalowpressure.
?Usenewfine-graineddiamondswithredcolorcoding
(fine=27-76μm)orless(extra-fine,yellow10-36μmorultra-fine,white4-
14μm).
?Itisalsopossibletoprocessthesubstructureusingsoft,diamondrubberpolishersan dahandpiecewithslowspeedsandlowpressure.Makesuretouse only PU-
bonded (polyurethane) polishers. This material
canbeeasilyremovedandburnsoutwithoutleavinganyresidue.
Silicone-
bondedpolisherscannotbecompletelyremoved.Thismayaffectthebondingareatowards theveneeringmaterial.
?Theinstrumentmustlieflatonthesurfaceandchatteringmustbeavoided.
?Toavoidphasetransformation,surfacestobeveneeredmustnotbesandbla sted.

High-gloss polished zirconiumoxidedoesnot causelossofsubstance(= abrasion)ontheantagonistandisnotabradedbytheantagonisteither.Abrasion,however,a lwaysoccursinthenaturaldentition.Byapplyingaglazelayertothezirconiumoxide,natural abrasionisimitated.Thiswayprematurecontactsinthezirconiumoxiderestorationareavoi ded.
VITAAKZENTGlazeSprayisrecommendedforglazing.
High-glosspolishing
Carefullhigh-glosspolishingoftheocclusalsurfaceisalwaysurgentlyrequiredfortheoverallfunctionaleff ectoftherestorationsincethesurfaceroughnessofunpolished zirconiumoxidecausesincreasedloss ofsubstance(abrasion)ontheantagonist.High-glosspolishedzirconiumoxide,however,doesnotcauseanyloss ofsubstanceontheantagonistsinceitdoesnothaveabrasivepropertiesandevenresistspla que.*)
High-glosspolishingmustalsoalwaysbecarriedoutbeforecharacterizationoftheshade(staining technique).
