One study shows that Americans prefer to answer with a brief 'Yes ' , ' No ' , ' Sure ' , or the very popular ' Yeah ' rather than with a longer reply.

But brief replies do not mean Americans are impolite or unfriendly to some extent. Very often, Americans are in a hurry and may greet you with a single word ' Hi ' , indeed; this is a greeting you will hear again and again during your stay in the United States. It is used by everyone, regardless of rank and occupation.

However, those who are accustomed to longer greetings may require a little more time before they feel comfortable with American simple talk. Americans sometimes use plain talk when they are uncomfortable. If people praise them or thank them in an especially polite way, they may become uncomfortable and not know what to say in reply. They don't want to be impolite or rude, you can be sure that they liked what was said about them.

“Opinion” is a word that is used carelessly today. It is used to refe r to matters of taste, belief, and judgment. New technology links the world as never before. Our planet has become smaller. It’s now a “global village” where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone or satellite link. And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communications equipment is greatly enhanced by foreign language skills.

Deeply involved with this new technology is a breed of modern businesspeople who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success overseas often helps support domestic business efforts.

Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks. The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being “out of sight and out of mind.” He or she can be s ure that the overseas effort is central to the company’s plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superiors will have greater confidence in his or her ability to cope back in the U.S. where cross-cultural consideration and foreign language issues are becoming more and more prevalent (普遍的).

Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communications devices with business applications, even small businesses in the U.S. are able to get into international markets.

English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language. A second language isn’t generally required to get a job in b usiness, but having language skills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal.

The employee posted abroad who speaks the country’s principal language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain negations, and can have the cultural insight to know when it is better to move more slowly. The fitness movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s centered around aerobic exercise(有氧操). Millions of individuals became engaged in a variety of aerobic activities, and literally thousands of health spas developed around the country to capitalize (获利) on this emerging interest in fitness, particularly aerobic dancing for females. A number of fitness spas existed prior to this aerobic fitness movement, even a national chain with spas in most major cities. However, their focus was not on aerobics, but rather on weight-training programs designed to develop muscular mass, strength, and endurance in their primarily male enthusiasts. These fitness spas did not seem to benefit financially from the aerobic fitness movement to better health, since medical opinion suggested that weight-training programs offered few, if any, health benefits. In recent years, however, weight training has again become increasingly popular for males and for females. Many current programs focus not only on developing muscular strength and endurance but on aerobic fitness as well.

Historically, most physical-fitness tests have usually included measures of muscular strength and endurance, not for health-related reasons, but primarily because such fitness components have been related to performance in athletics. However, in recent years, evidence has shown that training programs designed primarily to improve muscular strength and endurance might also offer some health benefits as well. The American College of Sports Medicine now recommends that weight training be part of a total fitness program for healthy Americans. Increased participation in such training is one of the specific physical activity and fitness objectives of Healthy People 2000: National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives.

In recent years, English has become more and more spoken all over the world. Yet, while a number of people in other parts of the world are learning English, fewer Americans today are learning foreign . That trend has created serious shortages of foreign languages speakers in the American diplomatic services, in the armed forces, and in companies with the international trade. And, it is a trend that is causing great among an increasing number of Americans.

These people point to some facts. At the start of World War I, 36 percent of all American students knew at least one foreign language before they entered a university. Today, the number is only 15 percent. And, less than five percent of those young people complete more than two years of foreign language study. In 1915, 85 percent of American universities demanded that students at least one foreign language to gain admission, , today, only 8 percent of all universities make such a demand.

Some observers say broader measures are necessary Americans are to communicate well with the rest of the world. They say foreign language skills must be

in all parts of the system---from university entrance through top positions in the American diplomatic service .

England is not a big country: from north to south and from east to west it is only three hundred miles across. But for a small country it has a surprising of climate. People, who have never visited England, or who have visited only one part of it, often the mistake of thinking that it is a cold and wet country. Except for the summer months of June to September, this is probably true the north of England and the Midlands. In the south, however, the climate is much more pleasant. One result is that when people from a job in the north they often prefer to move down to the milder south.

Perhaps the warmest part of the country is the southwest, which consists the counties of Devon and Cornwall. The warm Gulf Stream flows the North Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Mexico and makes the coastal regions of the southwest warm. Palm trees, bamboo and many semi-tropical plants grow well in the southwest of England. Flowers and vegetables ripen as much as a month earlier than elsewhere. Farmers in the area obtain a higher price for their vegetables and flowers because they are ready earlier. In winter there may be several feet of snow in other parts of England but there will probably be no snow at all in the southwest. This may be one of the reasons why the is one of England’s most popular holiday areas.
